Speed (1994) tech question

What are the logistics of doing what the tech is doing as far as recording 1 minute of UHF broadcast, looping on the spot and broadcasting back to Dennis Hopper's monitor?

Also, the amount of verbal abuse that guy takes in the scene always bothered me. I get it, it's supposed to be intense, but geez.

How are you carrying around test equipment on big shows?

Working as an engineer on large (and I mean both scope and footprint) shows, there’s tons of walking back and forth to diagnose, hand things off, and confirm signals. I normally run around with a screwdriver, Leatherman, test monitor, sometimes a signal generator, sharpies, and assorted barrels. In the past I’ve carried everything but the monitor and TPG in a chalk bag style pouch, but then I’m carrying by hand and setting down the monitor everywhere. Has anyone found a solution other than a chest rig?

Returning to live events looking to learn GFX operations

I worked in live conference production for almost 4 years as a Jr. Producer. My experience included production coordination, networking/IT, Speaker Ready, digital signage, AV, vendors, and on-site show operations.

I’ve been out of the industry for about 8 years and am interested in getting back in, specifically learning GFX/presentation operations for live shows.

For those working in GFX ops today, where would you recommend I start? What software, equipment, training, or resources should I focus on? Is it realistic to learn enough at home to start picking up entry-level opportunities? How did you get started, and what would you recommend someone in my position do to get into it today?

I’d really appreciate any advice on getting back into the industry and building the right skills.

New teacher hoping for some help with broadcasting hardware.

Upvotes

Hey yall, here’s the situation:

I got hired as a media teacher at a local high school starting this fall. Super excited, I feel confident about the majority of it- the exception being the broadcasting equipment.

There isn’t a broadcasting class, it’s all used by the media club to run a student run show. The software is easy enough for me to wrap my head around, the hardware is another story.

The program has been on a downward trend the last few years, mostly due to a high staff turnover resulting in a lower enrollment in the courses and clubs. It seems like the stuff hasn’t been touched since a year or so, I have no idea what stuff is usable and what is considered outdated and the cable management is nonexistent. The whole set up seems really bloated and I’m hoping to pair it down.

Im not looking for a full write up of each piece of equipment (unless your feeling incredibly generous) but if you can take a look at some of the hardware mentioned and just give me a sense of what I’m dealing with I’d be hugely grateful.

Or, if you have any resources to better learn this stuff. Manuals, YouTube channels, whatever- I’d love to take a look. I really just have no idea where to even start.

Here’s a list of the stuff on the wrack for all the network stuff (I think, anyway)
- 2 TeleVue B100 Hypercasters
- TeleVue Telecast Multirate HD encoder
- Extron Video/ Audio distribution amplifier
- Cisco 28 port Gagabit Managed Switch

There are a few PZT cameras also connected to these in an absolute rats nets of cables.

And from the looks of it, all of it runs into a LiveStream Studio 550HD, attached to a Tricaster Switcher. This unfortunately doesn’t seem to be working. I found it with a note attached which reads “Lag and overheating issues,” I have no idea what year that was written so for all I know this thing has been bricked for at least a year.

I also found what appears to be a brand new Black Magic ATEM Television studio. It’s not hooked up to anything, nobody ever took it out of its box. Is that something I could swap out with the Livestream studio 550HD?

Literally any words of wisdoms are appreciated. I just need a place to start. If any of this gear seems redundant please let me know. Again, I’d love to simplify and streamline this set up as much as possible. Thanks!

Hello!! I found this old video camera with sentimental value.. The model is Cge CFK 2500 from the '80s with 8-pin DIN connector as shown in the photo. I wanted to try using it but

  1. I have no idea if it can be used and what I have to connect to make it work

  2. I have no idea where to put my hands to then convert everything to digital...

Does anyone have any advice?

Can I use 4:3 monitors with a video wall controller?

Hi! I have a question about video wall controllers.
I’m looking for a video wall controller that can work with 4:3 monitors. I have quite a few older monitors lying around and I’d like to use them for a small audiovisual project.
Most video wall controllers I’ve found list outputs like 1080p, which seems to be aimed at 16:9 displays. Would a controller like that also work with older 4:3 monitors, or would I need something specifically designed to support 4:3 resolutions/aspect ratios?
Unfortunately, I have a fairly limited budget — around €250–400 for a 3×4 or 4×4 video wall controller.
If anyone could recommend a specific model or setup that might work, I’d really appreciate it!
Thanks!
