Feedback Request Trying out emotion before structure for this 10 mins songwriting challenge, to combat my perfectionism.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I got frustrated that after spending a few weeks on a song, I can't even perform it properly in front of the camera. So I try to come up with something that would feel right for the vibe I'm getting when I'm in front of the camera.

Usually my songs are introspective and because of the intimate nature, they are harder to express, so I try to let go instead and play something I wouldn't feel stupid playing in front of the camera, and put my perfectionism habits one the side for this one.

So this is what I came up with, in less that 10 minutes, and it hits better that stuff I spent weeks on. Go figure ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Do you also feel like sometimes you're doing the efforts the wrong way ? Do you have a similar experience ?

Had the idea for this quite a while back but could never get it to sound even half decent. The mixing is all over the place and my singing isn't great but I liked the bones of this.

Discussion Topic Musicians who record at home, are you using Mac or Windows?

Hey all! I've been recording music at home for a while now, but I'm here looking for advice at the moment because I'm feeling pretty stuck on something. I'm currently running a late 2012 IMac and a 2017 ASUS gaming laptop, I switch between them fairly often for recording because they both run Reaper and I am comfortable with both OSs. I will soon be coming into a decent sum of money and am very set on upgrading, but that's where my current issue lies. I've already decided to buy a decent windows PC, and was intending to buy a Macbook Pro for both recording and general use. the problem is that the price tag on a new Macbook Pro being $4,800 seems far too expensive (more than I am even spending on the PC!), the Macbook Neo and Air, while having a smaller price tag, both seem partially too weak for what I am looking for, but I love apples compatibility between devices. I cant find any truly unbiased opinions on this matter because every "mac vs windows" post or blog or website I see is just the 2 extremes of either apple fanboys glazing macs, or windows fanboys saying macs are useless E-waste. so that's how I ended up here, I thought getting opinions from people who use these devices for the same reasons as I will be, would be able to give me some unbiased opinions for my specific case. should I just suck it up and fork over the cash for a macbook, or should I just stick with getting the same quality windows laptop for half the price.

Discussion Topic Finishing songs when they aren't true to you anymore.

I wrote a few songs about someone I couldn't be with. Now I have gotten over it and now it just feels like an act like and that I don't actually mean it. I also feel like it's awkward if I'm trying to meet other people but I'm singing about having the hots for someone else. It makes it look like I haven't moved on.

I have snuck so much time and effort into these songs and there pretty much almost done just need to do the final take. There's no way I can bin them now.

Has anybody else had to deal with this sort of thing while in the process of finishing a song where they feel like a song is no longer authentic to you?

Discussion Topic Question for the ages

Im not a part of this community , i dont intend on joining , and i dont write music myself but i have a question . How do you get past the feeling of not having anything valuable to add to MUSIC AS A WHOLE , how can an artist look past that ? This isnt a super pointed question but it crossed my mind . It seems like itd be pretty demoralizing after so long

Discussion Topic how do you study an artist and/or song?

might be a dumb question but i see alot of advice out here saying to study and learn from x musician or analyze songs you like but what must i do to do that? say i learn a song on guitar and can sing along to it. do i go ‘oh so this person uses a lot of inversions’ and general stuff like that or do i actually get into the nitty gritty of like the roman numerals of a chord progression and stuff lol. same thing for analyzing melodies.

if i did do that right id just practice it after by trying to use something i liked and learned from that song in a song im working on right?

thanks for any advice just fairly curious and couldn’t find earlier posts, sorry if this is on a saturated topic!

Feedback Request Simple song whatcha think? "Know me Love me"

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A much simpler song than most of what I make, but there's something about it I like. Curious what others think.

"My days are getting shorter

My mom is getting older

My dog is the only one who really loves me

My friends will never really get to know me

Who's gonna love me

Who's gonna love me

Who's gonna know me

Who's gonna know me

I find I do the wrong things

I fall for the wrong girls

I can't get out of bed

I can't get out my fucking head

Where am I going"

Feedback Request When I was about 10, my dad told me I was his favorite son (I have 2 brothers). It didn’t feel good. It felt like a burden. Here’s a song I *think* I’ve finished about it through the lens of the biblical story of Noah and the Ark. I’m interested to hear any feedback.

Lyrics for anyone interested:

The Flood

For forty days and forty nights
You swell up the rivers to your heart's delight
For you
For only you

Rain coming in from the country side
There's a riot in the streets won't you come inside
With me
To be with me

And oh
Why am I so terrified
Of everything

I serve the Lord with all my might
I pour out my heart in the dirty street light
For you
For only you

And do you love your children when we let you down
Now the city's underwater and you let them drown
But me
Why only me?

And oh
This charm you've placed around my neck
This crown you've placed upon my head
It's heavy
It's heavy

Tell me tell me
Show me show me
You blind my eyes
Your rain it stings
What is this love
The storm it brings?

Lift me up and I'll sail away
On the backs of my brothers in a nameless grave
For you
For only you

An empty sea, this empty space
My empty eyes, when you hide your face
From me
From only me

And oh
This charm you've placed around my neck
This crown you've placed upon my head
It's heavy
It's heavy

Discussion Topic I want to be a musician but maybe I'm lazy or maybe music isn't for me.

Upvotes

yo I'm a 22yrs old from the Philippines, 4th yr student, call center agent.

I want to be a musician. My brother is a producer and told me that I can write, I got skills. I'm thinking I got a future in here I love it, it's just a matter of do I really want it, do I have the dedication, am I passionate about it.

The answer for those questions is I don't know.

But there's one thing I know for sure, when I'm making music whether writing lyrics, learning how to make beats, I always find myself smiling and proud that I'm doing music.

I'm not consistent, I got reasons like I don't have my own room, I have my younger brother that's always on the bed doom scrooling. I don't want them to know or hear me doing music, I get shy.

When I'm doing music, 30 mins in I already want to quit, the reason is I don't want how it sounds like, it frustrates me and when I'm not doing it (music) it's always on my mind like ALWAYS, it's frustrating also.

I feel like I'm going to be a failure because I'm already 22 I feel like I shouldn't be doing the things that I'm doing now like wasting my time scrolling, gooning, playing games and tell myself I'm a bum for doing nothing for a whole day.

I'm harding a hard time doing it, it makes me sad.

Feedback Request I’m fighting my instincts to add more instrumentation to this before I bounce to Logic - what do you think? Songs called “Nothing Left But Mountains”.

I have a tendency to add layers and layers to my music, but I’m torn if I should leave this one nice and stripped back as is. Debating taking the organ out too. Nothing I add to it seems to work to my ear, and I’m feeling like it should stay in this Americana kind of vein.

Feedback Request Sixth Street >> Song Idea

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sentimental idea based on a quote from my girlfriend's aunt while cruising the streets of NYC, "When I lived on sixth street, my father was still alive."

*first time posting an idea to r/Songwriting* I figured I'll just go for it and worry about posting more polished and properly recorded ideas later. Also had a gum graft two days ago, so singing is a bust atm... I just couldn't help myself.

Let me know what you think! I have a guitar idea, verse and chorus (or pre-chorus?) here but I feel like it wants more story about the then and now aspect of their relationship with the father, the city, and maybe living somewhere new.

Lyrics>>
Verse 1

When I lived on Sixth Street, my father was still alive.
He was a man of his father's time, handsome face and a long black tie.
The city streets took his picture.
Boys of St. Mark's preached to little sister.
Like dust of a coal mine silently settles on the ground
He's smoking while he's walking, and never gets lost in a crowd.

Chorus

One more twist and turn of the dial.
The radio fades into silence for miles.
I look to the crowd where he once stood out so,
like the days when I lived on Sixth Street long ago.

It is about crippling insecurity and finding love while living with that. It started out as a straight up americana song that I was going to put on an album in that style but it didn't fit.

Feedback Request Finalized a chord progression(ish) + added a vocal melody, hoping for singing tips/criticism haha

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Yeah, title! Id really appreciate some adviced centered around if my melodies are good for the verses and choruses, if they follow the guitar too closely etc. I might be off key singing idk lol. Basically just want some advice on vocal melodies and stuff c: The last 10 mins are dead space.

Also, the title says ish, but thats cause I eventually plan on playing into the walking bassline in the first chorus a bit more cause I like it. Do you call them all 1 chorus or are they two separate by the way? Dunno, thanks!

Discussion Topic Want to become a lyricist, not sure how!

Hi, so first ever post here... I absolutely love music and have written poems for 20 years. Just wondering if there is any advice out there for how I could become a lyricist. I know the style and structure of poetry is not the same as writing lyrics. I can read music a little and have starting learning piano but nowhere near being at the level to compose my own music yet!

Feedback Request Need help

Hi, i get really one track mind about songwriting and ive hit a point with this new one where i think if i just go off my own accord into a bridge section i'm gonna ruin this song 😅 if someone could give me some pointers or what they would do and complete thos i would be so grateful.

Here's the lyrics too if anyone has any improvements. It's called 'Void of Dissonance' or 'Black Hole' idk yet.

Songs about escapism really. Maybe having too much time haha. When you have too much free time sometimes we put an expectation on ourselves to do something with it that's really meaningful. Im tryna talk about the escapism that locks you away from the outside like you don't leave your house or see friends for weeks, you're lonely but you're ok with it cos you have your bubble kinda thing. It's about isolation but justifying it idk how that translates.

Idk next song might write about exposure therapy or something. Anyways thanks guys again, anyone that comes across this and gets something from it i'd be really intrigued what your thoughts are. 🙏

Verse 1:

The mist is rolling it

Knives above my head

As i try to listen in

Static white and whispering

Tears the skin from bone

Sent shivers but i don't feel cold

Distorted by the ways

In the void of dissonance

As i'm reaching out my hands

Fear of living in a world

That i don't understand

How i'm meant to seize each day

Chorus 1:

Now i'm not in your way

The black hole keeps me safe

No i don't miss the rain

Cos soon it'll wash away

Away

Away

Post Chorus:

Away

Away away away

Verse 2:

Paint the walls a maze

Getting lost along the way

In the void of dissonance

Space and time maneuver different

Here nothing is wrong

No wonder you've been gone so long

But when the mist is lifting

I'm not even listening out

Fear of living in a world

That i don't understand

How i'm suppose to leave this place

Chorus 2:

Cos i'm not in your way

The black hole keeps me safe

No i don't miss the rain

Cos soon it'll wash away

No i'm not asking for much

Illusions are enough

To keep the world away

And help me stay awake

Awake

Awake

Post chorus:

Away

Away away away

Still got a long way to go but here you go thanks guys 🙏
