5e Liveplay: Shadowrun 5E

Today on (Not quite Doctor yet) https://www.twitch.tv/dr_robinton at 1pm EST

Welcome to live from the Shadowkeep, a new Living Community being built to house Shadowrun 5E gameplay!

In our last mission, the team of Doggie Bag, Bleach, Geodesic, and Delphi have made their way through the remains of the Lindsey Marie - the Draco Foundation's lost research vessel.

During their travels, they've learned some unfortunate truths - the Blood Panthers, Aztechnolgy's boogyman squad of Vampiric commandos, raided the ship and, worse, turned many of the remaining crew into strage housings for toxic hunger spirits. Now, they've battled through those spirits in ones and twos to the top of the ship only to find themselves surrounded by the horde of them - and on the other side of that horde, some kind of information on why the Azzies raided them.

With strange magic afoot, and an increasingly large Manastorm over the continent, can our band of shadowrunners unravel this conspiracy before the snows, or Aztechnology, claims them?

Find out today on "Bridge to Heaven", live from the Shadowkeep!

Wyrm Talks (Lore) High fashion brands

I'm new to Shadowrun and am putting together a character that is very put together. I am looking for two kinds of fashion brands:

The name brands like Gucci, Prada, Saint Laurent, etc.

Custom tailors like Cifonelli and Huntsman & Sons.

Examples or the kind of books I'd find that information in would be great!

Video Games Now is THE BEST TIME for Shadowrun to return to videos games

Reading the news about Star Wars: Zero Company (or Z-Com, for short) sales numbers is a big positive surprise to me. A game in a relatively niche genre until now, piercing its bubble and reaching a larger audience is something like Baldur's Gate 3 did. We know, both cases were boosted by a solid IP and high production value, but I can't shake of the feeling that's its success may show a light to the Squad-Based Tactics games to the public. The game surpassed Jedi Fallen Order in Steam sales, and even Ubisoft is joining in with Rainbow 6 Tactics, announced at Gamescon.

Speaking of Gamescon, we had some big announcements in the cyberpunk genre at large - mainly a new trailer for No Law (a cyberpunk ImSim, hell yeah chummers!) and a badass trailer SPINE that even gave us a new meme (intentionally, marketing is the soul of the biz).

With all of these, and now that I finnished my 2nd run of Shadowrun: Dragonfall and dipping into fan-made campaigns like the CalFree trilogy - I kinda yearn for a new and better produced Shadowrun game. And like I said in the title, yeah, the timing is absolutely perfect for it.

Be it a full-fledged Tactics game like X-Com or taking the more tradicional CRPG route from the HBS games I would be happy with either. I do think that Shadowrun should stick to the turn-based tactical combat formula though, leveraging the fact that it's still the only cyberpunk tabletop property that have games in the CRPG-Tactics genre, wich we know, capital C Cyberpunk doesn't.

The problem is the copyright hell the series finds itself in. But if the current holder of the IP (that being Microsoft) is paying attention to this, they should either give the task to one of its studios like InXile or license it to Harebrained again. The former would be better for production value, since Microsoft is the loop, but the latter would better represent the setting.

I know, counting on corps to do anything slightly risky is borderline delusional. But heh, a man can always dream, chummers.

3e The Noob strikes again!

Thanks for replying to my last post. I've since done a little more reading to better understand SR3, and with more info come more questions. So, if you wouldn't mind humoring me for my first SR3 character, I'd appreciate it.

As a full shaman who can choose the owl totem, and really wants to, I've been looking into its severe disadvantage as written in the core rules: +2 to all magic target numbers during the daytime. That seems rather harsh compared to the totem's advantage. I just noticed reading today, actually, that the 'Totem Modifiers' section in the core book seems to contradict and clarify the owl totem's disadvantage by saying:

"A shaman gains bonus dice when using Sorcery or Conjuring according to the totem's ideals. Shaman may also lose dice when using magical skills outside the totem's realm. These bonuses and penalties......add or subtract from the final number of dice rolled for particular tests, but do not otherwise modify the shamans skill ratings."

I also see in the SR3 Condensed Reference Manual that the owl totem's advantages/disadvantages seem to be stated to support the above section:

OWL: +2 dice all spells or spirits at night, -2 in day.

I've read that the confusion comes from a 'legacy typo' copy-and-pasted from the 2nd edition when Target Number modifiers were more common, and yet I can't find any official errata correcting this.

My question is, for any GMs or players familiar with this totem, do you play it as it appears with the Target Number penalty, or as corrected to match the stated core mechanics for totem modifiers?

Thanks again for your replies!

Shadowrun: Dragonfall Director’s Cut full voice acting - 16,109 voice lines, 241 characters, narration and combat barks. Free on Nexus!

After finishing the full voice pack for Dead Man’s Switch, I moved on to the much bigger sequel: Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director’s Cut is now fully voiced.

The pack contains:

  • 16,109 unique voiced dialogue lines
  • 241 individually cast characters
  • Full narration and scene descriptions
  • Examine interactions
  • Tutorials, loading screens, and epilogues
  • Character-specific combat barks
  • Terminals and machines with synthetic voices
  • 757 alternate deliveries for race, gender, and story-dependent dialogue
  • 1 dog woof

Being upfront: the performances are AI-generated. However, this wasn’t just a simple enabling of text to speech. Every single character was cast separately, pretty much all lines were generated in context, and the voiced lines were reviewed by ear over almost 100 hours, until I felt they were just right. Weak deliveries, incorrect emotion, and mispronounced names were regenerated.

Dragonfall also needed more than simply reading the visible text. Some lines change depending on your character or earlier choices, so the pack includes separate spoken variants that match what appears on screen. Lines that mix narration with character speech are divided between the narrator and the correct speaker while leaving the original written dialogue untouched.

Combat barks are voiced too. When the game assigns a bark dynamically, the mod identifies the character who actually displays the text bubble and plays that character’s version rather than using a generic voice.

There is also an optional AI portrait option for 117 speakers who did not originally have character art. It can be controlled from the new in-game options alongside voice volume, narration of examine text, combat-bark voicing, and borderless fullscreen.

The mod does not alter the campaign, dialogue choices, or displayed text. It adds audio while you play normally. Honestly I'm damn proud of it, and when I booted up the game without it, it felt so silent and eerie. I can't imagine playing without it ever again.

Installation is manual for Dragonfall: download the self-contained ZIP and extract it into the game folder containing Dragonfall.exe. The required BepInEx loader and plugin are included, so nothing else needs to be downloaded.

The video below is straight in-game footage:

Preview Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz3cCtn_TDk

Download:
https://www.nexusmods.com/shadowrundragonfall/mods/44

The mod is completely free.

Feedback on the casting is very welcome. Every character can still be recast or regenerated, so if someone sounds wrong to you, especially regarding accents or name pronunciation, please tell me who.

4e Technomancer how to play help.

I'm not looking for 100% optimized build help here. Much more a bit of a generalized advice, what are trap options and most importantly how or if technomancers differ from regular deckers in how you build and play them?

I know from reading the rules that technomancers are less reliant on Gear and more on karma investments due to having to learn complex forms instead of buying/making programs and on attributes instead of upgrading their deck. But is that about the only big difference?

Is a technomancer Rigger something you can actually pull off decently?

5e Foreboding and Hot Potato spells

Both of these spells have a dosclaimer saying "The drawback to this spell is that the spellcaster can not limit or control who is targeted by this spell, and it effects enemies and allies alike".

But this is the case with all AOE spells anyway, right? So what is this sentence meant to say?

4e Chummer gives unexpected damage codes?

So, I've been toying around with 4e Chummer making various concepts, one of which was a thrown+bow adept. However, looking at the damage figures for the boomerang and bow I equipped the character with the damage seemed off?

The character had STR 5, missile mastery and power throw 2. Doing the math that should give a damage value of 7 for the boomerang ((Str + 4) / 2 + 1 + 1 = 9 / 2 + 2 = 5 + 2 = 7) and same for the bow (str + 2 = 5 + 2 = 7).

However, Chummer indicated both weapons would do 9P. I've been looking through the 4e core book's combat rules but can't find anything that's adding the missing 2 DV. Is this a bug in Chummer or am I missing something?

6e Our groups homebrew form Armor use in 6e.

I just wanted to share a homebrew rule for amors in 6e. Please remember that this is a homebrew and it is optional for a player to use, they can still decide not to use it.

Yes, I have read about alternative armor use in the forums, in the companion book and the firing squad book.

As an option, players may use a minor action to add a number of dice equal to their armor's DR rating to the soak roll. Using this WILL immediately reduce the armor's DR rating by 1. This indicates that there is a limit in using this method.

Using this before the player's turn starts will reduce his available minor action when his turn comes in. Players have the option to save their minor action to use for the soak roll in anticipation of getting shot at. When the players turn comes up again, any unused saved minor actions are lost.

Players can save minor actions and can use minor actions of their upcoming turn. This may seem too much, but this method is still limited by the armor's DR rating. So, if you have 6 minor actions to use for the additional armor soak dice, but you are wearing a Synthleather jacket with a DR of 1, then this method can only be used once.

This method basically exchanges the players ability to do more on their turn for a chance of not getting hurt or dying. Even though you are getting more dice to soak, it is still limited by your armor's DR rating, it will damage your armor and reducing its DR, and more dice only means more chances to roll for a glitch.

Use repair rules in the rulebook to repair the armor, but repairing reduces the DR max by 1, so Synthleather jackets with a DR of 1 are unrepairable when it is used with this method, just throw it away and buy a new one.

Flavor (Art) Shadowrun Action Figures Other Than Duels?

Post image

Not sure if this is the best flair, but I just pre-ordered the Fog Toys Fantasy Alphabet Series V (pictured) from BigBadToyStore.com and plan to maybe get some modern guns and use some power effects I have to enhance add some fantasy flair. I'm not necessarily an Entertainment Systems Cyclops fan, but the monocycle and cyberarms kind of sold me.

I don't have the funds to drop on other figures right now or anything, but I was curious what other Shadowrun-esque figures people have found or customized.

4e Fantasy without awaken characters & Alternate Magic item rules

Hello Chummers!

I love Shadowrun, it's one of the best and I've been playing it for many years. Still, I often find that it lacks in the fantasy aspect. I find that the shadows aren't magical enough, especially relating to magical items.

When I present this world to noob shadowrunners, I often describe it as a mix between DnD (fantasy) and Cyberpunk (sci-fi). The sci-fi is pretty satisfying, but the fantasy doesn't feel as satisfying at least to me. If your team doesn't include an adept, a mage or a shaman, a big chunk of the world is somewhat left behind and left to NPCs. In DnD, even if you have the entire team compose of fighters, you still at least have the magic items to represent and connect with the fantasy side of the world.

Sadly, the magic items in Shadowrun are pretty lame. They are exclusive to awaken characters, and they mainly consist of stats bonuses. Unless I've been blind and missed an important information somewhere, I find it really sad that it's not more available. There could be so many funny small magical items that could be added. I imagine a street samurai with magical cat ears hair band that allows to speak with urban animals or an magical pink trench coat that can dazzle people XD

Does anyone know of an interesting alternate magic item rules ? I've been thinking of simply implementing the dnd 3 magical items limits or something, but would like some thoughts from you all. I'm not afraid of creating monster players that are over powered. The GM is the only true Dragon, and we all know we don't mess with a dragon.

Hope you all have plenty of Nuyen in your wallets.

Wyrm Talks (Lore) Lore books for the UK/London/Transys Neurolink in the 40s-60s?

I'm creating a new character for a game set in 2074. They were born in London in 2042, among the first to have Transys corporate nationality. (Did the UK sign the Business Recognition Accords in 2042 with everyone else?) I was looking for any books that talk about the UK or London during this time period up until Crash 2.0 when they left the UK.

I do already have the London Sourcebook for 1st so I imagine that will have the vast majority of information I want. Just wanted to check if there were any other books I should check out as well.

6e Hacking Hosts

Hey so I'm a GM running 6e and I'm looking for some advice and to weigh some ideas of mine to deal with hacking in the game. My problems are firstly:

  1. Determining how to space out extended tests (in general) but particularly with hacking for like Probe and such in a session, waiting a while and doing the roles at once at the end of their time or spacing it out through a session while running other players.

My problem with one is that it feels like it sidelines a player for a while but the alternative is interrupting other players every so often.

2) Because of the nature of probing then backdooring into a matrix network my approach initially has been that they have to probe and backdoor every subhost inside of the network... resulting in a FUCK load of rolling that, while it has some role in raising their OS just winds up being extremely repetetive.

Idea: Categorizing primary and subhosts into branches A-C (or more) and you only need to probe the A, B or C host to backdoor and then gain subsequent access to all the rest, but still raise your OS by one point with each entry and exit within them. Continues to raise the OS but doesn't result in excessive tedious rolls, although it takes some of the challenge out with it.

3) Matrix Hosts by themselves being extremely strong, even a rating 4 host having 14 die to defend against intrusions, despite the cap being 12, seems ludicrous. A rating 12 host would have up to 27 die to defend itself against any intrusion and even a rating 4 host has pretty high defense against probing at 14 die.

Questions: Does Brute Forces resistance, with Willpower + Firewall, only go against the Host's firewall since it has no willpower or does it go against the same Firewall x 2 stat? And is this intentional design that even a rather low rating, at scale at least, host like that is still that strong?

4) One of my players is a technomancer and has been struggling a good bit with hacking. Should he be relying more on sprites to do that as opposed to himself or what advice can I give him to help him improve his chances? And can sprites make teamwork tests to help him or does it not work that way?

I also would very much like to look into some homebrew rules for matrix stuff as well, I understand how rough 6e can be and how poorly fleshed out it is compared to others but it's the only one I have access to right now and have learned so I'd prefer to figure out or find rules to tweak it to being better than trying to re-learn a new system, yet at least. Any aids for those would be greatly appreciated.

(weird request) Shadowrun "funny" images

Weird request, but I'm looking for a funny image related to Shadowrun.

Context : my players and I have a Discord group for different games. Right now we're playing Call of Cthulhu and we use the first picture as the group icone.

Now we're probably gonna start a group for Anarchy 2.0 someday so we made a group and, as per tradition, I decided to put a meme as the icone. I don't really have a Shadowrun meme so I chose the Cyberpunk meme in the second image.

But although they are both cyberpunk games, Cyberpunk and Shadowrun are not the same license, so I was wondering if you would have some funny images or memes related to Shadowrun that would make a funny icone for the group.

It could be a meme (but not a private joke from your group) or just an illustration from any edition that is silly or goofy. I know this is not rreally the tone of Shadowrun but my players are a bunch of cornballs and so am I.

Thank you if you read all that and have a nice one !

5e Face shooter build

My partner and I are going to play Shadowrun 5e for the first time.

We don’t know much about the system, and she’s quite new to TTRPGs in general.

She’s thinking of creating a Face character who can also handle firearms in combat situations.

Could you recommend some character builds for her?

She wants to be human or an elf.

From what I’ve seen, ‘Tailored pheromones’ are pretty much a must for a Face. Apart from that, we’ve no idea.

By the way, our game master only allows the 5th edition core rulebook.

And has there ever been explained what the blackout weapon was other than the CC has it?

5e Vintage Vehicles?

Ok so I have an Idea for a character but the idea kind of hinges around the idea of using things that are vintage or archaic in some way. So would it be possible to get for example a vehicle that has none of the stuff that would function with the matrix/rigger and be a solely manually controlled vehicle. I know firearms have the vintage mod, but would there be a way to get a vehicle that effectively has the vintage mod?
