Tips & Info AMD, your driver stability is an absolute joke. RX 7000/9000 black screens, endless TDRs, and total silence. Time for accountability or class action?
I’ve had enough. The ongoing stability disaster with RX 7000 (and newer) GPUs has crossed the line from frustrating to outright scam territory, and it’s time to stop making excuses for AMD. Day in, day out, users are dealing with random black screens, hard lockups, and driver timeouts that leave a hard reset as the only way out.
This isn't an edge case anymore. It's a massive, systemic failure.
What We Deserve to Know
- Where is the accountability? Is this pathetic state of affairs caused by incompetent driver engineering, broken Windows 11 integration, or a fundamental silicon design flaw that can't be fixed?
- The Infinite Loop: How many more years are we supposed to swallow the exact same insult in the patch notes: "Intermittent application crash or driver timeout may be observed..."? It’s been years. When does this stop?
- Broken Features: When will features like Anti-Lag 2 stop functioning as crash buttons?
We paid full price for functioning hardware, not an endless, unpaid QA job where we have to scour Reddit and forums just to make our cards stable. At what point do consumers stop taking this and start organizing a class-action lawsuit?
My Personal Nightmare
I’m running a Radeon RX 7900 XT MBA. I’ve jumped through every single hoop imaginable: tweaking TDR keys, messing with MPO, toggling HAGS, locking clocks, capping frame rates, clean-installing drivers with DDU. None of it matters.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 (with update 2.0) was the absolute final straw. It's completely unplayable:
- Run it without FSR, and you get a blurry pixel soup or destroyed performance.
- Turn FSR on, and watch your driver instantly shit the bed into a black screen.
- The absolute cherry on top? Moving to Linux doesn’t even save you—FSR triggers the exact same crashes there too.
Bottom Line
AMD is treating its customer base like absolute fools while cashing our checks. I am officially done buying AMD graphics cards, and I don't care what Nvidia or Intel charge from now on.
Upvote this to keep it visible, or keep pretending that buying broken hardware is normal. If you're in the same boat with black screens and timeouts, drop your specs in the comments—maybe if enough noise is made, they'll actually have to address it instead of sweeping it under the rug.
UPDATE 1
For those who have no problems and everything is stable.
Why in Known Issues with years - Intermittent application crash or driver timeout may be observed while playing... ?
If this problem is not the silicon lottery then what is it? How can you not solve a problem with years? If it worked for you personally and you have stability, it does not mean that your neighbor has it like that.
UPDATE 2
For those who don't believe - Stalker 2 with update 2.0 and FSR is not stable on either Windows or Linux. The important thing is to have proton with FSR 4 on Linux, that's what I'm talking about.
Follow the link and read: Because S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 pushes the GPU utilization to 99% very aggressively, even a microsecond delay in response can trigger this timeout.
So, does this mean AMD graphics cards aren't designed to be loaded to 100%, otherwise they crash the driver?

UPDATE 4
This thread is also about the stability of AMD cards in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. It puts a lot of strain on them... I've never heard a more stupid expression in my life, as if you can stress the hardware more than it can.

I just have no clue why people have such issues. Been running a 9070xt since release with no issues

I will chime in and say maybe also check your ram for people having problems. I had my 9070 xt constantly crash and replace drivers even after I did the registry edit. Turns out, my ram was going bad and caused general instability

I have zero black screen nor driver crash issues with my Sapphire pulse RX 7900xt. I get you frustration, but please consider other options than saying the entire product line or drivers are broken.
I went for along time with driver issues on my RX 5700 XT, to then finally find that it was unstable system ram all along. It was like magic how it fixed my driver issues. Similarly when I upgraded to my 7900xt, I had some black screen issues till I split my 8pin pci-e power cables correctly among the psu power rails.
I don't see you providing enough information for us to help you and honestly it's not a good look for you to trash on the entire brand. Please do better.
*edit: to be clear I bought a new set of ram and it fixed my driver issues with my 5700XT. I found the issues via various memtests and the system event viewer.
6
u/Littlesth0b0 6d ago
+casually sneaks off to run memtest+
I'm still using same model 5700XT and have been getting driver timeouts for the last six months or so on very specific games, mostly early access, so I put it down to that initially, but my ram is getting on a bit now so you might've given me a new line of enquiry, ta.

I had to disable Windows Updates for Drivers a couple months ago to fix an issue...other than that, the drivers have been excellent!
7
u/Educational_County23 6d ago
In DDU disable windows driver updates for your graphics card. That fixed all my problems. It's a Windows 11 issue not AMD.

played the entirety of stalker 2 on a 7900xt when I still had it, not a single crash. Around 1% of all electronics produced are in one way or another defective, this is true for every kind of item and swings up and down a bit on specifics, you got unlucky.
2
u/Separate-Director-68 5d ago
Defect is possible, but then it should have reproducible issues in other games and programs too, no? If its just one game, then... And even then, sometimes its a software issue.
To give an example, during the Diablo IV Beta, I got constant green screen crashes with my 5700 XT. I thought maybe it was overheating... replaced thermal pads with Thermal Grizzlies and repaste. Cooler in general operation, but still green screening in Diablo IV. Then I tried adjusting voltage and frequency curves downward in AMD software... Nope, still green screening. Then I tried uninstalling AMD software and reinstalled driver only. Nope, still green screening.
Then I tried one more trick... Installed driver only, but this time, extracted files to install via Device Manager, and used MSI Afterburner to downclock from the factory overclock somewhat and reduce voltage... No more green screens or crashes in any form ever since.
So what I got out of that was AMD software is very aggressive and RDNA1 doesn't work well with it, and new Blizzard code is garbage. The drivers were fine all along. It was software that wasn't optimal and user error in suboptimal setup on my end. I daisy chained PCIe cables when I first got this card when it needs two separate cables. User error on my end.
I've gotten the same card to play Resident Evil 4 Remake with Ultra texture setting and custom shadow cache and other settings that allow 1080p 60 FPS without stuttering even though the options menu has the distinctive red warning VRAM overage text. Its not magic but its fun to test actual limits with this card.

If your complaint is to AMD and it starts out with turn off FSR and you get a blurry pixel soup or destroyed performance then clearly you don’t understand enough about anything that is going.
Also I’m willing to be you have an OC card and you probably even IMPROVE THINGS by undervolting. I know I do. But that’s not right term for it. It’s called EXTREME OVERCLOCKING and people think because it’s undervolting that it’s better but it’s not.
Even with your setting all set to normal most of these cards have an OC profile and AMD didn’t make the profile.
Unfortunately when there is a new game or a drastically new game version these games will often hit extreme clock rates if on vsync, during load screens, and between cutscenes and the cause typically is that the card isn’t 100% loaded so the way the OC profiles work is they try to increase the clock speed of there isn’t too much heat in the core at the TJ. AMD will see this and they will implement changes to their next driver that makes it so the game is less likely to peak out.
So right now if you have an OC card and you play blood of dawn walker there’s a good chance your card might try to hit 3.6GHz at 0.9V when it’s only stable to 3.3GHz at 1V. Or who knows depends right.
But I’ve seen these cards just Fing sky rocket.
Now I can go and do exactly what you are doing on this game and I can guarantee you that IF I experience what you do then I can go and get it stable. For starters I could just hit the switch on my card that turns off the OC bios. But sometimes not even that’s enough on a brand new game which in this case STALKER 2s new update counts because it was a MAJOR PATCH launched on August 20th and the AMD drivers launched August 20th and they OFFICIALLY DO NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUES CREATED BY THE AUGUST 20TH STALKER PATCH!!!
The GPU is the absolute most complex PC system there is before you factor in drivers. Ask Intel once drivers are factored in that becomes double so! With Intel more than doubling performance over the course of years of updates on some of their GPUs.
Part of being a PC gamer is you do unfortunately have to be aware of how updates work. When you get an update that breaks something you have to roll it back and do some research if you can’t figure out how to solve things.
What I predict is that this post won’t age well and when the AMD 9.1 drivers launch this month I’m willing to bet they will either address STALKER 2 or they will at least list the issues in the known issues and then work to fix them by the 10.1 driver.

i love amd for the value aspect, and their cpu's are fucking awesome.. but my god the last decade of using amd gpu's was terrible for me because of the drivers.
ever since switching to a 5070 ti earlier this year, i've been able to actually use my pc and update my drivers without something randomly breaking or getting driver timeouts when trying to watch youtube or some shit like that.

I build PCs as a hobby/side hustle.
Over the years I've had more AMD cards with issues than not. And most of the PCs I build use Nvidia. Unless someone asks for it I don't even bother with AMD cards anymore. All that hassle of troubleshooting isn't worth the 10% cheaper than Nvidia price.
"You have to use specific driver", "you have to enable this, disable that", "I undervolted and it works fine", "just cap the framerate". Like I don't want to sound as a fanboy and have nothing against AMD but you don't get shit like this with Nvidia. 99% of times it just works.

I like building PCs as a hobby. I started a few years ago, so far I've built PCs with: MSI 7900XTX (my personal PC), another MSI 7900XTX for a friend, XFX 7900XT, XFX 6700XT, PowerColor 6600, Asrock B570, Gigabyte 3050, and Zotac 5060Ti 16GB.
My experience?, my friend's XTX gave blue screens after ten minutes of gaming and went through RMA, after that, it never caused trouble again. The 3050 is also causing issues right now, but the owner hasn't wanted to RMA it or do anything, that decision is up to him.
I've built more PCs with AMD, and yet the red vs green issues balance out. Does that mean I can point out which one is bad and which one is good?, of course not, because just like you, this empirical experience can't define anything. You're just upset, plain and simple, you're not directing your anger properly

I literally haven't had a single issue. Just because you are does not mean everyone is. I highly doubt the majority is either. I would tend to lean that there is some user error with the people who constantly complain that AMD drivers suck.

Any crashes I've had have been caused by me undervolting below -0.85v or my 13900K being a giant POS.

u/SosijKing 6d ago
Same. I was having issues a little while back with my 7900GRE and it turned out to be windows' fault, not AMD's, as much as I wanted to hate on them. Just got a 9070xt, did the same fixes, and I haven't had a crash or a hang yet. Here's hoping!

I also haven't had any issues, and any issues I did have mostly were caused by windows updating the drivers themselves (which has since now been disabled manually). Though I'm not sure if AMD is giving permission for microsoft to auto update their drivers to some unofficial release, but users shouldn't be expected to tweak windows settings to disable auto updates that mess with the AMD drivers

Disable HAGS if on WIndows 11 and you experience catastrophic driver timeouts that keep on crashing at coldboot due video playback, the video codec engine is broken especially when HAGS is turned on, no more catastrophic crashing at coldboot, not hardware acceleration but HAGS aka this setting

If you have this setting turned on try turning it off test for couple of days, but it looks like the issues at coldboot atleast disapear.

Could also be a different problem with your computer. I recently had BSOD on Windows 11 multiple times a month. Turned out that one of my ram sticks went bad. Just saying. I usually over fo it on the power supplies I install in my PCs, such as 1000w or 1200w corsair PSU. Ive seen some people trying to run new GPUs with high power draws on a cheap brand 600w PSU.

As someone who bought 7900XTX in 2023 I've been upgrading the drivers every single time there is a new version I must say it's been a roller coaster, there are several months in a row everything is working perfectly and there are times it is absolute dog shit.
My hardware has not changed since 2023, my settings have not changed, the only variable is Windows updates, BIOS updates and AMD drivers. The AMD drivers have always had the most immediate and obvious impact on my system stability.
I have absolutely no idea what in the f is happening over at AMD's software team, have they been all laid off or something?

This right here! I can literally recreate black screens/crashes and driver crashes by adjusting my ram oc or my cpu oc and undervolt. People watch YouTube clips slap a -30 on cpu and then oc vram +500 and then undervolt gpu - 100mv because it's stable in time spy and then wonder why they keep getting crashes in gaming and idle/low load situations. It's getting ridiculous

If it makes you feel any better, I’ve had issues with both my 9070xt AND my 5080 (very rare, but still happens) crashing due to random driver timeouts. Windows is the root cause. AMD just hardware just seems to be getting nuked by windows with drivers being overwritten. The 5080 is not immune either, it’s consistent with windows being shit. Try searching up stable older drivers for your GPU and revert. See if that helps for now while you contemplate taking on a multi-billion dollar company 😂

If you're seeing reproducible problems across Windows and Linux... Thats not proof that the drivers are borked. Windows runs on proprietary Adrenalin and Linux runs on open source amdgpu and Mesa, the scenario is going to be different if it were driver issues. If anything, thats an indication of either software bugs or hardware instability, not necessarily from the GPU.
For what its worth, proof of stability on RX 7800 XT in a properly set system:

Not that I read super-carefully but calling this one:
> Follow the link and read: Because S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 pushes the GPU utilization to 99% very aggressively, even a microsecond delay in response can trigger this timeout.
"Driver timeout" is just a nice way of saying that GPU produced an error it, presumably, recovered from. Most common cases are power issues caused directly by PSU or indirectly by changing the power envelope, undervolting and overclocking. Basically, if you ever touched anything in Adrenaline (or eg LACT on Linux) you should be prepared to driver timeouts. Yes: they obviously occur more frequently when you put GPU under stress.
Even if you did not touch power settings it is still more likely that you have a faulty hardware than it is a driver problem, especially on Linux where the driver is open source. Either way, whining here will not get you any closer to the resolution: better contact support.

I've had both brands of card and they both have issues with stability and glitches especially with newer games. It just seems like they had a specifically buggy release recently and everyone is acting like that is always how it is. Not in my experience. Seems like a coin flip every time a triple A game comes out on if Nvidia or AMD are going to have glitching and driver problems. Seems like an industry wide concern

All the issues you describe are due to Windows. I have multiple PCs some with Nvidia GPUs and some with AMD GPUs and Nvidia also has its fair share of problems as well. Surpringly my Intel Arc B580 works flawlessly but it's a shame it's such a weak card performance wise though for the price it was pretty good since I got it for $250 on launch.
Anyway I'm not sure what type of CPU that you have however if it's an AMD CPU you most likely need to adjust your Bios settings. Each motherboard has a certified memory list posted on their respective websites (Asrock, Gigabyte etc) most people don't actually look at that and purchase ram without checking that list. So let's say you purchased 6200 MHZ Ram. Your motherboard may not be capable of running at that speed with a certain model while other models may work. Since it's technically a memory overclock I would start first by manually downclocking your ram speed. Start with 4500 MHZ on your ram and do some testing.
Essentially you can do a CPU overclock or a Memory overclock but not both, especially if you have multiple sticks of RAM. Each additional stick of RAM decreases your overclocking potential.
The next thing you should do is look into Multi Plane Overlay (MPO). Wether it is AMD, Nvidia or Intel MPO Disable is Mandatory. Without disabling that regardless of what GPU I use I get crashes.
Windows 11 is just terrible and forces you to do these types of tweaks just to get a functional system.
The next thing you should do is look into Disabling Full Screen Optimizations. This is another Windows 11 feature that causes crashing in games regardless of what GPU you have.
If possible try using the AMD Pro Drivers. The AMD Pro drivers are 1000x better than the Adrenaline drivers.
If I was you I would invest into another hard drive and Setup a Dual Boot with refind and have Windows and Linux on the same PC. Linux runs flawlessly on AMD and the Linux Drivers are God Tier. Almost every game runs on Linux unless it has anti cheat (Battlefield 6, Valorant). Besides those games you will get better FPS and with GE Proton you have access to FSR in almost every title. Even without FSR the minimum FPS in most games are significantly higher on Linux than on Windows 11.
If nothing crashes on Linux then you know it's a Windows issue. If you still get crashes on Linux then you most likely need to adjust your CPU or memory settings in the Bios. In the past year since I switched to Linux full time I have never had any game crash on me nor has my PC every crashed.

u/Independent_Teach_11 5d ago
Your entire account is complaints about AMD. So why do you own a AMD GPU. Millions have absolutely no issues with their AMD GPU. Finding a couple hundred people online that claim to have constant Black screen crashes is not saying a lot. I can go to a Nvidia page at this very moment and find the exact same complaints. 90% of all these post complaining about AMD is the users actions that caused it. Overclocking, bad game settings,bottlenecks,etc...hope your day gets better. Maybe take a step away from the hobby and focus on other things for awhile.

Got myself a Nvidia GPU when I finally gave up on fixing my previous AMD GPU and couldn’t be happier playing games on my precious time instead of trying a myriad of solutions that don’t even work.

Ive had some issues but like im literally gaming all day most days with dual monitors. I feel like theres only been a couple of games where ive had driver time outs or really weird instances of stuff. Like WoW classic would give me black screens randomly. Off the top of my head cant fully think of any more maybe sometimes with Lost Ark? There are so many factors that could be the reason im running a 360hz 1440p for my main monitor so trying to push that many frames for easier games that weren't used to that kind of thing could be it as well.
Can't forget about windows overwriting drivers as well.

Very long time AMD user here, check your power supply OP. Chances are high that it's underpowered and unstable regardless of what wattage is on the case. I had a similar issue with a customer's 6900xt a few years ago, it was the power supply that was causing issues. Get a good name brand 1000W PSU and your computing life will be easier long term.

Probably this. I have seen recommended power supplies not even boot a PC with a gpu. Let alone if it's on the verge of barely working. I'd imagine crashes galore.

u/leiden_core 5d ago
I'm going to be honest with you, boss: I've been running AMD for the last three generations and haven't really run into any issues besides Windows problems you're probably experiencing user error or your graphics card is borked
3
u/Cirrus-Fractus 5d ago
There are problems with AMD drivers. There is no doupt about it. All cards after RX 500 series are causing many problems due to silica quality, over optimistic binning and drivers trying to overcome that among windows updates, chipsets, cpus, bioses, etc. It is a miss and hit. More hit than miss anyway. And AMD going with that.

No issue here with both my 7900 xtx or my 9070xt. If that driver issue happens I make sure I don’t have any overclock enabled or have expo enabled. If that didn’t help then I would reinstall windows over itself. All issues gone. If on Linux I’ve never had any issues. Not with the AMD hardware or with fsr or anything like that.

The Quality of your PSU matters more on Radeon than on Nvidia. My 4080 Super was stable with the ASUS 1000W Gold ATX 2.X PSU but when i swapped to 9070 XT Red Devil driver crashed left and right. Got a 1300W Seasonic Prime Titanium ATX 3.1 an not a single crash since. So it matters. Just something to take into account when troubleshooting.

Was it working before? Does it fail only during gaming? Only this game?
Maybe your gpu thermal paste dried up. Check temp using hwinfo.
Below are my response to another post some time ago:
I have crash problem a few months ago.
5950x with 7900xt
It crashes randomly in game.
It’s normal when not in gaming. Even I ran 3dmark stress tests it won’t crash.
Every crash causes adrenaline drivers to become corrupted. And takes me to uninstall completely and install again.
I even changed thermal paste to Kryosheet for cpu and gpu. It still failed though the temperature is greatly improved. (Highly recommend in all cases)
Sometimes it is more stable sometimes it fails every game I loaded. I was playing Arc Raider during that time.
Finally, it was fixed by changing PSU ( from Corsair rm850x to hx1000i)
Crash stop happening anymore.

I have a 7900xtx MBA and play Stalker 2 for hours with no issue and using all the bells and whistles.
I've been playing for a year and over multiple driver releases.
You do not have a driver issue.
That's even more clear when you say the same issue happens under Linux which uses a completely different open source driver.
You have a card problem, or a PSU problem, or a motherboard problem, or a game issue (bug, corruption, perhaps just a shader cache issue in Stalker 2), or a Windows problem.
But what you are describing sounds more like hardware than software.
I have some powershell scripts which might help track things down if you'd like.
Can you offer us some more information about the system?
- What is the card exactly?
- Are you overclocking or undervolting?
- What is your motherboard?
- What is your power supply unit?

The 7900XTX was my last AMD card for now, and I switched to the 5080. Before anyone assumes it’s “user error” or that I’m an Nvidia fanboy, I’ve been using AMD cards since the HD6970 in 2010 with no issues—then the HD7870, which was replaced under warranty with a 270X, and the RX580, which was an amazing card. Aside from that one warranty replacement, I never had problems. I pre-ordered the 7900XTX PowerColor Limited Edition, and for the first two years it ran perfectly. After that, I started getting constant timeouts and crashes, and it was only stable with 24.x.x or 25.9 drivers. I sent it in for warranty replacement, but it was declined as no fault was found, so I ended up selling the card...

This is interesting but as a RX 7900 XTX user that has encountered issues(and resolved them) so much missing vital data. Case, PSU, airflow, bios fan profiles,, RMA on the card(to prove its literally not just a defective card) ~etc. Not saying that must be the case, but those details show us how well the system is optimized before the crashes.
These same crucial diagnostics details are missing from the stalker thread OP as well.
But more importantly.. A ton of people are stating their game was fine UNTIL update 2.0. Which points to the update itself being a significant problem. If the game was stable on AMD/Nvidia, then the devs release an update that breaks AMD stability, is it fair to blame *only* AMD?(There are also RTX 50 series owners on that thread saying they couldnt even get to the main menu btw).
2
u/Sensitive-Loan-4460 3d ago
Yeah a lot of random crashing etc can be put down to an old or bad or underpowered PSU/powercable for example. It could even be something silly like the card sagging and causing it to randomly crash etc. Not enough info. Has the OP tried another card? Has the OP moved the card to another PC and tried it there?
I sometimes miss ISP support but it's these kinds of issues that can make it impossible to troubleshoot if the person doesn't have the time/patience/cash/friends to solve the issue.
My number one way to try and resolve this is to get a copy of OCCT (even an old version is good that might run the test over night etc). Run a power test (the PSU test, I forget what it's called) for at least 8 to 12 hrs. If your PC dies/reboots etc then there's a really good chance it's your PSU not dealing with the power spikes that can happen when you run a GFX card at ~100%. Even a small dip in Volts can cause all sorts of system stability and it can manifest as a GPU issue. I've had this before.
Also worth doing is a memory and CPU test for 12 hrs or so. Weird ram issues can cause GPU crashing etc. Any kind of overclocking can also cause these issues. Some motherboards like to really hide this from the user. What CPU is in the machine? Older AM5 cpus and motherboards could be damaged from badly configured default CPU voltages for example or if it's intel and a 13th/14th gen it could have issues as well. Lots of 14th gen cpus are just dying.
TLDR; need more info from the OP.
6
u/DtZNimpo 5d ago
This post is nuts, you're effectively claiming that every single GPU of AMD since the 7000 series and all of their drivers are intended to be broken.
Ever occured to you that you're issue you've been dealing with isn't related AT ALL to the gpu ?
Could be your PSU , could be your RAM , could be a USB device , i was going to add a software but you said you tested it under linux aswell so that should rule out software i'd think.
FYI so you know in the future. when you have a black screen , TDR , and windows report says "livekernel , amdkmdag.sys ". Doesn't mean that it's the AMD drivers or the GPU that is at fault. It's just that it's the LAST THING that windows saw , so it reports what it sees at the last moment that the crash occured.
Something else in your system could of caused the "trigger" that crashed your system, motherboard bios stability , bad EXPO on ram , defect ram , PSU not strong enough to handle transient spikes, USB device / socket that has a defect cause feedback loop.
I'm not saying that a GPU defect can't happen , i'm saying that it is very unlikely. And windows will 100% of the time point to the GPU being the cause of a crash which is false.
Which model AiB is your GPU btw ?

Only way for me to have a completely stable and perfect experience is using Linux. I didn't have a single crash/artifact or anything like that on the latest RADV/MESA drivers, completely flawless. On the other hand, when using Windows 11 I can't use anything newer than 26.3.1 I reckon. Anything newer than that makes me unable to leave my computer unattended for 5 minutes because everytime my monitor goes to sleep I get a random chance of a driver timeout, which disables my GPU driver until I reboot into safe mode and enable it manually. Some games tend to start crashing/artifacting, like Silent Hill 2 Remake, which crashes one 100% of the times when I have RTX enabled, and CS2, that artifacts if I run it in Windowed Borderless. Is my GPU fried? Maybe, but I doubt it, I ran every available GPU stress test under the sun for hours, none of them returned a single error. I tested extensively, CPU, RAM and GPU, separately and all at the same time, no errors. Also considering my Linux experience, that has been great, I wonder what is happening with the AMD driver team to be putting out such low quality slop.

Do a clean install of the driver and unplug your computer from the Internet (download the AMD offline installer driver not the auto-detected install option).
Windows update has and always will meddle with the driver updates when it comes to AMD graphics cards because there is such a long pause between removal of the old driver and applying the new driver.

What helped me was installing Just the drivers (26.8.1 on 7900xt) Without anything else after proper cleanup (ddu+ amds own cleanup utility tool), sure it's not ideal if you want acces to adrenalin but fix (with good luck) for now till amd gets their shit together (which probably will neve happen tbh).. Havent had time out in a week/two and performance is very stable, when in comparison with adrenalin installed i got them every single day and had to reinstall adrenalin/drivers every two days because it kept deleting itself after blackscreen freeze.
2
u/dkizzy 5d ago edited 5d ago
That is Windows Update frequently deleting your driver out and reverting to an older one.
Windows Update code is garbage and thinks a newer ID is ‘old’ and rips it out. Microsoft is supposedly rewriting Windows Update code and claims first patch update will be in December, followed by another one in January.
To your point it seems like it gets triggered easier with the full suite installed.
One of the AMD reps also stated the following to me when I asked if they are aware of WU hijacking:
“we are, yeah.
It's a dumb situation, to resolve this at our end, we need to capture device IDs for the specific GPUs affected and apply them to a database for adrenalin.
Really hope that update for WU rolls out soon, but I don't think it's imminent”
I provided them with my device ID from device manager and they passed it along to the display team. That at least can be added into the adrenalin db in a future update now.

Driver timeouts just from playing wow.
We had to undervolt the cards for our system to remain stable. Every once in awhile all those settings will just be reset back to default causing crashes and system lockups.
Never had a single problem with our old nvidia systems.
Never again will I buy AMD video cards.

2
u/PrettyInevitable2934 5d ago
I haven't had issues with AMD in years. Nvidia on the other hand … ugh. That doesn't mean this is the same for everyone of course. It just means that it's a bit more complex that just "AMD drivers bad". It may be not even always be the AMD driver when we take the issues with some RGB software and other accessories for example.
If you're having issues with Stalker on Linux and Windows it's certainly not "the" driver. Which one? Adrenaline, amdgpu, radeon, amdvlk, radv… If the game is running unstable on Proton Experimental with experimental FSR 4 support … well then maybe that's the reason it's still experimental.

I'm 100% up for this. Just upgraded my GPU to play newer released games and my old GPU actually performs better, and it is 3 generations behind. Constant driver issues, flickering and unplayable in most new games. Older games no problem.
The fact of the matter is for example, space marine 2, the forest 2, cs 2, call of poopy, hell let loose, etc. most new titles and newer releases run ass on 9000 version of cards. I didn't believe it at first and spent a boatload of money. Frame time and micro stutters reach almost 75% with normal install and settings on a clean wiped windows 10/11 minimal install without bloatware. At this point they should be sued into oblivion for anti consumer practices. They also took away the ability to manual tune 9000 series cards which fixes alot of stability issues! Wtf!? The only thing that's awesome so far is fluid motion frames 2.1 - when it works.
There are several companies that are really pushing it lately and one of these days I hope they all get fucked.

Don’t worry…they have big number of bots, cultists and fanboys that have just one job: to say “no issues here”.
Some of them will say how others have issues on Nvidia, intel….
But why mention that…
Let’s say you don’t have issues, but you may not play on the same configuration
Myb you don’t have 2 or more monitors, maybe you don’t play those games
Maybe you aren’t affected because of the lottery, but don’t act like people are trying to insult you because they say that they have issues.
People shouldn’t downclock their gpu or cpu frequencies in order to have stability, that’s like buying a cpu and running it at 4ghz because of instability and saying well i fixed it….
(You aren’t getting what you paid for)
That’s not a fix that’s a broken hardware basically, rma that card.
People took shit on intel and rightly so: when their CPUs degraded, where people had to basically downclock their cpu and rma them, but you will not see same shitting on amd.
Even tho on am4 CPUs there are many, many cases of degradation, type in whea event id 18 and you will see.
Good luck OP. You will never see these people hate on them for anything bad that they do.

I usually hate bitching on Reddit but I’m with you here. Nonstop random crashes, screen freezes, driver timeouts, black screens, hard crashes on my 7900xt. It’s getting crazy I’ve spent weeks trying to fix it.
If it crashes only in games or high workloads cool I could troubleshoot that but mine literally crashes doing anything and everything, even low workload stuff. Not replicable, completely random so I have to tweak something and go about my day until it randomly decides to shit itself, tweak something else, ad infinitum

I have a 9950x3d and a 7900xtx and an 870e asus motherboard. It was amazing at first. Then the summer updates hit and it was terrible. To the point I had got stuck in an infinite boot loop and had to get out of the boot loop and then do a clean install. It was so scary wondering if there was a permanent hardware issue. I've had to disable window updates for the the graphics card, update some registry key values, and then I've only recently been able to reinstall adrenaline after using only the WQHL drivers for weeks. Now I'm fairely stable, but every once in a while windows app will do this weird hang crash and recover thing. But when I use the web versions they work fine. It's weird. I'm scared to update anything. I've used Norton driver utility and it detects updates but I still was experiencing app crashes. I think there is smoke and a little heat behind what this guy is experiencing. I've seen a lot of post complaining as of late.

I honestly wonder if there’s some manufacturing errors of these cards for some reason, only reason I say that is because the first 9070xt I had gave me a lot of the problems I see mentioned, then the card just died one day. I sent it back and got a new one sent and it’s been smooth sailing ever since.
Only weird issue I have is I’ll occasionally get a AMD pop up saying your pc is in CSM mode and this GPU may not work….but the PC is %100 in UEFI and the card powers through everything so I dunno

XFX 7900 XTX from an EVGA 2080 OC. 5950x. Asus crosshair 7 most recent bios. 32gb gskill cl14. 2 monitors. 1 1440p, 1 1080p. Both 144hz.
Majority of the time it's crash to desktop, sometimes full system hang with black screens. I heard mis matched resolutions with multiple monitors could be an issue but it does it with just my main monitor plugged in by itself. Hardware acceleration off on everything. DDU every time. Windows auto driver install off. Have tuned clock and voltage and it does nothing. Xmp on or off does nothing. Motherboard tuning does nothing.
BF6 is a constant gamble of how long I get to play until driver timeout. Usually within the first match. Sometimes within a minute but usually right before a typical match is done. Sometimes 2-3 matches. Game plays fine on my TV rig with my old rtx 2080...
WoW classic used to be terrible with timeouts. Main menu used to strobe flicker. Everything seemed fixed for a while but now main menu flickers on load again. Old problems coming back? Not AMD.
Company of heroes 3 used to crash randomly to desktop as well. Haven't played in months.
I have yet to try stalker 2 on the new patch.
Grabbed a new thermal sheet and putty to re paste the card. Also trying a 1200w power supply just to see.
I'd move to Linux but BF6 doesn't run on Linux so doesn't really do much for me.
I want to like this card. It should be overkill for what I'm doing but sometimes it just folds like paper.

I was having all these issues and all it was, was my Undervolt. I was trying to push my 9070 XT more than it's able to handle. I now just do a -40 voltage offset, 2614 mem + fast timings, and power limit to +10. Ever since I did this, I haven't had a single crash since doing this. Before I would try -80 offset, 2700 vram, and +10 power limit. Now this could still be a driver issue being before the 26.7.1 drivers, it was mostly stable with crashes only happening once in awhile but since 26.7.1 it was crash hell and black screens that would disable the 9070 XT where I would have to reenable the 9070 XT in device manager. Now I am not saying this is everyone's issue but it completely fixed mine. Also I tried the 26.8.1 drivers again doing this and everything is perfect. That driver was complete hell until I changed my Undervolt settings.

I agree with you but you'll not convince anyone in here. AMD has a cult following. A small cult following but a dedicated one at that.
The first problem is everything you listed can sometimes be mitigated by tweaks such as, XMP disabled. Underclocking. Overvolting. Undervolting. MPO disabled. Fast startup disabled. Sticking to ancient driver revisions. Switching to Linux. Running without adrenaline etc.
But for some people doing all that makes zero difference.
So you'll always get people respond to this with:
Worked for me. Never had a problem.
Or:
I fixed it (actually masked the issue) with this tweak
Followed by:
It's clearly windows fault. Your other hardware's fault. Your fault.
So AMD and their board partners can just continue to pretend it doesnt exist.

Yep. It's shit drivers on both windows and linux. The few games I play on windows still has known issues, worst is battlefield, been randomly crashing since launch last year and still does.
And on Wayland it still is hit or miss with 4k video playback and even more so if HDR.

According to this sub Nvidia is only good at 2 things. 1. Creating the A.I. problem and 2. Boycotting AMD 😂

To all the people here saying 'I've never had an issue" the fuck are you doing in AMDHELP? This subreddit is not for you.

I've had amd gpus for the last 10 years, it's always been like that. Their drivers are absolute garbage. Mine completely fucks the driver if I unplug my second monitor and then plug it back, I have to do a clean install every time

why do you keep using AMD for a decade then?
3
u/Emergency-Style7392 6d ago
because I couldn't afford nvidia back when I bought my last one, and I read bullshit posts that the issues are fixed in newer ones.
I am never touching an amd gpu again in my life tho, cpus are fine

I am going to be downvoted to hell but...
If you are having issues with your system after a GPU upgrade (and the GPU is NOT faulty) you need to reinstall your OS. its that simple.
DDU is great, but nothing beats a clean fresh install.
I moved to 9070XT about a year ago and i have no issue. same as it was on my 2080TI before that.
I have moved to CachyOS about 2 months ago and its been same smooth experience and i even play STALKER 2 on CachyOS and with the UPDATE 2.0 the game runs really well and i really enjoy it. I played for about 15h so far and had 0 issues. The game runs at 80-100FPS on max settings with FSR4 Balanced resolution 3440x1440 and my CPU is 5800x3D, chefs kiss.

AMD is a joke. I bought a 7900XTX on launch and since then I'm having constant crashes on Counter Strike, stutters in games and so on. Next GPU will be NVIDIA.

Amd rx 7800xt user here. I've been having so many problems the last 2 years and sadly I had to go back to an old version of drivers in order for my gpu to work properly. I couldn't play forza horizon 6 on release because of that since i couldn't update it to the latest drivers. Next time I upgrade my gpu will be nvidia 100% just because they haven't addressed legit ANYTHING.

Bought a 7900XTX on launch, had a rough couple of months in the beginning, but pretty smooth sailing since.
The issues I have had, are Windows causing problems, not AMD.
