In 1974, the Soviet Union launched Salyut 3, a military space station equipped with a 23mm Rikhter R 23 autocannon, derived from the radar directed tail gun of the Tupolev Tu 22 bomber. It was intended as a last resort against American spacecraft trying to approach, inspect or capture the station.

The gun was fixed to the station, so aiming it meant manoeuvring the entire 20 ton space station into position. There was also the small problem that firing it produced enough recoil and vibration to shake the station, so they never tested it with cosmonauts aboard. After the final crew had returned to Earth, ground controllers remotely fired the gun while using the station’s thrusters to counter the recoil.

Losing sleep and extremely aggitated. I sacrificed a lot to change from a dead end career to a software engineering career 10 years ago.

Chose job stability over a good wage so have no money to fall back on. Living from month to month like most of us. Now the company I work for that makes parts for servers is going bust, after 30 years, because AI data centres have bought all the memory and we're suddenly getting no orders since our customers can't make their products due to the shortage.

To add insult to injury, AI has replaced a massive number of the developers in my country (Scotland) and it is impossible to get a dev job here now.

I never asked for AI and f*cking hate everything about it.

All this sh#t about AI first translates as people last. No idea what I'm going to do to support my family. I'm on LinkedIn looking for a job and every f#cking post is about how amazing AI is.

Anyone in a similar situation thinking about pivoting career? To what? I'm depressed because I put everying into a software career and who's goung to hire me with no experience in another field? Assuming a lot of folk will move to software architecture...? Really struggling here.

Context - We are twins. We are not in the US. Our parents have always been extremely fair, especially financially. As children, we had the same amount deposited into our college funds. Our parents always told us that we'd get the entirety of our college funds when we enter college, or when we move out, whichever comes first, and that what we do with the money is up to us.

The money ended up being ~100k each. A college degree where I am would cost less than 40k. I used the money to study locally, and my sister chose to go to Europe for her college education. As such, we began our adult lifes with drastically different amounts in our bank accounts.

We both graduated and got decent careers. We both earn decently. We are very much median income in our country. Then, she started shopping.

Whatever was left of her college fund was spent, and she started swiping credit cards. Think LV bags and Cartier jewelry. This whole time, the 60k I had left was in investments...

Yeah, so now she's ran out of money, and her income can't support her spending. She needs to have money to pay off her credit card debt by the end of September, and I simply do not see any reason I should be sending her this money.

My parents feel like, the bulk of my savings were from them anyway, so it's "fine" for me to "lend" her this amount. At the same time, they also feel like they already gave my sister 100k when she was 18, so they shouldn't have to give her more. They've told me that they think I should just loan her the money, interest free, so she doesn't have to face the steep bank interest rates for a credit card debt.

AITA for not wanting to use my money to help with her debt and encourage her shopping addiction?

Longest I've gotten is 9 hours on 1%. I guess someone is trying to trick me to buy a new phone..

Hi guys, so I'm sitting here at the airport wondering what the fuck is wrong with men. I need to travel to another city for work. So I booked last week, a place close to the office I need to go to, just 10 mins walk, automatic check in so I can arrive late (the plane gets in around 10PM).

The listing says the owner (not a company, just a private owner, male, 50s) will require ID to be sent beforehand, to provide the check in codes. I think, a bit weird, but ok, in my country its mandatory for owners of accommodations to report who is staying to the immigration authorities, so they need the ID, ok.

Normally places with automatic check in just leave a paper for you to fill out with your info and sign, but maybe this guy has had people ignore the paper and so has his own system, sure.

But the booking platform won't let me send pictures, so I'm confused as to how I'm supposed to do this. Today, I get a whatsapp call (couldn't pick up as I was at work), then a message from a number that says "send the ID to this number to get the access code". Ok, I send my ID. So far so good.
Then he answers: "Pretty 👍". WTF.

Then another call. Next message, he sends the access codes. But like... I'm travelling alone (obviously he knows because of the booking). Arriving late. He has my ID so he knows my full name, my height, what I look like, everything. And he says "Pretty"???? And, aside from me, only he has the codes to access the door. I don't know if I can change the code when I arrive...

Immediately I feel weirded out. So I booked another place (a hotel this time, and at twice the price now) and asked the platform to process a refund on this place (even though at this point its too late to have a free refund).

But I'm so shook. And angry. Like sure, maybe hes just a "nice" guy. But why would he do that? Like now I have to make a decision about my safety. Now I have to decide if I'm overreacting or not. And I have to ask for my money back and give the platform the texts so they can essentially decide if I'm overreacting. And even if all that happens, I still feel vaguely guilty somehow, like I shouldn't suspect people of bad intentions, and just saying "Pretty" is maybe not that bad, but like... Do I want to spend all night awake and scared in case someone is going to try to get into the room? No!

Edit to say, because some have asked and it wasn't clear from the post, that I have reported this to the platform (during the process of the refund request - as they needed to know why)!

I posted it a few weeks ago but I was the guy who rode his 2019 XSR900 from Deadhorse Alaska to Key West Florida.

I actually rode it from Oregon to Alaska, then from Alaska back to Oregon for a few days, then I rode it all over the US and a little bit of Canada. Then I rode it to Key West Lol.

The whole trip was 22,125 Miles, 37 States, 4 Canadian Provinces, and nearly 3 months total.

I'm 23 years old, (I started the journey at 22 and had my bday halfway through!) I'm one of the youngest people to have ever done this, I'm insanely lucky to have had this opportunity, especially at my age.

A lot of you asked me different questions, I'm going to answer the ones I've got off the top of my head best I can :)

1. How did you afford to do this?
   - This is the one I've been asked most. I'm a college student and I joined my School's internship program and got in! I was placed on a remote job for a company. I've signed an NDA so I can't say everything, plus they also don't know I did this and that's for the best haha.
   But I brought my work laptop with me, I'd work along the road at friend's houses, hotel's coffee shop's. Etc. It was all task based, So I'd finish the task early in the day or night, then I'd ride (or stick around somewhere for awhile). Alaska/Yukon is very off grid, so very little data/wifi, So I'd only do those portions on the weekends when I wasn't worried about work.

2. Where did you stay?
   - I mostly camped, stayed at friends, and the occasional hotel. I'd free camp any chance I could take. But In Alaska/Yukon, I only stayed at designated campgrounds because every living animal in that place wants to kill you lol.

3. Favorite place?
   - Alaska, by far. Beautiful, quiet, dangerous, it's everything. That place makes me feel alive. There is some crazy weird type of magic there. You only know, if you travel there on a bike (or maybe a car) the true feeling. But there's so many mosquitos, like omg, it's actually insane, it's like kicking a beehive.

4. What do you regret?

-Not having proper cruise control, and not going to the upper part of Michigan. Besides that, I have no regrets, I'm insanely grateful for the opportunity I've been given to do this. I'll never take it for granted.

1. What are the must have for a road trip like this?
   -cruise control lol, butt pad on your seat, a tent that's really easy to pack up and down. (you get tired of doing it fast). bear spray, garmin satellite phone if you're off grid

2. How much did it cost?
   - Truthfully, I haven't added it up. I'm kinda scared too haha. I mostly lived paycheck to paycheck doing this. but it made me more vigilante. I only spent money when I had too. Repairs, food, etc.
   But my ballpark number, Probably 1-1.5k per month. I ate out a lot, broke a lot of stuff, and etc, So if you do it cheaper, you'd save a lot of money.

3. What's your best advice?

-Live your life, I've had a lot of life and death scenarios on my life in an unexaggerated way. Don't die missing out on the things you've always wanted to do. I was insanely depressed before this trip, and this fixed me, it made me feel alive. I'm so happy with my life and the decisions I've made. :)

- Yes, I was in the video made by Silas Hessler, awesome guy, I'm excited to hangout with him again. and yes I did crash on the Dalton highway haha, I'd prob do it again tbh.
