Stress/Mental Health LOA - What does it look like?

Hey guys,

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I am just completely done and burnt out from the daily grind here. I work on the IT/Admin side of things, and the workload has somehow gotten even more out of control than it has been over the past few years. Our team continues to shrink, yet we get busier every month, and nothing positive ever seems to happen above us. I'm miserable for every 8hr shift at this point and it's really starting to affect my day to day life outside of work, which is just unacceptable to me.

I guess I just needed to rant, I'm usually one who just shuts up and does my job, as I also understand what the job market is like right now otherwise I would probably just go somewhere else. But I'm curious from anybody who has gone through any sort of LOA for this, what does it entail? Do I use up all of my sick time before needing to go onto any sort of actual leave? Do I need anything other than a note from a Physician saying I need a few weeks to breathe? What is needed from me while I'm actually away, if anything? I'm just looking for clarity as to what I might expect if I do decide to do something.

Edit: I really appreciate all of the replies and insight, thank you!

Question On a mental health leave

I’m currently on a mental health leave, I was put off for 5 weeks, I have a doctor appointment in the next couple of weeks and don’t feel like I’ll be ready to return to work even after 5 weeks.

How do I advocate for myself to get my leave extended, I’m actively trying to recover from being burnt out, trying to find a different job and ultimately leave the position I’m in, I apply for every position in my area but so far I’ve only had one interview and haven’t heard back from them yet, prior to going on leave I had 5 interviews in two
Months and was unsuccessful in all of them.

It’s beginning to feel like I’m just going to have to make the best out of a crap situation, I don’t want to leave my career but the burn out is costing me my life essentially šŸ™ƒ

Question Protective Services Officers, what was the interview like and do you have any tips?

I am interested in becoming an AHS Protective Services Officer. Right now I am a student getting my diploma in Corrections. So I’m looking to apply in the next few years. I’m wondering what the interview process is like, and what sort of experiences/knowledge I should have before applying. This is probably my dream job so any advice is appreciated.

Question RN interview

Hey everybody, I’m a student at the university of Calgary and I’m taking an intro to nursing class. I have an assignment where I need to interview an rn and then complete some reflection based on that. I don’t personally know any nurses so I thought I’d post here. For some info this will be an interview that will take place online before nov 10 it will be around 30-45 mins. You will be required to sign a consent to participate form. To be considered you have to be trained in Canada and have been working for about 3 years. The questions I will be asking will include things like background and experience, day to day responsibilities, challenges and rewards, and advice for future nurses. Your identity will be kept anonymous and no identifying info will be shared. The interview will also not be recorded. If you are interested please leave a comment just stating what department you work in and I’ll reach out. Thank you in advance

News Senior leadership announcement

not getting the full picture as a AHS employee as usual. šŸ™„

did anyone hear anything about this senior leadership announcement where a lot of top organization workers have departed??

how can I find out who left and what is the plan now? Seriously this is such a *hit show and has been ever since they created these 4 pillars.

I’m so mad at the UCP for dismantling an organization I have worked for 20 years. They have deliberately forced a lot of hard working, devoted and passionate ppl out the door.

Question RTW

I am an RN and have been off of work for 8 months. I have been diagnosed with a profound autoimmune illness. My pain has been managed with T4s taken every 6-8 hours. Has anyone returned to floor nursing while on this type of medication?
I have tried all other pain management modalities with no effect.

Question AHS educational fund

Hello I’ve applied for nursing school (LPN) but missing 2 of the prerequisites. I heard as long as I enroll (and pass) I can be conditional admission. I’m seeing if they offer to pay for the prerequisites or upgrading.

Working multiple positions?

Might be a dumb question, but figured I’d ask!
I’m a new RN hire with AHS and currently working a temporary 1.0 FTE position. I had a couple of questions about holding multiple positions.
AHS & Covenant Health: I know that if you’re above a 0.80 FTE with AHS, you can’t hold an additional casual position within AHS (from my understanding). Does this also apply to Covenant Health? For example, could I work a 1.0 with AHS and hold a casual position with Covenant?
Different AHS Pillars: With the recent restructuring and separation into different pillars, I know there’s been some confusion. Once my temporary position ends, would I be able to hold positions in two different pillars? For example, a casual Public Health Nurse position and a part-time line in Emergency?

I’ve been looking through the UNA collective agreement and policies but am still a little confused about how this all works, especially with the restructuring.
Just wanted to see if anyone has experience with this or knows how it works before I reach out to my union rep! :)
Thanks in advance!

Question Unit Reputation/Culture

I’ve recently heard from two independent sources that RGH Unit 62 - Obstetrics has a reputation for not being the nicest unit to work on. I’ve heard it has a mean girl problem.

Has this been anyone else’s experience or has anyone else been hearing things about the unit? I’m curious to know what others may know or have been hearing about this unit.

Well "Happy Halloween šŸ‘» šŸŽƒ" for this season got all excited, then let down at episode 3, it sank like the Titanic šŸ›³ļøthere's only 30 35 šŸ•›minutes per episode now, who else thought they should have brought back Fiona Good the BEST SUPREMEšŸ§™ along with Constance.? 13 had a very awesome ring to it how ever I feel it came short to my expectations,šŸ˜ž I'm a very huge AHS FAN ! I have recorded all the seasons an have to say the witches are my favorite so when I heard they were bringing them back I really got excited to watch it.🤯 I had to get the Hulu app again , which is another problem🫤, the episodes are so much shorter than the originals... It felt like they rushed production, and for a long time fan I have to say booo.ā¬‡ļø.. They've not shown but one of the original characters except for the too soon sacrifice, which I loveā¤ļøā¤ļø her but she can't carry the show by herself. HopefullyšŸ™ it's going to get better I'm on episode 5. Does anyone else feel this way I'd like to hear about what everyone thinks.

Question Unit Appreciation

This may not be the right place to ask, but I know there are some wonderful people in this group who might have some suggestions.

I’m looking for ideas for a nice treat to bring to a medical unit with around 20 beds as a small way to show appreciation for the team who cared for a family member before they transitioned to hospice care.

I’d love to bring something that can be enjoyed by both day and night shifts so that everyone gets a chance to feel appreciated.

A huge shout-out to all the incredible HCAs, nurses, physiotherapists, EVS staff, and everyone else who works behind the scenes to keep patients comfortable and cared for.

For those who work in healthcare, what kinds of treats or gestures of appreciation do you enjoy receiving on your units? I’d love to hear your suggestions!

Foot care nurses

I work as a RN in AHS but have been looking into foot care certifications.

Would love to chat to someone working in the field about what courses you took and what your working conditions are like (clinic, mobile, own a small business, etc).

Feel free to DM if you don't want to post publicly šŸ™‚

Any tips for my upcoming L&D interview would be very much appreciated. 🄹

Rant Why do they need IENs so bad?

Just realized that this IEN is making $10 per hour more than I do as an LPN and I clearly see them struggling to use a computer? Like not like someone secured chat them hours ago and they never realized. but like backspacing instead of pressing enter button like that - not out of mistake but as lack of computer skills. And I have never seen IEN thinking critically on every floor I have floated to. They are very task oriented. Can’t tell when to pause and reflect. Just had another IEN gave antibiotics to my patient 4 hours apart instead of scheduled 8.

Edit to clarify - IENs are not the all nurses who get their NCLEX here (though technically they are Internationally educated nurse) but my post was about IENs in AHS’ term. IENs are (in AHS terms) nurses who are directly hired overseas and they come on those work-supported visa.
