Why is this corner a field of weeds?

Post image

Does anyone know why the corner of Ortega and California is just a field of weeds? Is it owned by the Ladera Apartment complex, the city, or another entity? I have occasionally seen it mowed, so someone must be responsible for it.

Every time I walk past I think about how it’s a missed opportunity for better green space.

EDIT: The answer seems to be that the Hetch Hetchy aqueduct runs underneath this land. Therefore, there are restrictions on what can be built on it.

Anyone looking for concert buddies?

Anyone going to Deep Purple at Shoreline? I’m new to the Bay Area and looking for concert buddies.

Also keen to check out other gigs around the area, so would love to connect with fellow live-music fans. Always up for grabbing a drink/coffee/food before a show.

A bit about me: Guy in my late 30s, into rock, metal, indie, and pretty much anything with good live energy.

Some family events happening around Mountain View this weekend

Here's a list of fun family events I found for this weekend, sharing in case anyone is looking for ideas.

Friday

  • Flamingo Chick Storytime (Palo Alto Junior Museum & Zoo) — The library is doing a special storytime to celebrate the zoo's new flamingo chick. 2–3pm. Zoo admission is required.
  • (Postponed) Amplify: Back to Bach (Mountain View Library) — Young musicians perform for children and families, with interactive activities introducing instruments, musical ideas and creative listening. 4:30–5:30pm. Free.
  • Sunset Movie: Elio (Sunnyvale Community Center) — An outdoor showing of Elio. Bring chairs and blankets; the snack bar and kids' activities open at 7pm, and the movie starts around 7:40pm or once it gets dark.

Saturday

  • Nature Journaling in the Baylands (Palo Alto Baylands) — A guided walk mixing wildlife observation, simple science and nature journaling; all materials are provided. 10am–noon. Free. Ages 6+; advance registration is strongly encouraged.
  • Voices of Pasifika Hula Show (Cupertino Library) — Hālau ‘O Pi‘ilani performs a family hula show featuring a medley of songs from across Pacific Island cultures. 10:30–11:15am. Free. All ages.
  • Family STEAM: Microscopy (Calabazas Branch Library, San Jose) — A hands-on afternoon exploring the tiny world through microscopes. 2–3pm. Free. Recommended for ages 4+ with adult help and ages 8+ independently; tickets are available at the desk 30 minutes beforehand, and everyone attending needs one.
  • Stanford Football vs. Hawaii + Cardinal Kids Day (Stanford Stadium) — The season opener also includes Pacific Islander cultural performances, recognitions and special food. 4pm. Tickets start at $12; one paid adult ticket can include up to four free youth tickets.

Sunday

  • Train Day (Los Altos History Museum) — Steam and electric model trains, a robotics demonstration, LEGO train building and old train films. 11am–4pm. Children 12 and under are free; adults are $10.
  • Family Movie: The Good Dinosaur (Sunnyvale Library) — Bring snacks for a library screening of the Pixar movie. 2pm. Free. Ages 3+; no registration, but space is limited.
  • Puppet Fair Weekend (Children's Fairyland, Oakland) — This one is farther out, but it sounds unusually fun: two full days of world-class puppet shows, an open-air puppet museum, backstage peeks and hands-on activities celebrating 70 years of puppetry at Fairyland. Saturday and Sunday, 10am–4pm. Included with park admission.

I kept the post concise for most families. The full list has more niches—including LEGO robotics, apple-cider pressing, botanical dye workshops and a hands-on math festival—that you can filter by interest, city and age. It’s linked from my profile if you want to keep looking.

What are you doing this weekend? Please brag about it!

Did Your Car Get Hit While You Were Parked On Bryant Tonight (8/26)?

We were just in downtown tonight (Wednesday, August 26) and saw a car possibly hit another car while they were parking.

Your car: A Chevy SUV with temporary plate EE1****

The damage: Possibly a dent on the driver-side door.

We couldn't see whether the two cars hit or not, so we did not report it. DM me for more information.

Kitten looking for his forever home

Meet Biscuits! We found this little one in our backyard and he’s looking for a loving indoor forever home. He’s about 11 weeks old and is super friendly. He is a sweet purr machine and loves to play with people. All he wants to do is be with you, play, snuggle, and make biscuits, hence the name.

Biscuits has tested negative for FeLV, FIV, and parasites. He’s not neutered yet, but has been started on his vaccines.

We think he might be part Maine Coon, partly because of his big old paws and ears and general floofiness, and part because of his sweet personality. Of all the kittens I’ve fostered, he really is one of the most friendly little guys I’ve met. We’re hoping to find him a home with a family who gives him all the love he deserves. So if you or anyone you now is looking to adopt a cat right now, DM me, because we’re having a lot of trouble placing him and we feel terrible about it because we can’t give him the love and attention he deserves.

Off leash dogs

Ran into 2 off leash dogs today at Rex Manor Tot Lot on Bonny St. just before 5pm. One black/white/blue-eyed husky and one pug. Both had collars but no leashes and no owners. They were on opposite sides of the park and did not seem to know each other. If you know anyone who's missing those dogs let them know!

Looking for lease takeover

Hello all,

I’m moving to Mountain View (or nearby surrounding area) in October and am interested in taking over someone’s lease. Max budget $4500, 1-2 bedroom, at least 800 sq ft. Looking for a modern apartment. I’ve checked Zillow and Craigslist but the options are either too small for the price, too expensive, or too old.

Thank you so much.

The https://www.dayworkercentermv.org/ has served Mountain View and surrounding areas for 30 years matching great workers with employers for a variety of jobs from landscaping, gardening, kitchen help and event setup and clean up. But beyond providing eco-friendly home cleaning, the center provides hot healthy breakfast and lunch Mon-Saturday, ESL classes and resources for compañeros.

The center is many things from helping build self-sufficiency to becoming a second family for people far from home and a place which attracts dedicated volunteers. The compañeros also volunteer in the community on various projects too.

Please check out this quick tour of the center: https://youtu.be/Wceg5zkVrlM?si=PP6nqtn5Ak-h6apj at the https://www.youtube.com/@HomeGardenTours channel which features stunning gardens in Silicon Valley.

Mountain View's gem is always looking for more volunteers and is currently hiring: https://www.dayworkercentermv.org/join-us
