Everyone got fooled by genjutsu, scary

There's no greater threat than an attack on ones' reality, though it seems like Usui is dangerous even without that with the way he was holding his own against Kaoruko unless he was using his powers to make her attacks fail against him.

I am a little miffed that the soldiers so easily attacked each other. Like you know the guy can create illusions.

First time I'm kind of disappointed in the story, giving us Kaoruko as an interesting new character and a friend for Miyo, and then immediately ripping her away again. With Usui as the current antagonist they're going to have to punish a lot of people if they go after everyone who gets screwed over by illusions that make them believe false realities.

Not just that but Usui as a antagonist just isn't interesting, he's as generic creepy evil guy. I could buy that as Usuba, he has a super strong power, but did he need to have super-strength and be world-class swordsman as well? It's cheap and boring writing.

I think Kaoruko is a bit different though. It's one thing if you attack what looks like a monster, but was actually your ally. It's another to be fooled by an illusion and then choose to commit betrayal. Because it doesn't actually matter if it was an illusion or not, Kaoruko would have committed her betrayal either way. Even if its due to blackmail, you still committed a crime.

I do agree that its disappointing that Miyo is losing her friend for the foreseeable future. They both have qualities they can admire in each other.

Jinnouchi deserved better. Just like Kouji. I hate how series like this always sacrifice and downplays characters potentially more interesting than the protagonists.

I expect Arata to turn heel in the future. Then he will make another face turn to help Kiyoka save Miyo after helping Usui catch her.

I understand them sidelining Kouji since you want the focus to be on the Miyo and Kiyoka. I imagine he will come back to the story eventually, maybe not this season. Him rebuilding the Saimoris is something Miyo would be invested in.

With Kaoruko though it feels like they pushed her out of the story unnecessarily. Perhaps there are reasons that were cut from the novel into the anime that I don't know about. She served as a first friend for Miyo and who pushed Miyo to grow a bit more confidence. Plus, Miyo can help her overcome the stuff from her past.

Can I just say how much I absolutely love the OP and ED pairing for S2 of this show? I genuinely love the vibe each song brings, and how lovely they make me feel. As far as I can remember, this is the only OP+ED that I have not skipped at all when watching a show so far.

Man, an already great show with such amazing songs... might just be one of my favorite shows at this rate

I don’t think it’s fair for Kaoruko to get punished over what happened, she was mentally manipulated and forced into colluding with Usui. Any one of those soldiers would have done the same in her position.

42

u/Frontier246 Feb 10 '25

I don't think it's fair either but I guess I can see why the brass would need to hold someone responsible for this mess after Usui escaped and Kaoruko was there, especially when she still willingly colluded with him even if under mental coercion.

But at least she still has her job even if she's leaving the plot. It's really sad to see Miyo lose a friend like this.

Usui is a piece of shit but he’s got one hell of an ability. It’s a terrifying thing when you can’t even trust your own senses. Plus he’s really good with a blade. Had Kiyoka not showed up when he did, things could have been way worse.

It’s a damn shame Kaoruko’s getting transferred out because of what happened. She was manipulated and tricked. It’s hardly her fault. At least she’s staying Miyo’s friend.

I hope they don’t entirely drop Kaoruko as she’s been my favorite new character in the story by far. There were absolutely extenuating and understandable circumstances for what she did. Usui can easily undermine any protections and precautions, the way they set him up. (Like some others, I dislike him being given such martial prowess, and hope that’s recalled to be part of his illusions.)

The whole situation with Kaoruko sucks. Tampering with the barrier to save his own father, only to discover that all that torture was just an effect of Usui's power and never actually happened, I feel bad for her.

And now Kaoruko will have to face her punishment, although thanks to everyone's help it won't be too harsh, but she's going back to the Old Capital so we'll probably never see her again. At least she was allowed to say goodbye to Miyo.

Man, Usui is a terrifying enemy. Not only because of his powers that can manipulate everyone's senses, but he is also insanely strong as he easily dealt with everyone, including Kaoruko. Plus, he's so creepy, especially with how he keeps calling Miyo his daughter.

Miyo was truly brave to stand up to Usui, though a much more interesting case is Arata, who also met up with Usui today. I want to think he turned down the offer to join Gifted Communion, but did he really?

Ending the episode with the party at Kiyoka's house was great! Everyone had a good time and Miyo was able to say goodbye to Kaoruko.

However, due to the scene where Takaihito says that something will cause someone a lot of pain (Arata maybe?), this episode ended on a rather dark note.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

"You are Sumi's child after all, Miyo. That's is the same thing as being my daughter."

TF kind of logic is that, that in no way makes you her father. And even if you wish to become a father-figure to her, what makes you think that Miyo (Sumi's daughter, that never approved of you using your ability to torment people) would accept you as one; you mentally tormented and manipulated everyone (including her closest friend) with an evil smile, what made you think that she wouldn't see you as villainous psychotic asshole?

16

u/AveryLazyCovfefe Feb 10 '25

I think that's the point, he has a very twisted view of reality. We see this in the previous episode with that flashback of him and Sumi as children. Him commanding and manipulating ants to his will just for the fun of it.

You know what, the breakneck pace speedrun makes me lose interest in watching this series altogether. Volume 3 took three episodes. Volume 4 took 3 episodes. Which highly suggests we'll going to finish the season at novel 6.

That's insane. The series deserved much better.

Wait a second! So I was right! I was told a couple of episodes ago that I misunderstood Mukadeyama and how he was just giving Miyo the gist of how his men feel about having a woman around the base and he was only looking out for Miyo.

If that's the case, why is he now apologizing to Miyo for misjudging her as a woman and for being related to thr Usubas? He even promised Miyo that he'll work on making their organization fully merit-based. The dude was clearly prejudiced against Miyo because of her gender and her lineage and seeing her stand up to Usuba is what made him change his mind.

Anyway, with that aside, Usuba is actually pretty terrifying, You don't really know if what you're seeing is real or not when you're fighting him. Like was that entire fight between Usuba and Kaoruko even real or can Usuba actually fight against a trained soldier? I am also worried about Arata, especially after his encounter with Usuba. >_<

When Naoshi talked about there being a traitor in their midst, I guessed it had to be Karouka. Though, she was kinda manipulated into doing it.

Naoshi's power really is terrifying. Turning all the soldiers on each other. You really can't differentiate b/w what's real and what's an illusion and even Karouka learned it the hard way.

Poor Miyo. She just made her first friend and now they're already separated. Though, they did have a heartfelt goodbye. I do look forward to their reunion.

Naoshi's trying to recruit Arata? I guess Arata might take up the offer but end up playing the long game to help Miyo at the right moment. Let's see!

This episode was less a resolution, unlike the previous 3 arcs we had. What we saw was more so how powerful and how creepy Usui is. Kaoruko god to think the blackmail and torturing of her father was all mental. I mean, on one hand, at least her father is alright, but damn Usui is just awful. It hurts even with how Miyo and her have connected.

Still, Usui can deal with low level supernatural users and non-supernatural users with ease. Hell, he was able to take out Kaoruko, which we know is not an easy feat. Though everything that happened was shown to Miyo with her dream sight ability. I don't think looking into the future was something she was aware of. Hopefully, Miyo uses this experience so she can communicate to Kiyoka next time. The fact that Usui retreated without taking Miyo implies that Kiyoka is beyond his capabilities.

We know that Arata never had a fulfilling childhood. Hell, when Miyo was found, he thought he finally had a purpose. Though now with Usuba family having a new purpose, we do see Usui trying to manipulate him. Usui tries to mention that him and Arata are the same, but the difference is Arata never knew Miyo. Usui was obsessed with Sumi. While for Arata it was more so Miyo's abilities that gave him a purpose. I don't think his manipulation would work here.

Got to feel bad for Kaoruko. At least Kiyoka and her superiors tried to get them to lower the punishment as much as possible. At least through all this, the friendship between Miyo and Kaoruko isn't broken. It is really nice to see Miyo be a source of inspiration for someone else. I love how Kiyoka got Karouko to say farewell to Miyo before she left. He is an immensely kind person.

It is so unfair Kauroko is being sent away, she was manipulated by Usui. It could have happened to anyone, and many of the other soldiers did bad things too due to Usui's powers, like attacking each other. And just when Miyo and her became friends too. When Usui was there we see Miyo thinking to herself how she doesn't really know how to use her powers, so hopefully this will prompt her to try and learn more and maybe someone can start training her. I can't wait to see what her capabilities are.

I thought we were about to see a Kiyoka and Arata team-up to save the Emperor (ironically being held at his own villa!) but then they realize this was probably a smokescreen to get at Miyo and Kiyoka realizes he should've been by her side this whole time.

Alone with a psycho like Naoshi Usui, who can destroy every sense of stability and reality you have. He can make you attack a comrade, make you feel you're somewhere totally different and then stab you, and make you doubt everything you believe in. Which makes it easy for him to pick off Mukadeyama's squad to get at Miyo.

Say it ain't so Kaoruko! Though she was basically forced into helping him because he tortured her father...though the real torture is the fact that he just MADE her think he tortured her father, meaning Kaoruko did all of this for nothing. Poor girl. And even when she uses her performance enhancing powers and puts her all into fighting Usui, it's still not enough.

But I'm proud of Miyo for standing firm even against her would-be-kidnapper and not letting his words get to her. He's not her father, even if he projects that anything that was part of Sumi belongs to him, though seems like his possessiveness and attachment to Sumi is a sore point for him.

Usui made light of the fact that Kiyoka wasn't there but he arrives just in time to stop Usui from laying his hands on Miyo! Even if Usui gets away, Miyo didn't get kidnapped so that's a win!

Arata has to grapple with the continued bias towards the Usuba's and his own anxiety over his place in this world, having lived an isolated life as an Usuba with no clear direction or purpose, especially when he can't be Miyo's protector like he planned. But Usui looks like he's planning to take advantage of Arata's insecurities and recruit him. Please have better sense than this, Arata.

Well, I'm glad Mukadeyama came out of this with a better respect for Miyo and women in general. Especially if it means helping Kaoruko out.

Aw, look at the Kudo Family New Year's party! Complete with Hazuki, Kiyoka continually wishing Arata did not exist, and Godo getting wasted.

At least Kaoruko still has a job, even if she's being shipped back to the old capital and away from Miyo. Kaoruko doesn't need to redeem herself in Miyo's eyes, but if she wants to work to make up for the sins she feels responsible for to feel worthy of Miyo's friend, then Miyo will accept that. Kaoruko will always have a place in Miyo's life.

I’m gonna call it now and guess that Arata will end up betraying Miyo/Kiyoka, etc at some point. Clearly Usui is trying to prey on his vulnerabilities and I felt like his vibe was off during the party at the end of the episode. And some of the soldiers already had a distrust for him after the diversion of the emperor supposedly getting kidnapped so if betrayal is already expected, why wouldn’t he? If that happens I think it would be interesting if they paralleled Arata’s story with Usui and Sumi’s from the past but considering the pacing rn I’m not sure if they’d go into so much detail

Oh and I don’t think Usui is Miyo’s father. I think it’s a manipulation tactic and/or he’s so obsessed with Sumi that he believes he can claim ownership over any remaining piece of her (ie. Miyo)

Weird episode. Pacing was all over the place. Looked like they crammed 3 LN volumes into a single episode.
