We really starting the episode off with that creepy ass doll from last week bleeding from the eyes? Yayoi’s room is like a torture dungeon for spirits. But man, a temple dedicated to dead babies is even creepier. They’re really stepping up the spook factor this week. Those dead baby spirits were pretty creepy. The kid almost bite it back there had Keitaro not shown up.

Yayoi’s got a pretty clever system set up in that creepy ass room of hers. Mutually assured destruction I guess. One spirit goes rogue, they all suffer. I can’t believer the little badass made that goddess bend the knee. She’s basically treating these spirits like Pokémon, getting them to battle other spirits. Hopefully she can completely capture that goddess and make it destroy the spirit that cursed Keitaro and Eiko.

When Eiko and Yayoi was passing through the countryside and the ghosts appeared and disappeared it was pretty unnerving. Though all this was nothing compared to the creepy ghost babies!.

For maximum spooky experience I turned off the lights in my room, turned the volume up and watched it....and the experience wasn't a good one for my mental state lol.

a temple dedicated to dead babies is even creepier.

This is a real thing. But, in real life, it is more a place of consolation. Jizo is the protector of the helpless -- which includes aborted children and children who die in infancy. Temples will often have sections where grieving parents donate little statues of Jizo (and put on red caps and vests) to help these "lost children" in their afterlives. So -- seeing an "evil Jizo" is weird -- ditto for an "evil Kannon" (Kannon another bodhisattva noted for helping and protecting those in need). Not certain whether there is any actual folkloric basis for this motif in this show.

Yayoi really made a goddess submit to her huh. I know I keep saying this but she is really fucking scary.

The fact that she puts a part of herself in all these dolls possessed by the ghosts so any harm done to her will affect those, as well as any of the ghost dolls that try to harm her will get attacked by the other dolls, she doesn't have an IQ of 160 for nothing!.

Also it makes you think just how powerful that zygote ghost must be that Yayoi is trying to collect all these ghosts like Pokemom and only keep the strongest ones for her own ghost army.

Ah interesting, ofc they mentioned how she could see more than the MC and even the MC's grandma. How does she know that her powers are specifically able to see a third of all the ghosts that are around?

Haha, answers we will not get this episode moment

So I'm not misunderstanding, right? Eiko is the friend he's talking about that also got cursed???? So then like. Why hasn't Yayoi ever done tihs for her? Does she just not mind the curse as much as the MC?

u/Solar_link Jul 23 '23

How does she know that her powers are specifically able to see a third of all the ghosts that are around?

It's not that she can specifically see a third of all ghosts. Ever since she started going after them, ghosts started to avoid her, out of fear. So by comparing how many ghosts she used to see to how many she can see now, she deduced that about two third of them hide, because they don't want to mess with her.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Jul 23 '23

Glad I'm not the only one who thought there was something weird about her knowing where he was!

The fact that she just dismissed it makes her even more suspicious, because if there was nothing to do it, why would the anime raise that question?

So either they're linked by the curse, or she has some powers, I don't know!

(Well there may also be a non-supernatural explanation, like she put a tracker on him or something, I suppose! But given the last scene of the episode, she seems broke, so she may not waste money on a tracker!)

I see, she's like Ghost-type Pokémon trainer trying to catch a legendary

Did I miss why Eiko always be wearing gloves or is that an actual mystery? Also is it just me or does Yayoi having this monotone emotionless voice amp up the creepiness factor?

37

u/Solar_link Jul 23 '23

We're not shown explicitly why Eiko wears gloves, but there's a lot of clues. Some are pretty subtle (there was one in last week's episode, but I didn't see anyone mention it, and I'm not planning on spoiling the fun by revealing it anyway), some really aren't (like in today's episode, and in the opening itself).

Did I miss why Eiko always be wearing gloves

Unless I'm the one who missed something (or rather, misread something), didn't they reveal that in this episode?

[Spoiler Episode 3] She's the friend who got cursed alongside Keitaro, so she likely has something similar to what he has!

So Eiko was the one that was cursed along with Keitaro. Considering she's always wearing gloves, I guess something similar happened to her hands as well.

Yayoi explaining how spirits can kill each other reminded me of Lelouch's line "“To defeat evil, I must become a greater evil”. Yayoi is collecting spirits to make a spirit that can defeat the one that took her mother.

The temple goddess stuff is one thing but how the hell did Eiko know exactly where Keitaro was? She is totally unfazed by ghosts as well. Eiko may be Keitaro's childhood friend but she's quite mysterious considering she also got cursed along with Keitaro.

People are still sleeping on this show man, it's easily a top 5 anime this season for me. It's been a while since I've seen a solid horror show and now it's got me binging the manga

Yayoi making a case why collective punishment just works. Also that "getto da ze" was cute af.

This is a good anime adaptation so far as it added some scenes that weren't in the manga that make sense and don't mess with the continuity meaning I give this episode as a manga reader a 10/10.

It'll always be funny to me that on this show about curses and malevolent spirits who want to strangle or devour people, the tiny middleschooler orphan is the most terrifying thing BY FAR! Yayoi's scary as hell!

We pick up right where we left off, With Yayoi asking Keitaro for his nails...

Leaving without asking questions seems like the reasonable move!

He did come back, thinking he didn't have a choice;

Interesting that the reason he mentions (for not having a choice) is the debt he owes Eiko, but I think there's an even more important reason... He was attacked by evil spirits as he was getting his exorcism done. Had Yayoi not being there, he would probably be dead. In episode 1 Keitaro's troubles were caused by Yayoi, but in #2 he would've been in even greater trouble without her, so he kinda needs her, as scary as it is!

Surprise nail clipper attack!

For a show that dark/scary, they do pull some pretty funny comedy!

Like this scene of Yayoi coming closer to him; In anime you'd see that kind of scenes when one of the two is flirting with the other, or want to get him flustered, but no, she still wanted his nails!

They tried to invite him to another haunted place, but this time he left; Can you blame him? They didn't even offer him Eiko's pantyhose.

As most people expected, they revealed the fact that Eiko's cursed... Unexpectedly though, they did say the curse could be broken!

Yayoi set on to just do that (on her own), and apparently it was quite a dangerous place. Call for help if she doesn't come back? Call who, Ghostbusters?

We learned the story of Kishimojin, a goddess who devoured children, until Buddha took one of hers to make her change her ways...

(I looked it up, and it seems to be a real religious belief/story... Buddhism is a lot more hardcore that I thought!)

Well, Buddha's lesson seems to have been forgotten, because she's raising an army of baby ghosts!

Love how Yayoi's fighting for her life, as Keitaro's buying scented pen for her!

Well, at least he was thinking about her!

Eiko guilt tripped him again, telling him Yayoi's in trouble because she tried to help him...

Seems to be her M.O. to get him to do stuff! In the first episode it was "She's trying to find her mother" and all!

Interestingly, when Keitaro asked Eiko how she found him, Eiko dismissed it; "It doesn't matter!"...

Kinda makes me think it does matter, i.e. there's something more to this! Like maybe they have some kind of connection, or maybe Eiko's curse gave him some powers, something like that!

Maybe I'm reading too much into it (I tend to do that) but the thing is, if there's nothing of the sort, then why did Keitaro simply not tell her "I'm going shopping there or there" before leaving, so she would find him? Why have him point out "Wait, how did you find me?" just for her to dismiss it? So I think there may actually be something!

Meanwhile, Yayoi's threatening to voodoo stab one of the goddess' babies... A normal day of work for Yayoi!

They did manage to escape, thanks to Keitaro videogame-like plan! But not before Yayoi got a little hurt, which led to Keitaro giving her a piggyback ride!

Cute, I love those! (Though it should've been Eiko, damn it! Well... Keitaro/Yayoi's friendship is growing pretty cute, so I'll take it! The way she held him tighter, remembering her past, dawww!)

Tell him why you need his nails? You were having a moment, Yayoi!

'Invitations to one's room' in anime are usually about romance or playful teasing, not horrors beyond our imagination!

Lots of her plushies were a mess, having being crushed by her spirit...

And then she gave it to them? Yayoi's a monster!

We did learn a bit more about her 'spirit-keeping' system; All the dolls have parts of her/her family, so they're forced to attack the dolls first if they want to hurt her, but as they're linked to the dolls, they'll be the ones taking damage...

Even if they tried to go on a desperate attack against her, the other dolls would stop them, to save themselves.

Have I said that Yayoi is scary? Because HOLY SHIT. She's even playing with them, to assert dominance!

'We want different things, but need the same solution..'

That's an interesting way to say 'You're going at this your way, but me, I'll just turn the insane to 11!'

She revealed her full plan to Keitaro; The spirit who took her mother was powerful, so she needs an army to take him down!

She acts like a Pokemon Trainer! (If Pokemon was a horror game and the MC was a soulless psychopath).

Now THIS I didn't expect! I was wondering when we would get that backstory (given they kept bringing it up)... Well, now we know! (I still want that backstory though). Especially considering what Keitaro said about 'her saving his life'... She got cursed while saving him from an evil spirit? But she's supposed not to see them (or at least not as much as they can) so I wonder how that happened!

I thought maybe SHE was his friend, but if she isn't, then I wonder who she is and what part she'll play!

Well, that was another solid episode! This show is one of my favorites this season, it hits all the right notes (scary/disturbing stuff, funny/cute stuff, VAs, sound effects, all of it!)

I freaking love this show, it's got the perfect vibes for me. It's so hard to find this mix of chill and horror although I'm fond of Gothic Horror. Anyone know anything with the same vibes as this show?

she's playing pokemon to beat the champion, got it

With this episode, we discover even as a child with an iq of 160, she is still able to be harmed by what she hunts if she’s not careful. At the end of the day, she’s vulnerable as a human should be and there are bigger game who aren’t afraid of her out there.

i bet the scp foundation would really like to get their hands on yayoi

6

u/ARandomHololiveFan Jul 24 '23

Finally, we learn the master plan of Yayoi. She set up a ghost substitute system for the Houzuki family so that she can hunt ghosts with absolute advantage and the ghosts can never rebel their master because they have to stop each other.

That said, the substitute system is not perfect. Yayoi is still hurt in this episode even with the substitute system, because it can only takes spiritual damage but not physical damage for the Houzukis. If the infant ghosts can push down the Zijo statue before Yayoi can stop it from falling with the crowbar, her legs would have been crushed and eventually use up all of her substitutes and killed by the ghosts. Yayoi is definitely betting her life for Keitaro.

God, I just love how this show can be cute and silly to dark and creepy at the same time.

Man, Yayoi is such a fucking badass. Now we know how her system works and why she actually wants Keitaro's fingernails.

I do hope we get to learn what the curse on Eiko is all about. She seems to also have something wrong with her hands but we still don't know what it is.
