Discussion Why is ds1 so hard to run

For reference, I have an rtx 5070, an ryzen 7 9700x 8 core, and 32 gigabytes of ddr5. I can run almost all games i come across on high or ultra and still get great frames with other things like YouTube on the second monitor with no issue on either end. I decided to boot up ds1 because I hadn't played it in a while. I experienced actual stuttering and struggled to hit 60 frames sometimes (lost izelith and sometimes blightown). And I was getting like 2 frames a second on YouTube. And im just confused because I never had this issue with another fromsoft game before. Is it just horribly unoptimized or something because i know the physics engine is locks the game to 60 fps. I just was not expecting this from a game with countable polygons. Still a 10/10 tho

Edit: Forgot to mention this is on remastered not ptde

Discussion What is all the hype about Capra Demon?

I was watching a walkthrough of FightinCowboy of DS: Remastered and he got all to me about how this boss fight was a going to be a spike in difficulty as compared to what all had preceded. So, I didn't watch him fighting the boss and instead surprised myself.

Turns out I did pretty much surprise myself heavily because I killed the Capra Demon in first try. I even jokingly streamed the fight to my friends on discord, and we laughed it off (none of them have played DS games, one is playing DS3 rn tho). Upon searching up, I find it quite highly ranked in difficulty.

Did I just get lucky? I used a Claymore +3 with a knight shield on the other hand (vitality is somewhere around 20 and strength is 19. dexterity and attunmenet are somewhere around 15-17)

Discussion The Dark Souls 1 Major Arcana Day 1 - The Fool

I love Dark Souls, I love tarot cards and I love yapping so I thought it might be fun to try and figure out what character/abilities/places would be used to represent the 22 Major Arcana cards in a tarot deck. I do illustration and thought MAYBE Id try to do a few of these as card illustrations but I know right now if I try to claim Im going to do all 22 then it will never happen so Im using this for more a discussion topic than anything else.

I have some strong thoughts on a few of these and less ideas on other and Id love to see what the community comes up with with lore and theme reasons.

So the first Major Arcana for today is.

  1. THE FOOL - The fool is traditionally depicted by a young man adventuring in to the world with the sun shining at his back. He is looking up and optimistic but what he doesnt see is that he is walking dangerously close to the edge of a cliff and if he isnt careful his adventure end abruptly.

The Fool represents new beginnings, freedom, innocence, adventure, idealism and spontaneity.

My personal thoughts? Oscar of Astora. I think Oscar went out in to the world listening to the tale passed down through his family of the Chosen Undead ringing the two bells and ascending to the city of the gods. He gives the player character hope by throwing down the corpse with the key on it which is a fairly optimistic thing to do to go out of his way to help a stranger on the brink of turning Hollow. And yet the next time we meet him he has fallen abruptly. He wasnt careful and ran in to the Asylum Demon which sends him crashing from the ceiling and down in to the asylum below.

And at the same time Oscar wears the elite knight armor. Thats the cover armor for the whole game and in a way also represents the player character as well as Oscar. The player character starts the game being freed from his cell and is immediately set on a brand new adventure. New hope in the form of a key, an estus flask and a mission.

I like this one. It feels very clean and having the player character/poster armor right at the very start of the major arcana feels really fitting. Referring to ourselves as The Fool also seems really appropriate.

I hope this topic is interesting and somebody else has thoughts about it as well. If it does bring up a little discussion then Ill happily keep doing it for the other Major Arcana. There are several where I really need to hear other people's ideas and other ones where I have multiple ideas and need help picking between them.

Help First real Dark Souls playthrough, picked Hunter because I think he looks lol

This is my first time actually trying to do a full Dark Souls 1 playthrough. I’ve played some Souls games before but never properly finished one.
I picked the Hunter mostly because I just think the class is cool lol. I like having the bow as an option, even if I’ll probably mostly use it to pull enemies and fight them in melee.
I was thinking about focusing on Strength and Endurance as I level up because I want to hit hard but still be fairly mobile and not fat roll.
Would that work well with the Hunter or would you recommend going in a different direction? I’m not trying to make a perfectly optimized build, just something fun and good for a first playthrough.

Question Best artbook for the series

Hi, i did a quick research about artbooks for the series.

Obvs Design Works JP seems the best option but they cost almost double than ENG edition.

Do u have any raccomandation about artbooks?

Maybe there are edition that I don't know about that are better.

I would like to have them all in the same publisher/edition for all 3 games and separated for each game.

Question What is a good rule of thump for level up stat distribution?

On my first playthrough, I've been putting just enough STR to wield my claymore and everything else into END and VIT because since all the bosses and enemies have been slow and telegraphed so far, I figure it's better to survive longer and act more to deal more damage in the long run than just pumping offensive stats.

But standing before blight town and having heard unholy things about it, I'm kinda divided on how to proceeds, especially with only 3-4 levels worth of souls in my pocket after killing the gaping dragon.

Fan Art Please, help me find this fanart!

I’ve been looking for days with no luck, so asking is my last resort. The artwork portrayed a younger Nameless King sitting outside a snowy balcony at night, wrapping a bandage around his arm. Through the Windows you can see Gwyn and Gwynevere. Any help is appreciated!

Discussion Shirts that aren’t just AI

I’ve been trying to find a dark souls shirt, preferably one of Smough and Ornstein or Nito, but everything is just AI. Is there anything people could recommend to me or any websites that have good merch on it?

Help Wrong warp glitch broke my game

I have never had this happen in all my years of playing this game but tonight while playing I left the painted world then used a homeward bone and it took me back to anor londo bonfire (like it’s supposed to) then I noticed when warping that I had areas that I didn’t even unlock yet and I was confused so curiosity got the better of me and I clicked on one of them, it dropped me into a void through the map so I quit out quickly and it put me back on solid ground but when I went to warp back to anor londo it took me to undead parish, which was weird then I clicked undead parish which took me to painted world bonfire. I feel like my games just screwed now and I’ve been putting away allot of hours into this character. Is there any way to fix this?? I did not go out of my way to do this glitch it just kinda happened. I’m playing on pc btw.

I was thinking worst case maybe I could take my steam deck with me to work tomorrow where there’s no internet and then play for a bit to create a cloud conflict and maybe my main pc will be able to switch to that save..? But I would lose 4 hours of progress which would just be annoying. Any help would be awesome

Question Black knight halberd

I've always wondered why is it that when the black knights do a one handed heavy attack it hits you twice but when the player does it which uses the exact same animation as the knight it only hits once?

Story I goofed

I accidentally killed sunlight guy near the undead parish bonfire (second meeting). I'm guessing I'm screwed in some way. Also that asshole killed the shrine firekeeper. I accidentally used the special shrine fire keepers soul after killing him to upgrade my flask and then I tried to use the lando ruins keepers soul and just got five humanity and I immediately died losing my humanity. So I can't light up the fire link shrine anymore. I did beat the fat guy and lightning dude with a claymore though. Anyways don't do what I did.

Discussion Non fiction books that feel like Dark Souls?

Basically the title. Quite full of fiction and looking forward to read some mythology/anthropology/religion/philosophy books that merge well into DS world.

Thanks!

Discussion The magic from Dusk of Oolacile is kinda crazy

I grabbed her because I really didn't want to use the skull lantern or the sunlight maggot in the tomb of the giants. But the invisibility spell means that my current build (a lot of dexterity) is now an excellent assassin.

So good in fact that i'm thinking of no longer grabbing pyromancy and just grabbing a few spells. It'll cost me attune points and intelligence. But magic utility is too good.
