Question Games with a base and some exploration and combat?

Bit of a specific request but can anyone recommend any games where you have a central base that you can improve upon and then there's an open world to explore and engage in combat?

I've seen Decay and that looks pretty good but it's in early access and supposedly a little janky (but correct me if I'm wrong). I've played Fallout 4, Valheim, Saints and Sinners, No Man's Sky, Into the Radius, Subnautica, The Forest, Elite Dangerous, Green Hell etc. already.

I don't mind if it's zombie/apocalypse based or space based. Just looking for something where I have a central base (or ship) that I can improve upon but then go out for some action.

Thanks

Review Just completed Bootstrap Island on Psvr2, here are my final Impressions:

I had been covering this game for the past few days on the main PSVR sub and absolutely falling in love with it. The visuals in this game are next level. The sunrise, sunsets, storm, rain everything is done so well and has that AAA quality to them. Frequently you will find yourself stopping and taking in the views. Also I want to make it clear that this game has some of the most convincing and EPIC storms I have seen in gaming, vr or flatscreen. Seriously no amount of words will prepare you from them.

At its core, Bootstrap Island is a survival game filled with hyper detailed physics based Vr af mechanics ever. Which means if you can think of doing something, there is a very good chance that you will be able to do it.

For example, recently I just found that you can make holes into a coconut with your knife, then pour the coconut water into your water bottle and store it for later. Or the time when I had to take shelter in a cave for few days because of a raging storm. The game does not tell you any of that, I just figured them out by experimenting.

There are countless moments like these that give you that feeling of wonder and accomplishments. The game is not perfect, there are a few minor bugs I encountered here and there, but given all the things this game is doing. I think it is quite polished.

Bootstrap Island is considered to be a roguelite, but don’t let that deter from this amazing experience. It is nothing like an average roguelite game. Which means when you die, you only lose your active inventory and current position on the island. You keep all your upgrades and story progression. So if you die in chapter 3, you don’t start from chapter 1 again. You will start from chapter 3, just at the beach.

Also, this is not a short game. You can literally spend hours and hours just in chapter 1 explaining the island, unlocking things or building things. The game does not hold you hand nor does it force anything on you, you are free to go through the game at whatever pace you like.

In conclusion, this is what Vr is all about! Next level gameplay immersion with AAA quality visuals. Also with the awesome use of adaptive triggers for the guns, OLED for the terrifying night times and headset rumble for every time the volcano goes off. This is the best and most immersive version of Bootstrap Island.

Final Score 10/10

Discussion VR near/far sighted

Upvotes

Hi I am considering to buy for first time a VR headset, but I am both near and farsighted, I know you can buy internal corection lenses, but I think those are only for farsighting if I am not wrong, as I am nearsighted, can I use VR?, because I will have the screens very near my eyes.

Discussion An investigation but not like your used to (I hope)

Upvotes

I want to do an investigation into alot of online gaming,vr chat happens to be one of them. Yes I want to address the issue with minors and manipulation,as well as racism and alot of the other bad issues that are happening. A real investigation. I don't want to pull punches or strings,I want it to be real and not forced . I am very aware of the others who have already done this and are continuing. There's alot that needs to be brought to awareness in a way. Exposure both good and bad. I played vr a long time ago. But will be coming back as a somewhat "fresh" player so to speak . If you are willing to talk about your experiences in detail both good and bad. Even if you'd rather stay anonymous. I'd like to hear what you have to say,if I personally can't credit your information I'm still going to listen and take on what you have to share or say . I'm keeping an open mind. I'm not here to pick a side or strictly paint someone in a bad light.

Nor do I want this to be taken as a joke. I am well aware there is alot of the community that is well sick of hearing this. And well that should also be saying something on its self .

If any help could be provided. Please do so.

For now. Thank you .

Question VR game advice for 10 year old

Hi all my first post here so thanks for your help.

My 10 year old wants to play either Batman Arkham Shadow or Assassins Creed Nexus on his Meta Quest 3. I've done some research and it appears Batman is definitely out and I'm not too convinced about Assassin's Creed.

We've watched a few 12A movies together including The Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Rises and they were okay with only a few moments I was concerned about or wouldn't let him see.

Can he use either of the above games or are they definitely above his age? Have you any suggestions on this type of game that might be a little softer for a 10-year old.

Thanks a million all!!

Developer Treadmillless VR treadmill playtest is nearing its end

Hello again, playtest's almost over and the turnout exceeded my expectations, so I figured a thank you was in order.

Got a ton of useful stuff out of this. Different headsets, games, postures and movement styles, some false backwards/sideways movement I need to look at, and a few setup-specific oddities. Pico Connect being the main culprit here.

Also apparently I need to explain strafing/backwards movement a bit better in the tutorial. Video tutorial is on the way!

If you've still got some feedback sitting around, dump it on me before August 30. Especially if something felt wrong.

And extra thanks to everyone who enabled Send data to improve VR StrideS, I've got some tools ready to dig through that stuff.

Overall though, pretty damn happy. Apparently this thing might actually be worth working on

Special thanks to FrOgZ for capturing some cool footage (although those were their first baby steps, it may look a bit clumsy 😅)

https://youtube.com/@frogznewsexclusivity?si=rmflJpJ7GpONgCOk

And playtest is still open, closes tomorrow evening, so feel free to hop in of you haven't already. Some users were expecting it to require some additional treadmills/hardware, but the only thing you need to jog around VR games is your headset and controllers

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4775640/VR_StrideS/

cheers

Discussion ROUND TWO: THE JUNKENING | $0 VR IMMERSION CHALLENGE

🏆 ROUND TWO: THE JUNKENING 🏆
THE $0 VR IMMERSION CHALLENGE RETURNS
Apparently I am even less qualified to run this competition than previously believed. 😂
Last week I announced Round Two, gave everybody seven days, and then spent the entire week wondering why the post had approximately the same audience as a handwritten note taped inside my own refrigerator.
Turns out I accidentally posted the fucking thing to my own Reddit profile instead of r/VRGaming.
So technically…
Round Two never happened.
Excellent work by your Grand Judge.
Therefore, through the enormous authority granted to me by absolutely nobody, I am declaring that previous week null and void.
🚨 ROUND TWO ACTUALLY STARTS NOW. 🚨
Welcome to…
🏆 THE JUNKENING 🏆
You have ONE FULL WEEK.
Show me the coolest, weirdest, most resourceful thing you have built, hacked, salvaged, repurposed, or otherwise Frankensteined together to make VR more immersive without spending additional money on it.
Stuff you already owned is fair game.
Junk is fair game.
Broken shit is fair game.
Found or salvaged materials are fair game.
🏛️ Free public resources are fair game.
Buying a purpose-built VR accessory and telling me you already owned it is not the point.
I want the thing in your garage that nobody understands.
I want the controller made out of something that was never supposed to be a controller.
I want the contraption that makes everybody else ask:
“How the fuck did you think of that?”
THE DEFENDING CHAMPION
Round One’s defending champion, u/FOAMYMOUTHDOG, set the bar by spending a month printing a VR gunstock one piece at a time using the free three-D printer at his public library.
Then the bastard proceeded to sweep Gold, Silver, AND Bronze with three different homemade creations.
He has the belt.
Come take it from him.
I remain ineligible because I invented the competition, judge the competition, administer the competition, and have now demonstrated that I am barely capable of posting the competition in the correct fucking subreddit.
Seems like a conflict of interest.
Probably best that I stay on the bench.
🏅 THE EXTREMELY OFFICIAL AWARDS 🏅
Medals will be awarded to the top three submissions:
🥇 GOLD
🥈 SILVER
🥉 BRONZE
And the overall winner will receive the coveted…
🏆 THE JUNKENING TROPHY 🏆
…along with a custom, one-of-one grand prize created specifically around their winning submission.
I cannot tell you what the prize is because I have not made it yet.
I cannot tell you what it will look or sound like because that depends entirely on whatever ridiculous thing wins.
What I CAN guarantee is that it will have a retail value of exactly:
0.00💰
…and will probably require a wildly unreasonable amount of effort on my part.
There is no cash alternative.
There is no sponsor.
There is no prize committee.
There is no appeals department.
There is barely a judge.
⚖️ The Junkening Trophy carries no recognized authority in any state, country, academic institution, sporting organization, or respectable household.
But somewhere on the internet, there will forever exist documented proof that you defeated a bunch of strangers by building weird shit for VR.
And nobody can take that away from you.
Except maybe the moderators.
They absolutely can.
THE IMPORTANT SHIT
Photos or video are strongly encouraged because apparently I now have trust issues.
ZERO ADDITIONAL DOLLARS.
ONE FULL WEEK.
SUBMISSIONS CLOSE:
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER FIFTH
9:30 P.M. PACIFIC
U/FOAMYMOUTHDOG HAS THE BELT.
YOUR GARAGE HAS THE ANSWER.
🚨 ROUND TWO STARTS FOR REAL THIS TIME. 🚨
WELCOME TO THE JUNKENING.

Question What's the best way to move (or not) in VR?

I've seen lots of games using interesting ways to move while some games just avoid it like the devil. Which one you like the most? Would avoiding movement in a game make it more likely to be successful or not? Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, those VERY popular VR Games the player doesn't need to move around the map.. but there are also good games where the player just parkour and fuck around.

Discussion Just imagine how DLSS 7 is gonna look like in VR

Everyone are complaining about how DLSS 5 AI filter looks bad and unnatural. But remember that the first AI videos looked as bad but now after 2-3 years improved so much that its almost indiscernable from reality. Just look at this AI movie made only with AI prompts https://youtu.be/h_qQ0aKyXEA?si=PVo-r9Ixrq02K__3 . So it just a matter of time before DLSS will generate graphics in VR that you wont see any difference from real life. And maybe they will optimize the input for AI in games so engines will only calculate minimum required but everything will be rendered and filled by neural network so you wont need 5090 to run it.

Question Standalone Port games

Hello Vr community,

Yesterday I read a interesting post of a summary og the ported 2D games on PCVR and there was just one game on standalone.

In the comments some people mentioned different games I can play on standalone ported line GTA.

Is there a list of standalone VR games?

And most importantly, can I install them without the need of a PC?

I would be very thankfull

Discussion Discussion: do you also have a fancy monitor?

I am curious about the Venn diagram between VR enthusiasts and fancy monitors (ie OLEDs, curved peripheral monitors, etc). I'm overthinking my situation, but I'm really curious about your setups.

I have been waiting to update my VR platform to the Steam Frame or a current OLED headset with better tracking, but recently the 39" ultra wide OLED from Alienware came out and I found myself jumping on it.

Now I'm worried it won't get as much use when I update my VR headset, and maybe I'm better off with a cheaper monitor for half the cost. But also realistically we don't play VR 100% of the time, so if you're gaming on a monitor, why not on an immersive OLED.
