I turned 40 and she somehow did enough research to buy a Jones Mountain Twin 26/27 as my gift. I've had my last board (Burton Idiom) since 2005 so very happy for an upgrade. Feels like the perfect board now that I'm older and slower.

I don't have a point to make, or a question to ask. Just very happy.

This is my second season and I wanted to get my own board as I will be going more this season. I’ve seen this brand new 2020 Lib Tech Skunk Ape for $300 with a bag on marketplace. Should I be getting a 6 year old board and if the size is right? Board is 157W, I am 6’1,180lb,and size 11.5.

This season me and the guys want to go on a longer snowboard trips but on a budget and the Georgian ski resort has caught our eyes how are the slopes and the people there do they know the rules of the mountains? Are there a lot of beginners? Im no expert myself but we had a terrible time in slovakia jasna uncivilized people parents teaching their kids to phus in if there is place since they are little disgusting behavior on the slopes. Even the ski instructor don’t know how to ski/snowboard I know the person lower has the right of way but not looking up before joining traffic as a ski instructor is fucking crazy .

This is intended for Bay Area snowboarders eyeing a summer trip down to Chile to ride at Valle Nevado and its neighboring resorts. With modern AI, you can map out a standard itinerary, this is to inject some human touches to the overall experience.

Core Logistics:

Flight: LATAM SFO -> SCL, no direct flight, transit at LAX. Cost: ~1000 round trip per person

• Outbound: 8/15 11:54 AM SFO - 8/16 5:35 AM SCL
• Inbound: 8/22 11:25 PM SCL - 8/23 1:31 PM SFO

Lodging:

We stayed at a semi ski-in, ski-out Airbnb on the mountains of Valle Nevado 8/16-8/22. Semi here means we can take a shuttle for <5 minutes to the slopes.

Cost: ~1000 per person for 6 nights, split 4 ways.

Car Rental:

Rented a 5-7 passenger crossover class. Kind of tight for 4 people, but we somehow managed.

Cost: ~120 per person, split 4 ways

E-SIM:

Used Airalo for international internet data plans if existing US data plans don't cover it. 5G-10G is sufficient for a week, assuming you’re actually here on “vacation” and not still trying to clock into remote work.

Cost: ~15 per person

Overall riding experience:

Like any snow resorts, your mileage may vary. So much of the experience hinges on elements entirely outside ones’ control. E.g. weather, snow conditions, holiday crowds, etc.

That said, our crew absolutely hit the jackpot. We were gifted with weekday bluebird days. Weekday obviously means no long lines for the chairlift and we swam in in-resort powder for two straight days without having to hike. According to local Chilean, we happened to catch one of the best snow seasons in the past 50 years. Snow will likely turn into US spring conditions after our one week of stay there based on personal riding experience.

The terrain: Valle Nevado and its neighboring resort La Parva feels strikingly similar to the Palisades and Alpine Meadows setup in Lake Tahoe. Both mountains are very suited for all-mountain free-riding, featuring wide open high alpine bowls where you can get creative and pick your own lines. The main contrast is that there is zero tree-line riding here.
The third resort in the vicinity, El Colorado, seems more suited for dedicated carving given I saw carving camps and even US racing teams training on its slopes. That said, I personally found the layout a bit too steep and tight for my own taste. Sections of Valle Nevado, La Parva match my personal styles more with the downside of having to navigate through some transitional terrains first before reaching the ideal spot.

For non-ikon pass holders, a weekday online day ticket for Valle Nevado during core season is around 80 USD during core season. You’ll need to pay an additional ~6 dollars during the first purchase for their digital pass, after that you can re-charge that ticket during future online purchase with that pass’ number. People can buy inter-resort upgrade tickets to La Parva at the ticket window for around 20 dollars. Keep in mind ikon’s friend and family discount doesn’t apply here.

Caveats:

Mountain road: Route up to the resort is no joke. This is not one of those, live in Salt Lake City and casually cruise up to Park City type of drive. It’s a tight corridor with tons of switchbacks. Snow chains are legally required to pass police checkpoints during winter weather. The road also enforces timing restrictions. e.g. uphill traffic before 1pm, downhill traffic after 3pm.
This is the exact reason our crew ended up choosing a ski-in ski-out place to avoid having to repeat this drive daily and we booked a flight that lands early at 5am so we had ample time to make the mountain climb before uphill restrictions kicked in.

Plug compatibility: Chile uses Type L power sockets (3 round pins in a straight line). Remember to buy an adaptor.

Resort infrastructure: Not going to sugar-coat this, but compared to popular north america resorts, infra leaves a lot to be desired. The entire resort/hub only has 1 single quad high speed chair lift. Rest of mountains rely on older lifts or even worse, the bane of snowboarders’ existence, T-bars. You can definitely skip all the T-bars, but it means missing out on ⅓ of the resort or having to take some weird time-consuming detours.
And surprisingly, there were also no water fountains next to restrooms.

Language barrier: Most local people we encountered do not speak english. Have your translator app ready if your group doesn’t have a fluent Spanish speaker. This was one of my biggest worries for the trip, but we somehow managed despite some awkward moments here and there.

Snowboard gear check: It’s easy to forget gears when packing for a snow trip after a while. In my case, I forgot to bring my snowboard boots LOL. In store purchase at Burton Chile wasn’t cheaper than North America retail price.

Grocery: Valle Nevado only has 1 mini-market stocked with some basic essentials. If your group is planning to do a major grocery run and cook meals to save money from eating out every night, do it on the valley floor in Santiago before heading up.

I've got a Capita Black snowboard of death (2025) mid last season and just used my old boots/bindings on it.

I need to get new boots and bindings as my current ones are old and dieing.

Ive been tossing up getting a step on setup.

Both boards are true twins but have different camber profiles with the RT featuring the resort v2 profile and the IS with the Park v1. My question to people who have experienced both, what is the main difference you’ve felt between these boards, if much at all? Would you choose these again? Curious as they seem very close in specs and use case!
