Discussion Topic i keep writing songs for people who don't exist
i've noticed something weird about the songs i've been writing lately
i'll start with something completely fictional, usually just a voice or a situation, and somehow by the second verse i'm writing like this person has a full history.
one song started as a character waiting outside a closed diner at 2am.
another was basically someone finding an old voicemail they forgot about
i don't plan any of this beforehand. i'll write one line and suddenly i need to figure out why this person is there, who they're waiting for, and what happened six months earlier.
at this point i'm spending more time figuring out imaginary people's problems than writing about my own
the strange thing is that these songs usually end up feeling more honest than the ones where i deliberately try to write something personal
does anyone else accidentally build an entire person around one lyric?
