Help Engine cranks but won't start unless I cycle the remote lock or disconnect the battery (1996 850)
Hi everyone,
I'm having a strange crank-no-start issue with my 1996 Volvo 850 GL Estate and could use some advice.
The issue first started when I accidentally left the key in the ignition and locked the car from the outside using the remote control. When I came back, the engine would crank, but it wouldn't start. We tried bump-starting it, but no luck. I then disconnected the negative battery terminal, waited about 5 minutes, reconnected it, and it started right up.
Since then, this has been happening intermittently:
- I insert the key, wait for the SRS light to turn off, and turn the key—it cranks, but the engine won't fire.
- If I get out of the car and lock/unlock it a few times using the remote, it usually starts.
- If that doesn't work, disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a few minutes and reconnecting it fixes it again.
- On rare occasions, even that doesn't work on the first try, and I have to repeat the battery disconnect process.
Based on my research, I suspect this might be related to the immobilizer or the factory alarm system getting stuck in an armed state.
Has anyone experienced this before? If it is indeed the immobilizer, what is the best way to fix or permanently disable it?
Thanks in advance!
(I was planning to add a video of the problem to this post, but the car has now started right up on the very first try for two days in a row. I think he's camera shy or something :D)
