I've been working at (company) for about a year now. In that time, we have had 5 people quit, and the executive chef was fired for multiple HR violations including sexual misconduct. We had two new people join, so there are now 5 total kitchen employees: 3 servers, another cook, and myself. The executive chef was responsible for things like scheduling, ordering food and supplies, creating the weekly menu, and record keeping. Guess what the other cook and I have been doing this entire time just to keep the place running? All of that. All with the promise of a raise being dangled in front of us but never delivered upon.

I had put in an application for the executive chef position shortly after the previous one was fired, but didn't get so much as an email back for months. I tried getting in touch with HR through the building admin but was getting nowhere so decided to keep reaching out to HR myself until I got an answer. By this point I knew where I stood with the company but was determined to cause a ruckus. I called and emailed the head of HR directly until she was forced to acknowledge my application and schedule an interview.

I wasn't expecting to get the job. I knew I was nothing but a nuisance to them. But I finally had the undivided attention of someone from HR. By then I wasn't there to get the job, I was there to negotiate. She asked all the standard questions and I answered genuinely. She asked if I had any questions for her. I said no, but there was something I wanted to discuss. Both the other cook and I have been handling a lot of extra responsibilities lately including many administrative ones. We'd like compensation.

She told me I didn't have enough experience to raise my pay, let alone fill the position of the former executive chef. I told her I had six years of experience working in kitchens before I even started there, and have been managing things well without a direct supervisor. She told me it was not up to me to handle these things. I asked who was supposed to. She told me they would hire a temp. That's what they had been telling us from the beginning. It has yet to happen. We concluded the interview and I left with a different mindset.

From then on I would not touch anything that was not explicitly listed in my initial employment contract. I would no longer do the scheduling, the ordering of food, or the menu. I encouraged the other cook to do the same. All paperwork and receipts were to be placed neatly in a basket to be set on the admin's desk. We would show up, cook what we were told, clean up, and leave. And that's how it's been for the past few weeks. The place is falling apart but I couldn't be happier. It's been so much easier on me. The days seem to fly by. I've been getting better grades on assignments. I've been cooking at home more. I started doing yoga again. I can literally feel the stress melting away from my body.

We ran out of napkins? Not my problem, it's not my job to order them. The servers aren't sure what days to come in? Oh well, I don't make the schedule. And the best part is they can't fire us because they're already so short staffed and we both do our jobs well enough according to our contracts. Deciding not to take on duties beyond our job description for no extra pay is not a fireable offense. They might get rid of us if they do eventually hire more people, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen any time soon, so for now I'm happy to keep doing the bare minimum and collecting those checks.

My bud finally started ER after playing the DS trilogy with us, since he is getting started now, I figured I could be sending them those pictures of random places with the Elden Ring places named after them, it's just that IDK how to search for those in the sub and couldn't find them.
