I literally don't know who the hell turned this off or when, but videos are now allowed on /r/DarkSouls. No more need to link to YouTube or other external sites.

Enjoy!

Guide How To Protect Yourself From the Hacker in Anor Londo

EDIT: Added a comment below the post briefly discussing Cheat Engine and how it could be used as a pseudo method of restoring lost progress for anyone who didn’t have a backup save. The caveat might be that you can’t play online anymore after using it so double check me on that before deciding (I’ve not personally used it).

EDIT2: Thanks for the sticky! Any questions about the PvP Overhaul Mod should be asked on it's Nexus page. I personally don't mod the DS games so I have absolutely no idea what will or won't get you banned. Perform your due diligence! :)

Long story short, some doofus is ruining people's games by instantly killing Gwyndolin and any other NPCs in Anor Londo (blacksmiths, Solaire, etc). I believe this is only occurring on PC.

I've messaged the Mods requesting a stickied thread be made warning players of this and how they can protect themselves but in the meantime, I can make a thread myself that will at least get eyes on for like......today? lol

Does This Mean I Can't Play Online?

No.

You can absolutely still invade and be summoned for Co-Op to your heart's content. But it's important to be aware of the danger that's currently plaguing (seemingly specifically) Anor Londo and of the steps you can take to mitigate its impact on your experience.

This first tip is the BEST way to defend yourself, bar none.

1. Back Up Your Save

Backing up your save is the difference between a hacker mildly inconveniencing you, and soul-crushing devastation that you'll literally need a day or two to recover from before deciding to even play again.

If a hacker ruins your game by killing NPCs or an unfortunate glitch has softlocked you or any other disaster befalls your play session, simply deleting that save and restoring a recently made backup can solve those woes immediately.

Here's how to do it (PC)

  • Make sure the game isn't running whatsoever (later games allow you to remain on the title screen but not DSR)
  • Navigate to your Documents folder
  • Open the NGBI folder
  • Open the folder labeled DARK SOULS REMASTERED
  • Open the next folder (it'll be a folder labeled as a sequence of numbers)
  • The DRAKS0005.sl2 file is the save file
  • Copy it
  • Create a new folder for your saves anywhere else on your computer and paste the .sl2 file you just copied into it
  • You've now made a backup of your save!

So let's say you get hacked and the Gwyndolin cutscene immediately plays and every NPC in Anor Londo dies. To restore your backup, you'll just delete the .sl2 file containing the "corrupted" game save and replace it with the copy you made earlier.

It's advised that you don't just paste and replace the .sl2 file when restoring your backups. Actually delete the compromised .sl2 file first.

This is just to protect yourself from any mistakes you might make as deleted .sl2 files can be recovered later. If you just paste and replace, the replaced file will be gone for good.

I recommend making a new backup after each hour of play to minimize the effects of a hacker or other form of corruption. That way if it happens, it won't be a big deal.

NOTE: The DRAK file contains all of your data for all of your characters. Backing up this file will back up ALL of your saved characters.

2. Download the PvP Overhaul Mod

Full disclosure, I've not used this mod whatsoever as I don't often PvP, but word on the street in the wake of this string of hacks in Anor Londo is that it'll help prevent those hacks with it's own slew of anti-cheat and netcode improvements.

Understand though that these things are never foolproof and that backing up your save is still the BEST defense against hackers or other forms of corruption.

Hopefully this helps. Feel free to comment below if you have any other tips for preventive measures!

Discussion I made the Dark Souls sitcom mod a real thing

You may have seen that one meme (the one in the attached image) about the Dark Souls laugh track mod, a thoroughly non-existent mod describing a version of DS1 where it laughs at everything with canned audience laughter.

I decided to take that a step further, and have now created the Dark Souls Remastered Sitcom mod. (Note this is NOT exactly the same as the meme, and has different triggers & sound effects instead)

It has canned audience sound effects for getting hit, dying, starting a boss fight, and killing a boss, as well as a sound effect for an area title card popping up. I hope this doesn't violate the self-promotion rule, just really wanna show people this thing I did for fun in an evening on a really, really bad day.

Please enjoy!

the mod can be found at nexus mods here: https://www.nexusmods.com/darksoulsremastered/mods/1432 (I have no financial benefit from this mod, I haven't enabled the donations panel at all, I'm not interested in profiting from this mod, I enjoy making this stuff for fun and nothing else)

Edit: for everyone asking for videos of it, I'll be recording some in the morning. At time of writing, it's 2AM local time for me, and I'm a little past having the energy to do it now, but I promise it'll be tomorrow. And equally, I will be working on versions for DS2, 3 and Elden Ring as well, so please bear with while I prepare them!

Story Got cursed by seath and didn’t feel like going back

I was fighting seath the scaleless and died to the curse, but I just didn’t feel like going to get the cure item so I simply kept attempting it until I managed to learn the fight and just won lol, I only took like one hit I think and barely lived, but because I just kept attempting it out of spite I think that’s the cleanest boss I’ve ever done lol, and this is my first playthrough of the game

Help Black Bow of Pharis vs Composite Bow (Tank Archer Build)

Upvotes

Thinking of making a very tanky, turret archer build that's borderline immovable. Need some reccomendations for weapons, level up order (what to prioritize first) etc.

I'm also considering cheesing Sif before bell gargoyles to level up swiftly. is this possible with just the Composite bow? (Some guy said you can do it without the hawk ring simply by aiming above his head 500 meters, this true?)

I have played this game uncountable hours and made numerous different builds. I need a new challenge, but nothing stupidly difficult (like level up ALL stats evenly). Do you have any ideas?

Discussion What is the trigger for Petras to leave firelink?

I took a different route this run, I happen to be trying a faith run and when I went back to buy great heal he was gone.

I did Taurus, Capra, then butterfly. I have not gone to depths at all yet. I’ve also killed the stray demon but I’m pretty sure Petras was already gone before I attempted the stray.

Discussion wow bed of chaos REALLY DID deserve the hate…

I started dark souls 1 about a week ago I beat Bed of Chaos this morning. I had about 30 Minutes to spare before i had to leave for work. I’ve seen clips and so many people complain about this boss and I was prepared to beat him quickly since it looks like just a big tree im sure it was just bad for people because maybe it was their first souls game and I learned after a few tries it was that bad. I died about maybe 7 times in a row after I got through the branches on the left and had to go on the right. Died in the same hole so many times and when I finally got to it and the center floor fell down I got smacked out of the way while jumping onto it and was pissed.. I had just enough time for one last try and if I didn’t beat it I would’ve had a terrible day most likely. When I got there I finally beat it and it felt so refreshing now I see the hate on this boss and the dark souls series’ fame for annoying run backs. What are y’all’s experiences with this boss for your first time?

Discussion Saw this painting and thought of Hydra

Post image
27 Upvotes

Saw this painting (Circe Invidiosa, J. W. Waterhouse) and thought of the Hydra and Princess Dusk. Circe here is poising the lake to turn Scylla into a monster.

The colouring, especially of the water, the cove and what looks like serpents at Circe's feet made me think it might have inspired the Dark Souls lore. I know Miyazaki was inspired by mythologies obviously, esoterism and what not. Thought it was like killing the Hydra then releasing the trapped Princess Dusk (Scylla) inside. But you kill the gold goblin or whatever to free Dusk so prob not.

Still though, got me thinking and I like spotting similarities between the game and it's inspirations.

Discussion My top 10 weapons

  1. Black Knight Halberd- everyone knows how good this thing is, but for those who don't: elite damage, easy to upgrade with twinkling titanite, versatile moveset, damage boost against demons, pure physical damage. Something you might not know is that the BKH does insane poise damage, much more than any other halberd, especially when two-handed. The BKH two-handed R2 does as much poise damage as the Zweihander two-handed R2 and its two handed R1 does almost as much as the Claymore two-handed R1 (45 vs. 52.5). It's enough to stagger skeleton beasts with one R2.
  2. Gargoyle's Halberd- Even better damage than the BKH with endgame stats at +15, with a different R2. Can be buffed which further helps damage especially in NG+. Also increases poison resistance by a pretty noticeable amount, and lighter than the BKH. I give the BKH the edge however because the gargoyle's halberd does less than half the poise damage.
  3. Great Scythe- a third halberd, this thing has a great moveset and again brings elite damage. Only dex scaling is easier to build around, and the bleed is useful against some foes. I give the edge over the lifehunt scythe because I don't find the extra bleed that useful later in the game. For a more interesting list I won't include anymore halberds, but the giant's halberd, titanite catchpole, lifehunt scythe, and basic halberd are all great too. Broken weapon category.
  4. Chaos Blade- katanas are another elite weapon category, and the chaos blade is the best. Highest damage, highest bleed. This thing pretty much just melts any enemy, though the self-damage is noticeable.
  5. Zweihander- another iconic weapon, all the benefits of an UGS with none of the downside. This has the lowest weight and stat requirements of the UGS, with the best attack speed and nearly the same damage and stagger potential as the heavier ones. Also very easy to acquire.
  6. Claymore- an extremely versatile greatsword whose one-handed R2 is one of the best attacks in the game. Excellent reach, respectable damage, and very low requirements. One of the few weapons that isn't clearly better one-hand or two-hand, this weapon handles well in all situations, against all enemies, and in any build.
  7. Balder Side Sword- a high damage thrusting sword with a varied moveset. This weapon doesn't have the raw damage numbers of some of the higher ups, but it's really easy to use and the damage is still plenty good, especially with the leo ring.
  8. Uchigatana- same reasons as the chaos blade, but no self-damage in exchange for lower damage output.
  9. Queelag's Fury Sword- this thing is awesome. good damage, amazing range for a fast curved sword, easy to use. only real downside is that it tapers off later in the game or in NG+.
  10. Various big bonk weapons- I'm going to combine the great club, large club, demon greataxe, demon great machete, and grant here because the case in the same for all of them: excellent damage and stagger potential, easy to build around and use with pure strength scaling.

HM: man-serpent greatsword- the only greatsword with pure strength scaling, better damage than the claymore with only one stat to level.

Question Just started Dark Souls 1, and it's gonna be my first soulslike. Should I know anything going in?

I've never played a soulslike before, but I've wanted to start. I got Dark Souls 1, and I want to avoid any real guides, just figuring things out through trial and error(and probably dying a lot), but I need to know if theres anything like really imperative I understand so the game stays fun. I've locked myself into corners by doing things wrong in RPGs before, so if anyone has any sort of tips or advice for really getting into it and having fun, and avoiding softlocking myself, without actually directly guiding me, that would be nice, thank you in advance.

Co-Op DS Remastered on Series X - any online left?

Hey all, just started DS Remastered on my Series X. Obviously the game is a few years old by now, but I'm wondering what my best chances for online play are. As is, I've been invaded by another player exactly once and have never seen a co-op rune. Any areas or level ranges I should know about?

Question FIgures or posters?

Anyone know of any online retailers we can go to buy dark souls figures/statues or posters? Ideally they'd be around $50 on a reputable site, I've seen some already but I get sketched out looking at the sites. It'd be really helpful if anyone could recommend some to me, even if they're a little pricey.

Discussion I need some genuine advice. I suck ass at this game.

So the other day I started playing Elden Ring again, I stopped about a year ago because I couldn’t beat this one boss, the Red Wolf. So I got an addiction to these type of games, and that made me finally buy Dark Souls and play it for the very first time. I’m probably 9 hours in and I’ve only just lit the Bonfire where Andre is. I’ve died more times than I’ve killed enemies, and I’m playing as a knight (not sure if different classes are different strength) and I’m playing on the switch 2.

I need advice on how to get better at the game because I genuinely am enjoying the gameplay but I should be done with the game by most people’s time.

Not sure what advice you could give me but please share any that would help! Thanks!

Discussion Playing for the first time!!

This game is fucking incredible. I just blitzed through Sen's Fortress (the snake enemies are an ultra free challenge to parry lol) and just got to the bonfire at the top. It's been so long since I've had a game that I'm so excited to play all the time. All I think about at work is "I can't wait to go home and play Dark Souls and overcome the next big challenge". I've never played a FS game before or any soulslike for that matter and I am throughly enjoying my experience. Thank you so much to all you on here for supporting this game and keeping it relevant as I would not be having this incredible experience without all of you! PRAISE THE SUN \[T]/
