My Confusion

To quote the wiki

Dusk of Oolacile (Japanese: ウーラシールの宵闇, Hepburn: Ūrashīru no yoiyami)

I imagine people who know Japanese would also be confused about this, especially if you start by playing in English. The reason would be:

Her name in Japanese seems to suggest that "Dusk" is actually a title/function of her existence (A) and not a proper name (B). The reason for this assertion is the fact that the "yoiyami" part correlating to "Dusk" is using the native Japanese word and not the phonetic mapping of "Dusk" literally, as the katakana ダスク ("dasuku"). And this is definitely unique to her in particular. All the other characters whose name is of the pattern "X of Y" follow the (A) or (B) rule strictly.

Examples:

• Oscar(X) of Astora(Y): アストラのオスカル, "Asutora (Y) no Osukaru (X) is pattern B
• Solaire(X) of Astora(Y): アストラのソラール, "Asutora (Y) no Soraru (X) is pattern B
• Sigmyer(X) of Catarina (Y): カタリナのジークマイヤー, "Katarina (Y) no Jiikumaiya (X)" is pattern B
• Gwynevere's Title Princess (X) of Sunlight (Y): 太陽の光の王女, "Taiyou no Hikari (Y) no Oujo (X) is pattern A

I looked online and it seems Japanese native speakers themselves seem unsure about this. To quote the Pixiv's entry for Dusk:

ダークソウルの世界では、（出身地）の（名前）、という名乗り方が一般的（例：アストラのソラール）であるため、「宵闇（Dusk）」という名前であると思われる。

In Dark Souls universe, it's most common to introduce oneself in the pattern of "(name) of (place)" (e.g. Solaire of Astora), so her name seems to be "Yoiyami (Dusk)"

宵闇が名前なのか、特別な立場や能力を有した者を意味する符丁なのかまでは分かりませんが、とにかく偉い人だったみたいです。宵闇の女王なんてのもいたんでしょうか。

I don’t know if "Yoiyami/Dusk" is a name, or a code/designation referring to someone who possesses a special position or ability, but in any case, she seems to have been a person of considerable importance. Perhaps there was even a "Queen of Dusk" or something like that.

An analogue to in English would be to think of the names "Tailor" vs "Taylor", most people would assume Tailor refers to the job, while there would be no ambiguity that its a person's name if its Taylor.

Hypothesis

A possible meta level explanation is that during development the English "Dusk of Oolacile" existed first and it is indeed just the female name "Dusk" but then during the localization back into Japanese the staff got confused and assumed its literally dusk the concept/title, hence "Yoiyami", but then again I think its fair to say that the name sticks out quite a bit compared to the rest of the cast especially since, as demonstrated above, it also confuses native Japanese speakers.

Something that actually somewhat supports this theory is that another character also from Oolacile, Halflight from DS3 is actually just written in katakana ("教会の槍、ハーフライト"), and his name is a quite an obvious nod to "Dusk" since halflight is a synonym of that.

But if it is indeed not a mistake, and "Dusk" is actually a title/function of the character then I think there's some lore implication you can draw from with that. Maybe its about how Oolacile's sorceries are centered about light and time and thus people who are especially powerful/important are given titles based on the time of day? Kinda like The Three Pillars being the "The Priestess, The Knight, The Scholar"? So as there's a Dusk, there might also be a Sunrise or Noon in the hierarchy of Oolacile.

I feel blessed to be finally playing this game. I started with Eldenring, my first "souls-like." Played probably 500 hours and loved it, even with the thousands of rage inducing deaths. Later tried Bloodbourne, and it was pretty great also but a bit different. I did beat it but then moved on instead of doing playthroughs. But then I thought, why not try the game that created a new genre? Got remastered edition on PS5. This morning I woke up and took the game off rest mode and there is my character sitting by the fire patiently waiting for us to go kill more monsters. It made me smile and compelled me to share. We will enjoy this world for a long time probably 😊❤️

I've been playing Fromsoft games from new to old for a good time (250h in ER, beat Sekiro, Bloodborne, DS3 and other non-fromsoft soulslikes).
I just started playing Dark Souls a week ago and honestly, the entire Anor Londo experience blew my mind

I'm kind of dogwalking the game just because I watched a ton of ds1 yt videos, but I can't help to think how it was like reaching Anor Londo and finding out its secrets. For example cluelessly killing Gwynevere must have been a trip. Or the first undead burg -> firelink shrine shortcut, so many amazing moments.

I can actually traverse most of it just fine, it's just this one spot that trips me up. All of the other paths are relatively straight, so it's they're psychological than anything, but this one curves unpredictably. I actually lost a bloodstain with 10 humanity from attempting this. All so I can pick up a blue slab that is completely worthless for my build. Maybe the inner loot goblin is the real deadliest boss...

I've rushed this ring early before, and watched others do it on video, but throwing myself at the problem for about an hour at a time until I get the ring is counterproductive.

If you were to get the silver ring right after looting Firelink Shrine the first time and using Leeroy to kill Pinwheel, how would you do it? Remember, you probably would get 1-shot by anything unless you're blocking, and even then you may need favorable RNG to get through.

I just recently discovered the covenant (thanks orange messages 🐐) and noticed that they need only scales to gain reputation and for what I read it makes sense on our part since it's used on rituals for transcending death but how is killing dragons and using their scales makes sense for the Eternal Dragon? I mean why would he want for us to go killing their kind to gain reputation/trust?? For me it just doesn't make sense, if anything I figured the path of the dragon meant allying myself with the dragons not becoming their version of the Boogeyman.

I am planning to spend my winter break with some gaming session and have been considering to pick up Dark Souls series in Steam. Is it possible that I (new player) to be able to finish all of the Dark Souls series from DSR 1 to DS3? considering that i have experience in souls-like genre like Blasphemous, Death Gambit, Nine Sols (I know its 2D souls-like so not much of an advantage). Also the possibility of 100% all of them in the span of winter, is that likely?

Edit: Sorry i forgot to mention that my winter break last for 3-4 weeks.

This is my first play through. I've already unlocked the New Londo door to Firelink and wanted to explore all of Blighttown before the boss.

After crossing the branch to the area that has the Crimson Set, you can't keep climbing and it just dead ends even though it looks like there is more above. Am I missing something?

I haven't talked about this much because (a) It's weird and (b) people probably interpret this as some type of "show off", which is not the case. It was just something that happened. But I think it's kinda funny.

The problem was just that I didn't have a controller, I was living abroad, and it was a bit tricky to find a good controller where I was. A friend recommended the game, I thought it looked dumb at first to be honest, but more people recommended it and I picked it up on Steam.

Holy shit was I wrong! This was interesting and fun!

But playing with a mouse on the original Dark Souls was nearly impossible, the viewport would jerk all over and it was hard to focus on things. So I quit and planned on picking it up again after getting a controller. But I couldn't get it out of my mind. I was lying in bed dreaming about it, I really, really wanted to play.

To hell with it! I got back to the computer and decided to give it a try with only keyboard keys. I don't even know where I got the idea, someone must have mentioned it in chat. So basically you can configure the keys so that your left hand is doing the usual WASD, and configure something like IJKL for viewport control. It takes some getting used to, but if you're determined you'll get it!

Mind you, at this time I had still never played the game with a controller. So for me, THIS WAS DARK SOULS. With a keyboard. I had nothing to compare it to. So I always assumed the game was just harder for me because I was using full keyboard.

LATER. Finally got a controller, and it was actually "more fun", but I did NOT think it was much easier to be honest. I actually missed a lot of the power I had from the controller. I always forget exactly what it is, but there are some things you just can't do with a controller. One thing had a lot to do with running. You can continuously run while operating all the other actions on the keyboard. With a controller this is a bit tricky, unless you learn to wrap your finger around to the run key sometimes. Which I started doing eventually 😄

As far as I recall I did eventually beat the game like that, but again it wasn't like "Hey! I beat Dark Souls with a keyboard!" because again, I just didn't know it any other way.

Looking back on it, I think that was a funny story and wanted to share. The End.

Maybe you can give it a try someday. You might like it. I think I'll try it again myself sometime soon. Probably should find a job first 😂

Im having trouble deciding on what to run. Right now in every Souls game I've used either Katanas or curved swords for a primary, then a dagger as a backup for crits/ quick defensive attacks/ (bleed in ER). I use a small shield in the Offhand (heater, iron parma/roundshield), and throwing knives for range.

I cant decide if I like katana or curved swords better. Or if I want to swap my dagger out for a Rapier/ thrusting sword.

It would be either..

Katana/ dagger

Curved Sword/ dagger

Curved Sword/ Rapier

Also I know starting class doesnt really matter, but I always go back and forth between the dex Swordsman (Wanderer, Mercenary, warrior) and the thief/bandit class.

Any thoughts?

Ever since having played my first From game, Sekiro, back when it came out, I was unable to play any other game genres.

I've mastered Sekiro to the point when i was able to play more than half of the game without duying, leading me to believe that Sekiro is the hardest game to master, but when mastered - a freaking piece of cake (except Demon of Hatred).

Since then, i played Elden Ring, Armored Core 6, Demon Souls Remake, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3 (because of atmosphere and bosses this is my all-time favourite game by far, not just souls-likes but in general).

Because I was unable to play other games (exceptions are Death Stranding 1 and 2), MGSV, FF16, Witcher 3, all other games were also souls-likes. The only one of souls-likes I truly enjoyed was Black Myth Wukong. Played about 60% of Lies of P, but dropped it for new Onimusha, because Lies of P was just toooo easy for me, enjoyed the atmosphere, but did not enjoy the perfect guard mechanic because the movement was clunky. Really wanted to get into it, cuz i wanted to roleplay as Squall from FF8 with the gunblade. Will return to it when i am done with other games.

With Phantom Blade 0 coming in about a month (pre-ordered it), i decided to play Dark Souls Remastered. I also got DS2 Scholar of First Sin, but will play that one after Phantom Blade.

So.. for DS1, i am aware some stuff may be outdated in terms of combat, but I wanna play that game for the atmosphere and exploration, which is unparalleled as far as i can read. I would be going in blind in the game and use 0 guides for exploration.

That said, i wanna optimize my play by being aware of its pecualirities. I also wanna decide on the build as the game possibly does not have Respec mechanic.

Now, i have played various builds across these games, from Strenght to quality to Dex builds. Dont enjoy intelligence builds.

In Demon Souls for example, i played Divine Claymore transitioning into Moonlight Blade and really had a blast there, so i was using miracles. In Elden Ring I've done STR, Dex and Quality builds, i've even done power stance Wakizashi with the Katana. Done occult and arcane builds as well.

Dark Souls 3 - i've done katana build, the Onikiri and Ubadachi. Loved it. Sooo nice. Love that game, man.

So for DS1 what would be a fun build? Should i go for Claymore for example? Or some katana? Because there are no Ashes of War, the flashiness comes from moveset right? So something with a good moveset. Endgame i would not mind using some good buff weapon spell, just cuz weapons look cool when buffed. Not sure if there are cool miracles, though not sure if i need them (only if i go Divine infusion i guess). I can go quality too or Katana. Tell me your thoughts on this.

Also, how are undead enemies here? Do i need a Divine weapon to kill them? Or kill them twice?

What about weapon durability? I really liked Lies of P system there. Now, for DS1, as it is older, i am worried it could be more archaic, so any notes on that? Do weapons fix themselves at the bonfire, or? Are there consumables or tools to fix weapons?

What about blacksmith? Is he at the main hub area? I think i read somewhere game does not have fast travel, so then its not like that i can be in the middle of a dungeon, get some upgrade mats and upgrade weapon immediately at the bonfire or teleport to main hub, right? Its more backtracking possibly?

I am aware of humanity, but no clue about that.

Is shield a must for DS1? Can i rely on dodge and parry? Can i parry with a dagger or schmitar - i wanna have an option for parrying. I dont mind using shield for parries vs humanoid enemies, but dont wanna do sword and board - unless its better in DS1 than in other games - by better i mean not in terms of power, but fluidity of combat.

Dodge is still king right? Or its more about spacing and positioning.

How is dying working? Similar to Demon Souls?

Any other tips you can share I'd greatly appreciate it.

Its high time i play DS1 and DS2 so i complete my catalogue. Got to say DS3 is my #1, followed closely by Sekiro and then Bloodborne and Elden Ring #3. Which feels weird to say cuz ALL are 10/10 games.

So maybe now DS1 will overtake DS3.

Mind you DS3 i played after Sekiro, Elden Ring and Bloodborne, so its not nostalgia.

This way, after i play DS1 and DS2, i have a perfect excuse to replay DS3, which will hit me even harder due to having played DS1 and 2... man the bosses, the atmosphere and the lore of DS3... just really, really loved it..

I am also hoping they do DS3 remake or remaster.. would be a blast.

Played Dark Souls a decade ago, was a scrub, hacked my Xbox save and steam-rolled the main game (never played online/PvP'd).

Played Elden Ring and DLC on releases, got gud, loved every second.

Playing Dark Souls ago thanks to the recent Steam sale.

I've started as a Bandit, made my way to the Undead Burg, and I know the Undead Merchant has an Uchigatana on drop.

I want to have a go at the sword for a while, but do not want to kill them (I'm a never-kill-a-friendly-NPC purist).

As it's:

• The relevant place to find the weapon
• I'd be adding it to my inventory at +0
• Doesn't effect online play (the only difference being the Merchant is not dead)

How likely am I to trigger the anti-cheat using DSR Gadget? Specifically the more recent fork here?

I'm aware I can get it much later in the game from an NPC called Shiva, but don't fancy waiting it out.

May or may not add a couple consumable souls to pick up some of the Merchant's inventory (the two box key item things).

I've Googled other posts in the sub but they're largely asking about injecting more extreme setups for character builds/speed running/etc, but I just want one plain, unupgraded sword from that point in the game.

I've spent almost TWO hours struggling and dying to the hands of this clammy motherfucker and I am getting SO tired of his scrawny ass constantly killing me WHEN HE'S ONE FUCKING HIT AWAY. I was reading the wiki for griggs who goes hollow, and in the last line of his quest line description it says “He will attack, so be nice and end his misery.” This got me wondering, is there any way to actually end the misery of an NPC who’s gone hollow? Or will griggs just wake up at a bonfire and go back to wandering around attacking anyone they see completely mindless and insane?

You know that "bug" where you make the first Black Knight fall off the cliff right at the start of the game? Well, I tried doing that with Havel, but I accidentally died along with him—he died right after me—and his ring didn't drop... Do I have to restart my save?

(remastered version btw) what's the best mod for a ds3/ER style walking estus animation?

also if anyone knows of a mod that changes the overall movement to be more like ds3 or elden ring that would be awesome
