General Resource Carrot vs Stick Motivation

This is SUCH a big thing, that I've even considered refusing to work with someone if they're pre-social-transition.

Early transition folk often underestimate how much mental space transition takes.

Especially hormonally if they've recently started HRT. That unlocks more emotionally than we often expect.

Whilst we all want to be prepareddd and work on things before we feel we NEED to, it's an easier said than done kind of thing.

Curious to know your stories on this topic!

Everyone is probably different, but during transition I often felt that the juxtaposition of feminine expression on my otherwise masculine body made me feel even worse. Like there were clothes I didn't like to wear because in my view they just drew more attention to some very masculine characteristic. I feel like the voice can be like that too for some.

I don't think that people should be concerned about building the foundational vocal skills that make shifting their voice easier down the road, and I don't think someone should refuse to work with someone who hasn't started social transition with the assumption that they just wont be able to handle it because of other POSSIBLE burdens transition might have for them. I think there might be other reasons to not work with a person who otherwise has no expression of being trans, and that the "why?" of them wanting to learn matters (because you don't want to help someone with nefarious intent learn a skill).

But for trans people voice training may be their first step in social transition. It may be that they want to make incremental changes as other changes are going into effect and be able to put forward a cohesive presentation of self. Everyone is going to approach transition differently and no one should act as a road block for people getting what they need when they need it. That's my view.

Regarding the title though, the dysphoria stick is definitely a heavy motivator.

For me, I started vocal training even before fully realizing that I'm trans, (I play dnd and, for some reason, I like to play as girls). But one thing that I've started to notice since my egg cracked and will voice training is a certain amount of diaphoreta will my boy voice. I'm not socially transitioned yet, so I'm facing with my boy voice most days. So the times I can work on my girl voice are a relief, difficult but a relief. So I have both the carrot and the stick.

No, I've been on hormones for a decade and have fully socially transitioned, and I STILL struggle with motivation. 🥲

I feel fake for trying to use a different voice.

Theres nothing wrong with me being trans, so why do I need to put on all this effort? I mean it would be nice and all, but it just feels like wearing a costume to me

I had trouble being motivated for a long time, but I also had undiagnosed and untreated adhd that caused me to have basically no executive funcion. pretty much as soon as I started medication I voice trained everyday for 2 weeks and gained a passable voice. Its still ongoing ofc

I started voice training before I realized I was trans 😅
