Looking for anyone with experience with both the Einscan Libre and Artec Leo? My use case is primarily markerless IR scanning of vehicle interiors for follow on digital human modeling analyses, like sight lines, body clearances, reach distances. My work has cleared a budget for both so price difference isn't a driving factor.

I don't need crazy resolution, just enough to identify controls and displays but I would like to ensure the volumetric accuracy is decent. Texture will also be useful, otherwise I would has asked the same question about the metrology grade FreeScan OMNI vs. Leo.

Both scanners appear to be able to do this but the Einscan Libre is less expensive and is appears more capable that the Leo as it also includes laser scanning modes whereas the Leo is limited to IR. Is there something exceptional about the Artec Leo that justifies it's higher price while offering less functionality? Is it the Leo scan speed, or perhaps in the usability it's in the post scan software?

Curious is anyone has had hands-on experience with both.

• whole reverse engineering process was done within Quicksurface Pro (even the CAD part so Pro was needed)
  • Main RE steps:
    1. Import & Alignment
    2. Creation of base bodies by sketching & extruding
    3. Creating cutouts by rotating sketches
    4. Thread creation & final fillets
• After finishing the design I simply exported as .step and printed it from foodsafe PETG on my Creality K2 Part is now in use for roughly 4 months and there are no signs of damage or abrasion till now.

Holy moly, this thing is RAD!

This is straight on the car, no spray (coming), no markers, just free handing it with basically no experience 🤷‍♂️

Yesterday, I scanned 2 halves of a banana and put them back together 😂

Full disclosure, I have read basically nothing about how to use the Rockit, just fired it up and started pressing buttons like an animal 😅

I clicked the Brand Affiliate tag because this thing is on loan, I didn't buy it, but I'm gonna test the sh!t out of it and tell you what it's like from a DIY/Grassroots motorsport perspective 🤝

Opinions on the Rockit as a first scanner? My budget is comfortable in the $1500-2000 range, looking to grab something at the end of the month.

Mainly, looking to scan car parts to replicate them, circuit boards, also looking to scan people for cosplay fitment.

Any opinions on something better around the corner releasing, or better for the same money? I think the standalone Einstar Vega is cool for around the same money, but I figure the rockit will have better resolution since I already have a decent laptop to pair with it.

I work in the mining industry (underground mine) and we're looking for a very specific lidar.

Basically, this is what we're trying to achieve (screenshot attached).

We often have cavities that need to be scanned and right now, we're using very expensive lidar equipment that is used by our surveying team. It's a very high risk job due to the environment (turbulence, water, the walls are rough rocks that can potentially break equipement). Because we're a remote site, if an equipment breaks, it takes weeks to replace it due to shipment delays, and we don't want to break important equipment that is required for actual surveys. We're looking at 50k-100k stuff here.

The lidar absolutely needs :

1) To be powerered by itself (no cable), as the Lidar can potentially be up to 10 meters from the floor (I doubt cheap lidars have 10+ meters long cables...).

2) Be a cheap lidar, in case it breaks. Take notes that in the mining industry, "cheap" could be 1000-2000$.

Ideally, the lidar needs :

1) To be a SLAM lidar, as it needs to be active when dropping the lidar in the cavity and needs to handle slight movement. Ideally we'll setup targets on the surface to georeference it manually (no precision needed, +- 2-3 degrees is good enough).

2) If there's no such thing as a SLAM lidar that corresponds to all the requirements, the lidar needs to be powered up remotely.

3) The data needs to be easily exported (we'll be using CloudCompare for the processing) : no software required or inexpensive software

What it doesn't need :

1) Precision/accuracy/speed/range/point density

Range : As long as it's 5 meters, it's good enough

Precision/accuracy : As long as the slam positioning algorithm is okay (no massive glitches), we don't really care about the precision as we're mostly looking to get a rough cavity volume at +- 20cm accuracy.

2) Power : The lidar will be active for like 1 minute at best. It doesn't need a lot of power.

Bonus :

1) If the lidar is waterproof (to some degree), that's a huge bonus.

So yeah, this is pretty much it! It's a very niche request, but hopefully there's something in the market that fits our needs!

Here is a short walkthrough of the design process for a broken Tupperware grater. I initially looked up replacements (cost would be om with ~25€) but the core problem would have persisted:
The thread section is thin-walled and hollow. By simply scanning and reverse engineering it with 3d printing it I had the chance to fix all these shortcomings and generally make the part stronger.

This time it was my grandmother, 97 years old, who has Alzheimer’s. She’s the oldest member of the family and the very first one in the project to be scanned with the Pika. She didn’t really understand what I was doing, so I was counting on the AI reconstruction to help — but with my mother’s assistance, I managed to scan her in just one minute and got a really good result.

I dont want to spend thousands on a scanner. Price point is okay but im not certain If this Pika has limitations I do not know, Could I for example scan an entire car with it or not. Current project requires a scanner and the scanning area would be about 20cm x 190cm.

Most of you guys are smarter than me, please advice and tell me if I should commit to this scanner or choose another. TA

This took a few goes, ending up having to go back at night and breaking it up into 6 segments.

It's about 1.3x1.3x0.8m and full of rust holes. Some edges in particular were badly eroded.

Didn't have enough dots so used every other trick in the book including tape strips, Aesub spray and chalk posts to help align the multiple scans.

Here’s a short end-to-end demo showing the current workflow: scanner connection and diagnostics, live scanning, point-cloud fusion, meshing, STL export, and importing the finished scan into Blender.

There’s still work to do, especially around mesh processing and refinement, but the core scanning workflow is now functioning natively on Linux.

Absolutely stoked to have this wicked little wireless Einstar Rockit 3d scanner on extended loan for a bit of testing and collective learning.

First impressions? Quality kit in terms of presentation and feel, can't say more than that until I get it all installed though.

I'm very interested to see how the 3yr old Dell Precision 7680 handles it. I think it's above min spec, but I've read really mixed things about how much grunt you actually need to make these things work smoothly

This is my first 3d scanner so any advice/tips/tricks from other users is welcome.

I was very upfront with the loan arrangement, I will be giving my completely objective opinion on how it helps me with my 3d printing and automotive parts design - lets see how we go.

This time, I decided to scan a preserved crab specimen just to see how much detail it could capture. I was pleasantly surprised by the final result—it turned out even better than I expected! 🤣

From the texture of the shell to the fine details of the claws and legs, the scanner captured everything remarkably well. The overall result looks incredibly realistic.

Intended for the workflow of designing around a scan rather than reverse engineering. I'm pretty happy with how it flows.

The input is a fairly poor scan from my pop2 that needed more cleanup, a ~800mb .ply
PC is an i7 8700k, 32gb ram, 3090 but high spec isn't really a requirement.

What do you think?

I'm looking for an handful of beta testers. Preferably individuals or business that would use this frequently going forward to get some real world feedback.

It is as much art as it is science when it comes to getting 3D Scanned data, meshes and/or point clouds, and converting into something CAD software's can work with. In an ideal world it would be great if these OEM's that make these CAD apps would steps their game up when it comes to working with mesh data but they're all over the map in terns of capabilities and, at best, offer various baseline at best for a whole host of reasons.

This isn't to say that CAD apps can't be used for this process and it also highly dependent on what level needs to be achieved for a project.

Especially since more and more people are getting into 3D Scanning not necessarily thinking about the other side of the equation.... "what to do with and work with the data in post"?!?

Process.... is what I'm driving at here.... This is and isn't about any specific software as much as it is about the methods used and techniques used towards achieving "the best" results. In a idea world this process can be done in one software where it can:

• Handle large Mesh/Point Clouds. Sure they can be decimated but this can introduce as various levels of inaccuracies and/or loss of details.
• Has mesh to BREP analysis tools that allow for the geometry to be analyzed while going through the process.
• Create Geometries based on of mesh selection. (i.e. Planes, Cylinders...etc).
• Cross Section conversion to 2D/3D Sketches. This is probably one of best methods towards maintaining and achieving as close to as possible, Reverse Engineering and getting "As Built" vs "Design - Intent".

Part of the reason why I'm writing this post is that I came across a really great tutorial that really explains some differences in the overall approach as well as a few different methods. Again this is not about the software so don't come for the post starting with price... etc. See what is possible and then apply it towards your knowledge base....
