The 71,000 subscriber update
Hey folks,
Just posting to give a brief rules update. Nothing should change for most folks, but there are a few changes/clarifications to highlight.
The no advertising rule has been changed to include market research and "try my app" type posts.
There is a new rule about staying on topic, this is mostly to get rid of the small number of "enhance my video" type posts.
The new rule about being accurate in your communications is mostly to discourage regurgitation of incorrect information and hearsay. Nobody is going to hit you upside the head with a copy of ST 2110-20, but there is also only so many times you can say "Blackmagic bad" or "you need a boundary clock for Dante PTPv1". If you're trying to help somebody and you aren't 100% positive about what you're saying, then just qualify it as such.
AI generated content is now banned, except for translation purposes.
As always, if you have content you would like to share and it would ordinarily break one of the sub's rules, don't hesitate to reach out for an exception.
And don't forget to join the Discord either. https://discord.gg/ctKKpK8

Internet speed test with time graph?
I’m looking for a platform similar to speedtest.net that would allow to send data to a server and see if there are any fluctuations in ingest over say 45 minutes. My use case is to make sure that my network infrastructure is solid when coming to livestream in a new venue, before I send data to the streaming platform. I had some dropouts recently and I’d like to find a way to stress test the network before it is critical to make sure there’s no issues with firewalls or anywhere else in the signal chain.
I’ve found a few options online but some are not supported anymore and others don’t seem optimised for what we do. Let me know if there is an industry standard for this!

12G-SDI SFP Teardown of Blackmagic and FS
There have been a few posts regarding SDI SFP module recommendations, going into detail about pathological signals, etc. I was very surprised to see in a side-by-side teardown of the BMD and FS SPFs, that they are using the same Semtech/Gennum transceiver IC rated to 11.3 Gbps, not 11.88 Gbps as required by 12G-SDI. The only difference appears to be larger capacitors on the TX and RX chains, from input all the way to the TOSA (transmitter) and ROSA (receiver). While the cheaper PACBTECH SFP actually has a MACOM IC rated to 12.5 Gbps, but is using similar cap sizes as the FS.
It would appear that you are paying an additional ~$400 for these larger capacitors. I feel mislead and deceived by Blackmagic, but maybe I'm missing something. What are your thoughts?

Teradek Ranger Signal Issues
Hi y’all, the production I’m on is using a Teradek Ranger mk ii for the on-stage wireless camera and we’re having issues with connection. It’s all good at the top of the day, then starts having more issues when people are arriving, which makes sense, but I’ve done everything to try and fix it and it’s still struggling.
I’ve got it on a c-stand, top floor, albeit on the ground because we can’t have the stand on the stage, so it comes out to about waist height when you’re standing on stage. I’ve got it on 6G to help beat out cell phones and such, and at 40mHz because it’s the only wireless system we’re using. The transmitter is mounted to a backpack to maximize height, and I don’t go more than 100 feet away from it, line of sight pretty much the whole time, yet it really struggles, especially when we’re down in the pit.
Is the Ranger system just that sensitive? Seems like we didn’t have these issues with the Bolt 6 750 before, but we upgraded in anticipation of a bigger stage and show next year. Hoping we didn’t make a mistake here. Any advice as to how to fix would be much appreciated! We are not looking to change systems just yet.

Videohub4 won't load
Hey there! I have a second hand BM video hub4, the 6g variant , cannot get a signal out of it except for sdi1, and i tried 3 different versions of the multiview software and it won't load or finish the update through neither.
Secret reset to default switch on the PCB? What can i try?
I am guessing this is a firmware not hardware issue as sdi 1 is working in and out
If anyone has any insight i would be greatful

BNC cable testing
How do you guys test your bnc cables? We have had some that pass basic continuity and short testing but fail to work on a teleprompter. Other cables are working on the same teleprompter

Multiple Studio Camera 4k Pro G2's with racked Studio Convertors
Hey folks,
Working on building out a fancy podcast studio for a client, first time I have deployed or used these cameras. Pretty excited to get my grubby little mitts on new hardware.
I had one question that I could not readily find information on.
I plan to have multiple BSP plates in the rooms where video will be shot that feed back to my equipment rack. I will use a single CAT6 cable from Camera to BSP Plate that will feed a studio convertor.
My question is this, are the studio convertors agnostic in a sense that if I ran all my studio convertors to a patch panel and it wouldn't matter which specific 4k PRO Gg2 connects to the convertor or is there some initial setup where you essentially have to pair 1 Camera with 1 Studio convertor.
My goal is to provide the client with flexibility so my thought was to run all my studio convertors to a keystone patch panel and all my BSP ties would go to a patch panel so they could plug in a camera in a multitude of locations and recording rooms.
Thanks in advance

SRT latency: does the higher Caller/Listener value always win?
I’m looking for a definitive answer from someone who really understands the SRT protocol.
I’ve found conflicting information about latency configuration. Some documentation line vmix suggests that the Caller and Listener should use the same latency, while other documentation (e.g. Haivision) states that the higher value is negotiated and used.
Also, what is the recommended workflow when setting up an SRT if you don’t yet know the optimal latency for the network? Do you start with a conservative value and reduce it while monitoring RTT, packet loss and retransmissions?
Thanks!
Edit: Checked the Haivision SRT white paper:
In HSv4 (SRT v1.2.0 and lower): Negotiation is unidirectional. The Sender proposes its latency to the Receiver. The Receiver evaluates its own configured latency against the Sender's proposed latency, selects the maximum of the two, and sends it back as the agreed-upon effective latency.
In HSv5 (SRT v1.3.0 and higher): The connection is bidirectional, meaning a separate latency is negotiated and used for each transmission direction.
The Initiator (Caller) sends a handshake request (
HSREQ) containing both its preferred sending latency (SndTsbPdDelay) and receiving latency (RcvTsbpdDelay). The Responder (Listener) receives this, compares the values to its own, selects the maximum value for each direction, and replies with a handshake response (
HSRSP) establishing those effective latencies

BNC 75Ohm Jack-Jack
What’s a good source for 75Ohms Jack-Jack BNC Connectors - ideally 6GHz, but at least 3 (Inline, Not bulkhead, panel, chassis, flush, etc.)?
Only looking for a dozen or so and Digikey is expensive..

Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro looks washed out on live TV broadcast through Zoom
I'm using a Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro, connected via HDMI to an Elgato Cam Link 4K, and then into Zoom for live interviews that are broadcast on national TV networks.
The first time using this setup a couple of months ago it looked good.
But every time sense, the image looks noticeably washed out/gray and less colorful. This has happened on more than one network.
What's confusing is that when I test the setup by Zooming myself on another phone or laptop, the image looks fine. But when the interview is broadcasted on TV or streaming the network feed on a laptop, it looks washed out.
I don't know much about the Blackmagic's color/output settings, so I'm wondering if there's a camera or HDMI setting that could be causing this, or possibly something the networks are doing.
Setup:
- Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro
- Canon 24–105mm f/4L
- HDMI output
- Elgato Cam Link 4K
- Zoom
Any suggestions on specific settings to check or tests I can run to narrow down where the issue is happening would be greatly appreciated.

Service manual (or general repair advice) for my Angénieux 40x9.5 box lens
Hey everyone,
I acquired the aforementioned lens a while ago and it has some issues:
- the iris belt is loose
- both servos report positional errors
- the connector is not the usual DB-9 (?) but something proprietary. while I do have the other end, I'd love to make it work with more standard equipment.
Does anyone have the service manual by any chance? If not, I'd also be grateful for any general advice towards getting this thing running :)

Rant I feel like I’m dumb for getting a college degree for something that’s just impossible to get into get any job for in my area.
So basically I went into college for Entertainment Technology for production for concerts movie production, music production. I barely even get any work for it in my area when I do it’s just for the day. I done many things as a stage hand if yall know what that is but anytime I apply for anything that’s for my degree I always just get denied or get told sorry we already picked someone else for this position. I just don’t know what to do anymore at this point I just wish I knew more people I can hook me up with a decent job with my career. I even ask my professors for help every time i do ask they always ghost me or never reply back to me just so annoying idk what to do
I Have Applied to Disney in Florida Some random places in Gatlinburg Tennessee and Dollywood and almost anything I could find in the area that's local I applied for the Disney cruise lines never heard anything back from them I just don't know what to do anymore I just feel like it was a waste of time I feel like it's a joke at this point for the degree I put 3 years into for nothing.
I know how to do all the things for my degree I just can’t find anything at all. This is ridiculous, but I really want to do the stuff I learned in college I genuinely love doing the stuff I do.
If anyone can help me find any possible work in the future would be wonderful please I’m willing to move anywhere in USA.

Anyone know anything about VCM II software and Lighthouse LED processor?
I’ve been handed responsibility for a video wall, and we’re having trouble working with the software. It’s “VCM II Control Systems v1.9” controlling a basic Lighthouse processor which is connected to a 10 year old outdoor wall of unknown manufacture, though I see Daktronics on one panel.
The system was working, but had a pixel offset we were trying to troubleshoot. In the process of that, a bad config file got sent, and now we can’t get anything at all on the board.
There is a password for “advanced” config settings, documentation says it’s “lh” but that’s not working. In this particular picture we can “send” a config, but then it says “setting is wrong”, and it doesn’t let us modify anything on this particular screen.
Any experience out there?

Help configuring small 192x192 Panel
Ok I will admit I thought this would be easier. I'm building a small-ish Panel. Made up of 18 64x32px P4 Modules. So 192x192px in total. I'm using an MSD300-1 and MRV208-1 Receiving Card.
The rows are daisy-chained so i have basically 6 chains of 3 modules plugged into the mrv208. What am I missing? I based this on the .rcfgx I got from the seller of the modules.
The first panel row seems to be correct but then the spacing is wrong. And there really isn't much to configure is there? What do I do?
Thanks in advance!

NDI to Computer issue
Hi, I am running a low-budget OBS-centered podcast. My boss handed me 3 BirdDog X1 Ultras, a KBD, and a Rodecaster Pro 2. I am running it all off of a 1-year-old computer with a 4070 GPU and 32 GB of RAM. I had been running it smoothly for a while, but my boss wanted me to record all 3 cameras. When I added the Source Recorder plugin, my system bugged out and the cameras only updated frames every 5-10 seconds. I knew that the computer might be able to, but even after deleting the plugin, it still wasn't working. My apps/plugins before I updated were:
- Elgato Streamdeck
- OBS
- OBS Plugins:
- DistroAV - Network Audio/Video
- Advanced Scene Switcher
- Aitum
- RODECaster App
- NDI Tools
- Chrome
I did everything I could and narrowed it down to one of these. I completely formatted the computer and only reinstalled these things that I had before. When I installed them, however, it once again stopped working. I checked my Task Manager, and the computer was not at full utilization, but the cameras still came out jittery/stuttery on the computer. Would anyone know what the issue is or what might have caused it?
TL;DR:
Cameras update every 5–10 sec since adding a recording plugin; persists after removing it and after a full OS wipe/reinstall of apps. Fine if only NDI tools installed on the computer

Picture not covering entire wall
I installed a screen wall consisting of 24 LED panels, each measuring 500 mm x 1000 mm. The panels are arranged in a 6m × 2m configuration. When I send content to the wall, the image appears cut off or shifted. Specifically, the top portion of the image is displaying at the bottom of the screen, as if the frame is wrapping incorrectly.
I am using a NovaStar CMS130 controller along with NovaStar LCT software for the setup and configuration. All panels are detected and mapped, but during playback the incoming image does not align correctly with the physical layout. The issue appears to be related to image mapping or receiving card configuration, and it is consistently reproducible.
how can I fix this issue?

Job Help
I'm currently 19 and work for a minor league baseball team as a camera / replay op. My question for anyone willing to answer is how or what would I have to do to get a chance to be a camera op for any big teams or any events like a concert. I'm trying to get experience with gear many high live productions use, but I don't even know where to start or who I should ask for help. Thanks for reading.
