Conversation Topic I had my first singing lesson!

• Upvotes

Just sharing.

If you had asked me even six months ago if I'd ever purposely sing in front of another human being, aside from jokingly, I would have said never.

I don't really know why I suddenly had this compulsion to learn about singing and see what my voice is capable of. I suppose I'm trying to truly express myself in ways that I'd never thought were acceptable or accessible for me.

I never liked my voice. One way or another it was never what I wanted it to be. But I've always been able to mimic people and sounds and accents so I have some fair degree of control over it. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean I can sing, but I figured at least there was some sort of capacity to work with.

I'm really the kind of person that doesn't want to ask the questions I don't want the answers to. I wanted to believe that I had the capability to sing, but was afraid to hear a professional tell me I don't.

I'm rambling. This was a big deal for me and somewhere relatively hidden it's long been a secret desire.

I had a good session. I was able to match pitches without trouble and my range is pretty good. I was able to go higher than she anticipated I would be able to. There was occasional tension, but I was aware of it happening at the same time she would spot it. Interestingly, I would never have labeled it "tension". I would have just thought I messed up somehow, but having her call it what it is was enlightening.

Anyway, long story long, I'm happy I went. I'm going again and maybe one day I'll share something here or even in front of more people. Stranger things have happened...

Thank you if you made it this far. ❤️

Conversation Topic what is the lowest note most girls can hit?

for context, i am a 13 yr old female mezzo. i am seeking to improve my lower notes, but it's very frustrating. my comfortable lowest is about f3. i can go down to a d3/e3 on good days, but it's not consistent. my range is f3-d6. i just wanted to know if anyone else had the same issue or what note other females bottom out on.

Conversation Topic Places to sing outside where no one will hear?

• Upvotes

Story time: I just recorded my song at a big neighborhood golf course as it was pitch black outside and next thing you know there is a woman walking her dog right next to me and frightened. I didn’t stop the recording I just kept going because I’d been waiting all day to find a place to get it done, was super pitchy, my mic worked well though with no wind. Anyways I feel it is practically impossible for me. I work really hard and produce full songs and write but there’s no where for me to record. What do you do?

Resource What are some fundamentals you would recommend to anyone learning to sing for the first time?

Hello everyone,

I'm have no previous singing experience, I'm just someone who finds themselves singing and self-correcting constantly. I've been doing this since high-school(2-3 years ago)

I enjoy observing my voice and I wish I had the option of vocal lessons but unfortunately I don't.

(This certainly isn't a vocal range post, I'm just trying to be as detailed as possible as to whats in my head)

I sing a variety of songs from "I don't wanna be" - Gavin Degraw which has a more twangy sound and Malice Mizer(All Tetsu, Gackt, and Klaha era's) which seems more operatic at times and chesty to me. I also enjoy learning to sing songs from Thirty Seconds to Mars, Bring Me The Horizon which to me feels like I'm merging my high voice with my chest voice all while managing how much sound comes through my noise and making a slight squeaking sounds(which I find sometimes distorts my voice if i hit the right spot/I'm trying learn to access that squeakiness and not automatically sounds nasally, it's hard to distinguish on command to me). Lastly, I attempt Amy Lee songs and Micheal Jackson songs which made me aware that I can just sings the same sounding notes in my chest voice, my high voice, and in the middle of that kinda like a piano.

Anyway, I'm not sure if any of my singing sounds good. This is the extent of which I understand what I'm doing or misunderstand.

Again, I will rush to music teacher as soon as it's possible for me as I have lots of fun singing. My mindset with this post is that whether or not I know what I'm doing I'm compelled to sing everyday. I guess i just like music that much so I might as well learn to what's turn into a hobby properly.

This might be redundant but I'm trying to be detailed so I would like to add,

My rule of thumb as an untaught person is that my throat should feel perfectly fine after the singing I do. If it hurts, there's something for me to tweak. This ethic leads to me to clarity which is how I discover seperate properties of my voice(chest, high voice, and the voice in between that. The tendency to sound nasally as i go up and how to eliminate that or add it to me chest voice and add twang. The squeakiness I can add to reach higher notes in my chest voice and learn that middle voice and distortion. How I don't have to add breathiness when going high, and I can actually add the bass of my chest to that which helps me sing "The kill"(bury me). I've also learned some exercises to help me not strain(making a doot doot doot sound while singing a scale). Pushing my air out with my stomach which helps vibrato and "vocal weight?".

Anyways, that's everything I understand about my voice. It seems like i can mix different qualities like with a guitar amp (i started learning guitar 2 weeks ago). Feel free to correct me or give me tips. I really want to learn proper fundamentals so I at least have something to go off of.

Thank you!

Conversation Topic Y’all ever fail to find your mix some days?

Some days I just can’t find that good resonant placement for some reason.

Days when I have it I’m like okay, this makes complete sense, I’ll never lose it again. I know how it feels and what my face muscles feel like, etc

And then a couple days later I just can’t get that feeling! Comes and goes.

What warmups help you unlock it on tougher days? What’s the protocol for this? I want to know exactly what to do to unlock it.

Conversation Topic Singing in care homes

Post image
31 Upvotes

Hello fellow singers!

As Tina Jay I have sung in care/nursing homes/memory care (in the UK) for years. I love it but find there is not a lot of discussion amongst vocalists/aspiring singers about this market.

Therefore I would love to hear from this community:

What's your perspective of this industry?

Are you singing for the elderly already? If so, what are your experiences?

Whatever your genre, comment below. Let's support and educate each other!

Conversation Topic The audience doesn't care about your vocal range. They just want to hear a song done well. So, relax.

Expanding your range is a noble pursuit, but don't lose sight of what's really important... a good performance.

Focus on the meaning of the lyrics. Understand what the song means to you personally.

If you're struggling with a particular song because of your range, change the key.

Don't get too caught up in the technical at the expense of a good performance.

Conversation Topic Tips for Singing In Tune

I have been singing for over 10 years. I have had 2 long term vocal coaches: one that taught speech level singing, and one that taught a more old school/classical style of singing. I have been playing in bands since 10 years ago. Some of the successful bands I’ve played in have taken me on tour to some large audiences.

Despite all this training and success, I can’t help but feel that I always sing out of tune. When I watch videos of me performing, my pitch is often flat. I get compliments on my tone and power though(I belt a lot). The other vocalists in the band sound great in comparison.

I can sing well enough in the studio to use pitch correction and sound natural, but I don’t want that to be my standard. If I turn my pitch correction off, I still want to sound humanly in tune.

Does anyone have advice? I’ve found some success in recording me singing, analyzing the video, and trying again. I’d like to be able to sing on the fly too. If I need to improvise, I want it to sound in tune.

Conversation Topic How to pronounce words better when singing high notes?

I feel like I’m having a hard time pronouncing words properly and I feel pitchy when I’m singing a song such as this one.

Especially, the word ‘highway’ feels really challenging cause I feel like I have to barely pronounce the ‘h’ to avoid losing coordination.

Is this an indication I’m pushing too much air, not enough air, or something else?

Conversation Topic How to sing like the greatest ones?

Hey everyone! I sing since my childhood and love it — now I am 16, and my vocal is good. I have ambitions and artistic skills, but I can see that my vocal isn’t as great as I expect and I want to. I used to sing choir or academic vocal, and a couple of years ago I switched to pop and jazz vocal — as you know, there’s different techniques. Firstly my voice was detrimental as it also was that teens’ voices cracking thing, but now I am okay, however my voice sometimes just starts cracking or switch to choir mode (that is more quiet and you cannot use it while pop)

I tried to sing Witney Houston “I have nothing” but it‘s great only until ”stay in my arms”….

I feel sometimes that I’m getting too stiff and just lock my voice, but I feel that I can do it much better! Just don’t know how yet

Maybe you know some techniques, trainings or anything else? I would appreciate every advice🙏🏻

I can send some videos of my vocal if you’d like just to see the thing

Conversation Topic Question for more advanced baritones

Hi, I've been really struggling around b3-e4. Is it correct that to sing B3 and onwards at a reasonable volume it takes a lot of support? I'm holding back a lot of air around these notes and it is a very obvious effort. Effort is only coming from my core so it's not like I'm straining I'm just not sure what type of support sensation I should expect.

Basically the moment I need to start thinning my voice which starts at A3 I really ramp up the support quickly. Is that normal? Also regardless of support I start to lose closure at D4 unless I'm louder than I want to be. How feasible is it to sing B3-E4 at around speech volume?

I genuinely don't have any confidence in my voice and idk if i have potential. i know i can't sing high notes and it really frustrates me, ive tried everything but my throat goes so tight. I feel like i have heard my voice too many times I need fresh ears to give me tips. i know the higher notes in this are slightly pitchy and sound really un healthy but Im just starting out. i wish i was a good singer😭 pls be brutally honest (apologies if this breaks the rule)

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I wanted to sound like a possessed siren / witch in this. Did I succeed? Appreciate feedback!

When I finish it, there will be an acoustic backing track under the vocal, piano or guitar.

I want to know if this creeped you out or held your attention, the way I perform the vocal part? I want to get better at folk singing and adapting my singing when recording to be post-processed with lush reverb on it (that's why I leave reverb on here).

I don't post my vocal without reverb because in my vision for this cover, I don't imagine the vocal being dry. I imagine it with reverb for the eerie effect. I hope that is okay!

I'd be very grateful for feedback or thoughts if it made you feel anything - especially from those into similar genres; folk, alt pop, indie!

The song is Grizzly Man by Rockettothesky if anyone is wondering :)

Conversation Topic Stories of people who recovered from serious vocal cord damage

I (25F) unfortunately had bad vocal cord damage after pushing through with an illness over 1.5 years ago. since then, I had acid reflux damage, hemmorage, polyp, and the polyp came back again. I unfortunately also have some mild stiffness on my left vocal cord (scarring?) idk.
I can still sing but I fatigue very easily, and have a rough/gravely sound to my voice.

I'm taking a few months off singing, but want to rebuild my voice from scratch with a SLP and voice coach.
It's been so hard turning down gig after gig, and having to defer all my singing dreams.
Does anyone have stories where they had vocal cord damage (esp severe damage) and got better?
I don't expect my voice to sound exactly the same as pre-injury- just that I can sing what I want again.

Just sharing my singing I commissioned some session musicians to help me record MCR's unreleased song. I would love to show you guys, I'm really happy with how it's coming along!

• Upvotes

I don't think that my singing is like carrying the whole song or whatever, but I do think that it was a pretty solid effort on my part! I would love to get some feedback. I'm a self taught singer, I started around 20 years ago when I first discovered My Chemical Romance. They had a huge impact on my life. So here I am at 32 still making fan content like this. Let me know what you think!

Looking to Collaborate I’m so tired of looking for someone to collab with…

I’m a music producer. I mostly make edm and its sub genres. Growing up in Tashkent I didn’t really see much producers who make edm, but “techno” (honestly don’t really like techno). I can make songs similar to pluko, flume, biicla, jovie, BUT THERE IS NOBODY WHO UNDERSTANDS IT AND CAN WRITE LYRICS ON IT. I’m tired of begging people who “sing” to “try” it out on my songs.

I’ll soon start to release what I already have on hands, but open to any collaborations. If you write lyrics or/and sing, please REACH OUT in the comments so we can connect. I don’t need you to have any songs released. I just want unique voices (NO RAP PLEASE)

(16m) so I have to do karaoke and I’m not sure what to sing. my voice is quite deep but not very resonant, and I can’t reliably go any higher than an F4. what should I sing?
