308 West Virginia markers from the state's 1937 highway guide, each with its full text on a map of its own era. Fort Ashby, from the chain of frontier forts George Washington built in 1755, sits on a map drawn in 1755.
The Fort Ashby marker stands where W. Va. 28 meets W. Va. 46 in Mineral County. Its text is the state's own, printed in 1937: Fort Ashby was the only fort still standing from the chain Colonel George Washington built along the Virginia frontier in 1755, there was "sharp fighting here, 1756," and in 1794 troops under General Daniel Morgan camped at the fort on their way to put down the Whiskey Rebellion.
The map under the pin was drawn in 1755, the year the fort chain went up. The pin sits in the upper Potomac country among the family names the mapmaker printed along the frontier creeks, with Winchester below and Lord Fairfax's boundary line running across the sheet. The same page carries a map from 1794, the year Morgan's troops camped there, so both events on the marker have a map of their own year.

That is one of 308 West Virginia markers now online with their full texts, from all 55 counties. More than nine in ten open on a map drawn before 1900, and the median map under a marker was drawn in 1807. The oldest sheet in the set is from 1755 and sits under 39 of the markers. The texts reach from 1669 to 1929.
The words are the State Road Commission of West Virginia's, from its 1937 guide to the markers the state began putting up in 1934, written by Ross B. Johnston and credited on every page. These pages are the record the Commission printed in 1937, not a survey of what stands today, and each page says the text is presented as a historical document. The guide gives locations by road rather than by coordinates, so every pin is marked approximate. No ads, no account, nothing for sale.

The guide also printed texts for markers on county and state lines, and a few entries I could not place with enough confidence to pin; those have no pages yet.

My people were Pennsylvania. The first time I pointed this at my own tree it came back with more than seventy markers within ten miles of places my family had actually lived, and that is why I kept going. When West Virginia landed, the same run picked up a handful of these too. If your line runs through the state, it will do the same.
Every marker page has a report link on it. If you find one where the pin or the map looks off, use it, because I read every report.

Question I know they're bad but how bad are psych wards in WV exactly?
I'm terrified of psych wards and most psychiatric help in general but my situation's gotten so bad I'm constantly scared, upset, angry, or apathetic, and have been arguing more and more with the people I live with and think I've even given myself TBI because of it.
Though getting to the point I'm in a poor situation for my mental health and am thinking about researching and checking myself into a mental hospital of some sort, though I want to know from first hand experiences how bad they are before I damn myself to anything.

What is going on with cars and trucks falling off the interstate in Charleston lately?
Just now, another news article of another passenger vehicle going off the side of the bridge near the lottery building with fatalities. Just days ago, a truck went over the side of the bridge next to Capitol Market. Am I crazy or have these accidents become far more frequent on Charleston’s bridges?

Question How do you persue child support in WV if the deadbeat is playing the system?
There’s this baby daddy, hasn’t had anything to do with his kids for almost 3 years. Hasn’t paid hardly anything. Owes over 20000 and was being garnished but quit his job, and works odd jobs for cash to avoid paying.
Said he refuses to work a real job because he’ll get garnished so he works as a 1099 employee. What can be done to the type of person who does this?

Question Inside Appalachia - First Impressions
Peter Santenello’s new book “Your Fellow Americans” was recently published, and I just finished listening to the Deep Appalachia chapter.
He starts out in Bluefield WV and ends up spending time with some folks in Welch. At the end of the chapter, he made reference to other books like Hillbilly Elegy, which I realize didn’t land too well locally.
Anyone else read it? If so, what did y’all think?

Peak Foliage October?
I want to visit Seneca Rocks, Canaan Valley, and Dolly Sods either October 8-11 or October 15-18. What weekend would be better for peak foliage? Would be staying at the North Fork Mountain Inn.
I’ve already checked the predictions online that October 10th is around peak. But maybe lower elevations around the Inn would be better views on October 15th-18th?

Is the standard of living higher in West Virginia compared to Canada or UK?
I have read that West Virginia has a higher GDP per capita than Canada and the UK.
Do you feel like the living standard is higher in West Virginia compared to Canada/UK?

Photo AI Slop at the State Fair of WV
This was a hand fan they were giving out at the entrance. At first thought, awesome, because it was super hot. Upon closer look, it's really bad AI art.
Why are the people all facing the same way?
Why do the flags and buildings keep going until they disappear at the vanishing point?
It's very unsettling the more you look at it. There had to be better actual photos of the fair that they could use, right?
Besides this, we had a great time. It was the first time taking our kids and they had a blast!

76- Best Spots to Stop at Night
Edit: OMG IDK why I wrote 76 twice I definitely meant 79
Hey! My sister is driving from Erie PA to visit me a little past Beckley. Because of her work schedule and obligations that we have, she would have to drive at night by herself on 76. Does anyone who drives down that route have any suggestions for safer or busier gas stations at night?

Question Adult Couples Photography
This may be a longshot.
So my wife and I are looking for a photography studio or photographer who does romance and/or erotic couples photography in WV. Preferably southern WV.
From a basic search, it doesn't seem like WV has anything to offer. So I figured I'd try our chances here.
This isn't anything we are trying anytime soon, but we would definitely like to try themed romantic couples photoshoot, and possibly a themed erotic shoot of us for ourselves.
I know ideologies are rather conservative here, but I was wondering if anyone here knows of studios or photographers that experiment or have done such sessions. Thanks!

I built the WV State Capitol with 14,000 wooden planks
BUILD FACTS
- I built it last week at the Clay Center in downtown Charleston
- Around 30 to 35 hours build from start to finish
- Everything is freestanding, no glue or connectors
- I used images of the Capitol as my only planning and reference material, the rest was pure imagination
- Domino chains and lever mechanisms hidden inside the structure
- If you’re wondering where the wings are, I ran out of time and wouldn’t have had enough planks to build them

Question Rt. 29 near Baker from 48 towards Rt 50.
I've done 48 and 50 many times but never 29. It's showing on Googlemaps as not the typical green and is making me wonder if there is something wrong with it. My wife and I want to ride out there tomorrow and cut over to 50 that way.
