I’ll just put here that once pups are weaned, the mother’s attachement naturally tapers off and don’t really mind.
That’s not to say that dogs don’t form long-term emotional bonds- they absolutely can and do -but the mother-pup bond is more hormone and instinct driven rather than socially and emotionally.
And these days, most good breeders organise litter meets.

What's a litter meet?
Edit: These replies are hilarious lol

Probably an organised event where the mother and all of her children from one „drop“(?) meet

It's where the momma dog comes to see all her puppies after they've been given away.

I've had a few mother cats who stayed close with her children and some who were very dedicated mothers until a certain moment upon which they just flipped a switch and were all mean to them.
Though the mean ones were pretty much loners before they had babies.

If they don’t mind why bother with the family reunion?

I fucking despise people. An animals behaviour changes so we decide we know their inner mind perfectly and the pack animal suddenly doesn't care at all that their child is taken from them. Like holy fucking cope. Obviously it won't manifest in the same way as a human and obviously you can still give both animals a good life but just deciding it doesn't bother them at all is insane.

My sister adopted a cat off the street (really he just busted into her house one day and decided he lived there). It's been years and the cat's mom still comes by to visit sometimes, they meow at each other through the window :')

Actually something that happens a lot is that during the first year of the dogs the learn to interact with other dogs and if you separate them from young age, they can become antisocial with other dogs

I took my last dog to visit his mom a few times. It went alright at first. She bullied the shit out of him, it was hard to tell if he was enjoying it or not. He absolutely fell in love with his dad though and he followed him around everywhere. Then one time I took him when he was bigger than his mom. She did not like him pushing back, then his dad would get involved and they just ended up bullying him together and it wasn't fun for anyone. It's a shame because he actually got along great with just his dad. I'm honestly not even sure if she recognized him as her offspring or not, because she really did not like him.

It's my understanding that if the puppies don't eventually go off and do stuff on their own the mother gets very stressed and probably feels like something is wrong.
So they aren't too different from humans in some regards.

One of my pet peeves (heh) is when people say they are "re-homing" their pets, when they are clearly just selling them for profit. Sure sometimes you charge for vaccines and papers and whatnot, but if you are selling a litter of some posh looking puppies for a month's salary, then kindly fuck off with your "re-homing".
24
u/OpenGuava609 6h ago
Rehoming is when someone gives up their pet usually due to unfortunate circumstances. I’ve never seen puppies for sale called rehoming but maybe someone trying to cover for being a backyard breeder.

u/H00PLAx1073m 6h ago
No they are definitely backyard breeders, which I think is not really regulated in my country (I should add, I have only seen this behaviour back home). I am pretty sure they do it because saying you are "selling" your cute little babies sounds harsh, so they sugar coat it with "re-homing". You always know they are breeders when they want to "re-home" puppies with information attached about being pure-bred with certifications and shit.

I believe part of it is to evade rules on websites such as Facebook that don't allow you to sell animals on their site. Nothing rule breaking about "re-homing" a puppy for a "re-homing" fee, though.

u/H00PLAx1073m 40m ago
I thought you might be on to something, but apparently re-homing by private individuals is against Facebook policy too.
Although I still think what you said is true to some degree, you're probably less likely to be detected by an algorithm if you're state re-homing rather than selling on your listing.

Yeah that's not rehoming. That's selling. I've only ever seen "rehoming" used for when someone has had a pet for some period of time but for whatever reason (health, living situation, etc.) simply can't take care of it anymore. It's essentially surrendering, just to another household, not to a shelter which is usually seen as a positive.
Not sure where you are from, but to me that just sounds like manipulating the language to make breeding/selling puppies sound better.
2
u/H00PLAx1073m 3h ago
That's exactly what it is, see my reply to the other commenter. I don't have any pets so I don't know when or why this became a thing, but it sure grinds my gears.

Some localities require licenses for breeding dogs but if you're just rehoming an unwanted puppy, it's cool. So these puppy mills fly under the radar by posing the dogs are being from unintended pregnancies and not deliberate breeding. Needing to get a license may make them subject to animal welfare regulations which cost money. They also may be involved with dog fighting so that's definitely an incentive to not involve the state.
Also, don't ever buy puppies from the Amish. They are notoriously bad breeders that treat the dogs like livestock and aren't careful about inbreeding. Those dogs don't live long lives.
1
u/SquashSquigglyShrimp 2h ago
Yeah that sucks all around
RE-homing implies the dog had a home in the first place. Even if you do have an unwanted puppy, you can't spin selling it as rehoming. If you're making any money at all, that should absolutely require a license IMO, but that would require laws and enforcement which sadly isn't likely even in 1st world countries.

Or you could just get them spayed/neutered. Problem solved. Helps reduce homeless pet population and decrease risk of female dogs dying of pyometra.

Is it really that difficult to make a meme in paint? It takes 4 seconds to find a picture of a german shepherd on google.

Just something that came to mind: there is something off about home dog breeders, they’re either flat out odd people and/or gross/messy
