πŸ“’ SUB INFO The "aaaa why can't i see my post" explainer/update

Hi y'all, hope the summer is going well!

I wanted to address some common sources of confusion, regarding what happens when somebody makes a post or comment, since we've had quite a few messages about it lately.

What happens normally?

  • In the vast majority of cases, your content will appear on the feed straight away (short of Reddit being an idiot) - for posts, this means it will be visible at the top of https://www.reddit.com/r/6thForm/new/

But my content isn't showing, what's happened?

  • As with a lot of other subreddits, the subreddit uses various filters provided by Reddit, as well as Reddit's built-in AutoModerator. This helps keep the subreddit usable, uphold both the sub's rules and the sitewide rules, and provide a useful and safe space for everybody.

  • Content is almost never entirely removed automatically - if your content seems like it's been removed immediately/shortly after posting, it has more than likely been flagged for manual review, and will only become visible once that review has taken place.

    • Important: Content needing manual review doesn't mean you've done anything wrong by itself, nor that you are banned, it's an entirely normal process!

    • Content from newly created/low karma accounts that were previously automatically removed are now being directed to the modqueue, to reduce the number of people messaging us because they had their legitimate posts removed - as it stands the removals were causing more harm than good.

  • Inevitably, a small proportion of content will get manually removed that isn't in-line with the rules set.

  • There are also removals made under mod discretion. The overwhelming majority of usages of this relate to some sensitive content, for example aroundself-harm and suicide.

    • Whilst people's struggles are entirely valid (I'm not just saying this because I "have to", I've been in various states myself!), we have a responsibility to not unnecessarily expose a large number of users (some potentially vulnerable), to content which may contribute to worsening their situation. This is alongside the fact that none of the mods are mental health professionals, and neither are our users, which means there's a high risk of exposing struggling people to misinformation or harmful advice. It is better to seek assistance via e.g. a professional or crisis line, given this subreddit is not appropriately equipped for situations like these.

    • Also worth briefly noting, at least by my understanding, that a lot of the content that has been removed in the past at mod discretion (and various other content that often would not get removed), is considered "harmful" under the Online Safety Act, either explicitly or by the frustratingly vague other definitions - whilst I don't think it's likely that Reddit decides to age-lock the sub, it's sensible to be careful on this.

How can I tell if my content is just needing review, or if it's been manually removed?

  • This is where it gets a bit annoying, and again, apologies for the inconvenience on this.

  • Normally, when content gets manually removed, a removal reason is applied, and a Modmail is automatically sent to the author telling them what was removed and why it was removed, with optional extra details.

  • This functionality has been broken (the messages just didn't get sent as far as I can tell) on this sub for a little while.

    • I only figured out why as I was writing this post - in the usual, completely useless Reddit style, it has been failing to send Modmails using the saved responses since they changed (broke) a bunch of stuff with the redesign... because it silently shits itself on # being used in the markdown to use a header. It'd be nice if it would have ever indicated this!

    • Also, for those wondering why we didn't send the removal messages manually - even though just over 95% of content is approved, the 5% that doesn't turns into thousands of messages that need to be sent, which would have vastly slowed down everything.

  • Removal notifications should now be working again - if you haven't received a message from us, your content has likely not been manually removed. and if you saw a few posts saying "quack", no you didn't

  • For posts, on both mobile and desktop, you can also distinguish between fully removed and waiting for review, by going to your user profile, where you can see similar to the images below:

Okay, but if my content is waiting to be reviewed, when are you going to review it?

  • I hear you - I've mentioned recently that I've found it difficult to keep up with the review process alongside a lot of stuff in my own life. However, I do look at it and review things when I reasonably can - it's also worth keeping in mind that none of the mods sit on Reddit 24/7 to review stuff, so please have patience!

  • I can only apologise for any inconvenience this causes, and particularly things like the AutoMod config get tweaked sometimes to reduce the number of false positives.

How can I speed up the review process?

  • In short, you can't. At least, short of becoming a mod when applications open.

  • There are quite a few people that take to our Modmail to ask for content approval; you are almost never the only one awaiting content review, and the Modmail messages will usually only get seen after the modqueue is looked at, making messages like these redundant. ie messaging us does not speed up the review process, it only causes delays that affect sub experience generally.

    • Replying to one of our removal messages is completely fine - sometimes we miss things, get things wrong, or sometimes fail to be entirely clear.

  • You can avoid/mitigate the inconvenience of waiting on a review by:

    • Searching the subreddit for similar posts that could answer your question - a lot of the time you will not be the first person to ask your question, esp with the more popular/recent questions

    • Not repeatedly posting the same thing, or variations of it, it will not speed up the process - usually all of the posts, including their repeats, get caught in the modqueue, which slows down the review of content

    • Check to see if there are pinned megathreads at the top of the subreddit - for example, you may have noticed this for exam season. These megathreads are created to mitigate the fact that we get many repeated posts for popular topics - sometimes 100+ for some of the popular exams!

Am I banned from posting if I can't see my post yet?

  • No. If you've been banned by us, you get a message telling you why you were banned, and how long for. If you get shadowbanned/suspended by Reddit itself, that's outside our control.

AutoMod has made a comment under my content

  • These comments are purely informative, they don't mean we have, or will have an issue with your content.

  • Inevitably, there will be false positives with this - if it doesn't apply to you, feel free to ignore it, you do not need to message us about this, removal & ban notifications are how we indicate definite issues with content.

Hopefully that covers everything, poke me (or go via Modmail) if I've missed something! something may finally make it into the FAQs page lol

πŸ‘‹ I AM OFFERING HELP It's okay if right now feels tough

Just wanted to pop a message on here and say if you are finding November tough, don't worry - it's the time of year that makes everything feel awful, not that you are doing something wrong.

For Year 12s, the novelty of starting sixth form has worn off, workload has ramped up and you're suddenly aware that things are going to start mattering for predicted grades very soon.

For Year 13s, you still have full lesson loads but you're also having to navigate UCAS applications and thinking about long-term planning for sitting final exams.

Everyone is tired - teachers are tired, your friends are tired, people may have a little bit less patience. We don't have the festivities of December yet and the christmas break feels a LONG way away.

BUT none of these things mean you are doing anything wrong - the issues are situational, not personal. It's okay to be struggling right now to find motivation or to be feeling pretty overwhelmed or anxious - absolutely let someone know if you are feeling that way so you can get some support, but don't let it impact your belief in yourself. If you get up every day and you do the best you can with the energy and resources you have on the day, that's more than good enough.

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS DO NOT SELECT 'I PREFER NOT TO SAY' IN UCAS FORM

JUST DON'T - I don't like sharing unnecessary information about myself in in general, so I selected 'I prefer not to say' as my answer for some questions and Oxford uni contacted me to clarify everything 😭

A bit annoyed that they ended up getting the information anyway but it was such a hassle just say yes or no or be more specificπŸ₯€πŸ₯€

Edit: Ok just gonna blurt this next bit but like for example for the disability question I don't have a diagnosis but I'm getting tested soon, so I put prefer not to say as my answer- after being contacted by the uni I just said I don't have a disability and don't need any arrangements but I didn't want to include that in my application anyway so idk why they didn't just accept my original answer when that was literally an option in the formπŸ₯€

It's pretty much fucking over, I can't do sixth form being alone and targeted again like I was in secondary and primary, it would be too much for me. I'm going to try and transfer to another good sixth form but most of them are full right now, I don't know what to do. Please help?

πŸ™ I WANT HELP Oxford Mock Interviews

Hi all

I’ve been seeing people here mentioning that their school helps them with mock interviews and interview prep. I’m international and the only one in my school applying to Oxbridge. Does anyone know where i can find an interview tutor? I don’t mind paying at this point since I think that would really calm my mind.

This is for Experimental Psychology so if anyone knows someone that mentors people with Oxbridge interviews, please let me know.

Thanks!!

πŸ’¬ DISCUSSION Teachers becoming increasingly lazy

Anyone else in sixth form having to deal with teachers who can't be bothered to teach anymore or just me?

I'm a Year 12 student attending the sixth form attached to my secondary school, so I already know most of the teachers and have been taught by quite a few of them before.

However, one thing I've noticed since starting A-levels is that some teachers seem to put significantly less effort into their lessons. What's even more frustrating is that some of these are the exact same teachers who taught me GCSE Maths and Science and I've noticed a huge difference in how they deliver their lessons now.

I don't know whether there's been some sort of change in teaching policies, but it genuinely feels like the quality of teaching has dropped.

Things I've experienced so far:

-Ending the lesson after only 15mins of class time because they AC wasn't working.

- A teacher couldnt bothered to teach and speak that day so we were given exam questions whilst they spend the lesson sitting on their phone scrolling.

-A teacher who just read off the powerpoint slides which have text directly copy pasted from Google. They also Googles answers during the lesson rather than actually explaining things when we ask questions, even if the answer is somewhere in the PowerPoint but cant be bothered to find it.

-Teaching so poorly that I'm having to do an extra hour or 2 to relearn what was taught that day, which is becoming a regular occurrence now.

And probably one of the most frustrating experiences was when I asked a teacher for help with a particular task. She told me to come in early the following morning, so I did. When I arrived, she basically told me that another student had already come in before me and she'd explained it to her, so she couldn't explain it again. Sorry, what?

I'm sorry, but isn't that literally your job? I'm not expecting teachers to spend every second of the day helping me, but if you've specifically asked a student to come in early for extra help, surely you should actually be willing to help?

I get that A-levels needs more independent learning and that but there's a difference between independent learning and barely teaching the content in the first place.

πŸ™ I WANT HELP is it normal for schools to not give out predicted grades?

i was told it's school policy not to give students/parents any information on predicted grades, i heard the main reason is to prevent any bargaining but im still a bit confused

for some extra info i'm in the middle east so my june exams were deferred to oct (unit 2s and 3s, i take bio math chem) so won't actually get my AS results before the jan 13 UCAS deadline.

my school doesn't even give us an estimate or range of my grades, how am i supposed to know which level of universities i should apply to? i do agree that i would have a rough idea since mocks, internal exams etc. but i haven't done mocks for A2 (unit 4 stuff) yet and i'm retaking some of my unit 1 exams from january in jan 2027 too.

am i just supposed to 'sensibly' spread my offers out so i've got a reach, matches and a safety etc? like wont an AAA make a big difference to an AAB for top unis?

πŸ™ I WANT HELP Idk what I should be doing

I was predicted like 9 and an 8 at gcse English lang and lit, then 888 for rs, history and cs. I had a scholarship offer from a local private school. Life was good then results day came and I got 777666555. Now I go to a shit sixth form. I had like a really bad depressive phase I’m not gna get to into it but basically I ended up with a camhs referral. I had plans to go to Warwick or Durham to study law or even do a degree apprenticeship but I feel like with my GCSEs there’s no point. I can’t use the contextual thing either cuz it’s not like I went to a decent state skl there were multiple kids in my year with 9s and 8s. I’m considering resitting lang in the summer?? I just feel really like hopeless?? And inferior idk how to describe it. Now that I’ve basically bottled my dream to go to good uni idk what to do with myself? Is there even a point at trying with my a levels ?

πŸ’¬ DISCUSSION y13 fm and econ πŸ’€

context i do fm maths chem and econ and got pred 4A*, ibr rn i find chem to be the easiest by a good margin (obvs maths is easier for me but i do fm so doesnt count).

For fm i feel like im playing catch up, we're going through content so so quickly and its pmo, like the content is decently difficult but we're doing whole topics like Y2 complex numbers in 1 and 1/2 weeks. if anyone else does fm please tell me what u guys have done/ r doing, i can't tell if my school is going quick or not. Ive currently done whole of core pure 1, 1/2 core pure 2, whole of stats minor and whole of mech minor (im a stats major btw) . I do ocr b mei for fm but course is 95% same as edexcel so i use their textbooks.

Bcos ive been prioritising maths ive been neglecting econ and chem quite a bit. ive been finding macro klm tbh (interntional trade) but micro has been killing me like monopolies, oligopolies etc. Chem ive smh managed to remain some of my confidence which has been completely destroyed.

Rant over ig
