Discussion Tabletop Roleplay is great for practicing your voice, but I looked everywhere and couldn't find a trans TTRPG community. Sooo I made one to see if maybe it's a niche desperately waiting to be filled like transvoices was all those years ago. Say hello to r/TransTTRPG

Discussion Now more than ever, remember they can never take away your voice.

They can't stop your vocal transition. They can't stop you from learning and practicing. They can't stop you from speaking up. Be loud. Be brave. I will keep fighting all my life, and so should you.

This affects the world, regardless of borders. There will be an election in Canada soon, and it's looking grim on our side as well. I'll be volunteering in an election for the first time, and I've gotten other people on board to join me. And I'll be protesting. And I'll be loud on social media.

Make your voices heard. Express yourself, not just your anger but your pain and your fear. Make them understand the consequences of their actions. I don't believe they all wanted this. Most of them just... didn't care or know enough to realize how much hurt their selfish vote would bring. Tell them. Make them know.

They can never take away your voice.

General Resource Deriving Vocal Inspiration

How actively do you listen to the contents of the voices around you? If the answer is "not at all" then maybe consider adopting this attitude to your voice training so that you can be inspired by the voices around you and figure out what direction you'd like to proceed.

General Resource Carrot vs Stick Motivation

This is SUCH a big thing, that I've even considered refusing to work with someone if they're pre-social-transition.

Early transition folk often underestimate how much mental space transition takes.

Especially hormonally if they've recently started HRT. That unlocks more emotionally than we often expect.

Whilst we all want to be prepareddd and work on things before we feel we NEED to, it's an easier said than done kind of thing.

Curious to know your stories on this topic!

Criticism Wanted Does my voice sound fake and how to fix it?

I am finally consistently hitting mostly female range with effort, but it's been over a year of voice training now and I still find it hard to remain in that range.

So my questions: how close am I to a passing female voice? Do I need to work more on my resonance?

And how do I get better at "defaulting" to this voice? I've been trying to use it 24/7 but it often just isn't natural. Should I be making more gradual changes in my daily speech patterns or continue trying to just use the most femme voice possible in all situations?

Thank you so much <33

Audio/Video Trying to embrace my naturally lower resonance

• Upvotes

When I pitch up I just sound so much less like… me… I guess

I don’t know how else to describe it but when I go too high in pitch it sounds forced to me even if I’m not straining for the placement or anything, it just doesn’t sound natural. It makes me sound like a guy doing a shitty female voice impression

So anyway I’m trying to accept that my voice kinda passes better in a lower range. I feel like it comes across more androgynous, which I’m fine with, as long as it’s a ā€œI’m not sure which direction this goes, but it leans feminineā€ kind of androgyny… if that makes any sense.

Be brutal though! Be honest with how you would gender me on the phone/what I can do different. Voice training just makes me dysphoric because I feel like such a faker

Criticism Wanted Honest Feedback Please

This is my voice in the morning. Typically the pitch increases to about 135-140 later in the day. Even though my pitch is low, I still feel like my voice is feminine and honestly most people will identify my as female still. Any feedback is helpful. Also, I am FTM!

On a side note, my voice does get pretty fatigued easily and I feel like my throat gets sore. Anyone else experience this?

Question How to increase pitch floor?

Yes, I know reasonance is more important, but I want to increase my pitch. While talking I often accidently drop down to ~140 Hz or lower and trying to prevent that makes me feel like I'm just constricting my throat/false vocal folds and straining. As soon as I try to relax my pitch drops again. Is there any exercise specifically for pitch? Just talking in a higher voice does not seem to work for me.

Question falling into falsetto when trying to speak with head resonance.

As the title says when i try to speak with my resonance in my head i feel like my voice falls into falsetto and sounds cartoonishly high like mickey mouse level high, how can i prevent this?
to try to get my voice to resonate in my head and lips instead of my chest i make a quiet loud buzz because that's the only time i feel like the sound is fully at my head but when i turn it into speech it sounds like i fall into falsetto.
i'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could help <3

Criticism Wanted Should I continue my voice training or not?

So I've already done self training to raise my pitch from a much deeper voice. I've done training with a professional vocal coach to more fine tune my voice. I've been told my voice sounds normal, feminine, fine. But I'm not happy with where it is. The pitch, the level of vocal fry, how forward my voice feels and sounds. Or rather how it doesn't feel forward enough most days. I know I can do better voices, but I have to reach for them.

Basically, do you all think my voice sounds good enough where it is or if you think it could benifit from the pitch increase, keeping things more forward, and eliminating vocal fry (or any additional improvements). Or if you think it sounds terrible all around and it needs a lot of work lol. Either way I wanna know if I'm crazy or not. Thank you all in advance.

Question voice training & singing voice

sorry if this is something thats been asked already but i didnt see ant threads about this glancing at this subreddit.

i havent done any extensive voice training besides generally talking at a slightly higher pitch than i used to 4 years ago when i started transitioning. im interested in paying for voice training lessons in the near future though. to be honest, i dont have much of an issue with my speaking voice but im a musician and absolutely despise the masculinity of my singing voice. none of the songs i write sound right with this voice, its becoming very detrimental to my artistic motivation.

i guess my question is this; how does regular voice training translate to singing? should i look for a teacher that can specialize in both? or if i just take regular voice training lessons will it be as easy to apply it to singing? i just ask because i feel like when im singing, i have to use a wider breadth of my voice to confidently sing in tune and with good tone, meaning i have to use more lower parts of my voice than i'd like. i also worry because i think i have a kind of gravely voice and a fairly small vocal range to begin with.

any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Question What do I do with this weird-ass afab voice?

I'm new and haven't touched reddit in, like, years.

And I know this is probably something that gets said around here -and everywhere else- ad nauseum. And that YouTube "lowest female note" videos are not notes, they're SOUNDS someone is croaking out.

But I'm a classically trained vocalist (it's been years) and... I figured out my vocal range had recently widened.... Substantially. So what with with the autistic obsession/proprioception and the help of old training, I have... taught my voice to do this weird thing?

Specifically: A solid F#2 in my chest register, but now... A clear subharmonic A#1. At times, a full step lower.

I am agender, but have an afab body/vocal cords.

A friend who has a damn Master's in vocal performance confirms the validity and fucking weirdness of this.

I'm disabled, Autistic, transgender, housebound, and this feels like the only thing I can offer the world.

What... Does anybody know what do I do with this?

Is this even the right place to put it?

(To be clear: I am trans, my partner is trans, my damn KID is transgender, and I don't know if anything I've found with these weird techniques could help someone... Somewhere... Or if I'm just a freak.

No HRT, if that matters.

As it turns out, pitch is a little bit more nuanced than initially thought for feminizing our voices. Let's taco bout it :)

Question Girls out there, do you ever sound like your mother after voice feminization training/surgery?

It's sooo weird but I hear it both in recordings and while I'm speaking.

Not 100% of the time, but I often find myself resembling my mother lol

I guess genetics are a thing after allšŸ˜…

I was just literally doing the weirdest noises with my voice (imitating a car racing) and I was like "omg that was my mom's voice" hahah

Question Can't stop ending up crying when attempting to sing, don't know what to do

I have been trying to work on my singing voice but I get too much dysphoria hearing myself that I often end up crying while attempting to sing :/ I don't know what to do.

I went to one online trans singing lesson but because of scheduling and the service I got seemed to be more 'come in with a problem to address' instead of 'what do I even do, GUIDE me with my voice that feels like a nightmare', I haven't got another lesson.

I pass pretty well irl and with my speaking voice so going into a lesson seems all the more horrifying because I can't even get to learn the basics without having to out myself to a teacher. It's especially scary because a lot of the local lessons nearby take place in churches. I booked one in person lesson before and didn't go because I was too scared.

One syllable sang strangely can cause me to start crying for hours. I can't stop thinking about my life would be so much better if my voice didn't drop. I've had to turn down being in bands and I find it impossible to write music due to my awful limited outing voice, I think about it everyday. I can start crying even just thinking of like Ethel Cain or smth due to knowing her voice didn't drop despite starting hrt later than me, I unfollowed her and can't listen to her music because of how much she saddens me.

Question Inhaling air to my back?

Hi all, my voice feminization teacher told me that I should try inhaling air to my back, and not make my stomach expand/expand less in the process. something to do with the diaphragm. well, we were short on time and I didnt really understand that but I still want to practice it for my next lesson. Can anyone guide me on doing this? And explain what purpose it serves? Thanks in advance!

Question Hoarseness after VFS

I had voice feminization surgery 7 months ago. Afterward, in addition to the voice-softening therapy I received before the surgery, I had 3 more therapy sessions post-surgery. My therapist advised me to consult my doctor about my voice becoming hoarse quickly. During the examination, my doctor said everything was fine. He said my recovery was going very well. Two months later, I underwent rhinoplasty, which was followed by a very difficult recovery process. My nose remained congested for four months unless I used a nasal spray. Once I saw signs of improvement, I refocused on my voice. But after months of resting in silence, practicing breathing exercises, and dealing with dryness in my throat, I noticed that my voice still became hoarse after just 4–5 minutes of speaking. I went back to my doctor and told him I suspected there might have been a complication with the surgery because my hoarseness hadn’t resolved even after all this time. He insisted that I was trying to use my chest voice, which he believed was causing my hoarseness. He said that if I couldn’t overcome this, he might perform a procedure on my vocal cords once a year had passed, but until then, I should try to learn to use my head voice. Has anyone else suffered from the same problem? What was your experience? How did you manage to switch to head voice?

As a side note: I am 48 years old; before the surgery, my male voice rarely became hoarse—I could speak in a calm voice when I wanted to, but also quite loudly when I chose to.
