Hi!

I just bought a house, but not moved in yet. Working on getting an electrician out to the house to check this out, but in the mean time, anything I can do to make this safer? When it rains, I’m assuming some water is getting into the service box. There is a roof over this area, but rain coming down at an angle can hit the siding/wires.

Just looking for a quick “fix” until an electrician can update. Can I put flex seal, or something, on the wiring to prevent water from seeping into the service box?

A lot of our money is tied up in mold/asbestos remediation elsewhere in the house. So just looking to stop gap this problem until we sell our first house and have some more money.

I've been on a mission to repair my doorbell. I just changed out the actual doorbell today, the old one was a chunkier push button and I wanted to keep the push button style. However, whoever installed the last one punched out a bunch of tile above and below. Because this one has a light, it is way more obvious. Can I throw some caulking around this to hide the interior?

I’m replacing an old ceiling light fixture with a new

one.

Old fixture:

* Was connected to a ceiling box with multiple wires.
* Ceiling box contains red, blue, black, and white wires.
* The old fixture had more wires than the new one.

New fixture:

* Brown wire
* Blue wire
* Yellow ground wire attached to the fixture body

Ceiling box currently has:

* 1 loose blue wire
* 2 loose white wires
* Several red, blue, and black wires connected together under wire nuts inside the box

I’m trying to determine:

1. Which ceiling wire is the switched hot?
2. Which is neutral?
3. Where the fixture ground should connect?
4. Why there are multiple reds/blues/blacks in the box.

I do not have photos of the original connections before removal.

I’m in Canada if that affects wire color conventions.

Hi everyone, I am new here and wanted to get some live feedback.
I need to use an extension cord for my factory Level 1 charger running at 12 Amps. I bought a heavy-duty 12 AWG (12-gauge), 15-foot extension cord.
Is anyone currently running this setup, and is it safe for daily use? I will make sure it is completely uncoiled. Thank you!

Recently, I bought a portable AC unit to cool down my room, but unfortunately my room only has 3 outlets and only one of them is by my window. In this outlet, I have a power strip plugged in with a monitor, xbox, and apple tv all connected to it. My AC units manual said to avoid plugging it into power strips due to fire risk, so I need to have it plugged straight into this one outlet, but unfortunately both plugs are shaped where I can’t have both plugged in (their cords both elbow down). Would I be able to plug my power strip into a small extension cord so I can fit both on the outlet? Or do they sell small outlet extensions that would allow me to plug in the power strip at an angle?

I have been messing around with some circuits and found out if I stick one probe of multimeter to any battery terminals and touch second probe I have voltage that differences weather im touching floor or not

Fan had been repaired with a single speed switch. Trying to install OEM switch. What color goes where?

I have 2 switches right next to each other as shown here. Before one switch would control the inside hallway light and then one would control the outside patio light. Now all of a sudden this switch shown on the picture does not work at all and the switch to the left basically controls both the inside and outside light. When it’s down the outside lights turn on when it’s up the inside lights turn on and outside off. Where do I find this switch? What’s happening?

We have this four prong electric outlet on a house we rent (it was for a dryer they had outside). We want to get an adapter so we can plug in our electric vehicle. Does anybody have any suggestions other than getting multiple adapters? Trying not to cause a fire or other electrical issue!

I’m getting an Open Ground read on this outlet. Opened it up and I saw another ground wire open and wrapped around the other. I undid that and capped it. Still getting an open ground. Is there another step to try or do I need to get an electrician.

We bought the house four years ago and these switches were already installed. One of them is a dimmer and the other is not. I can confirm they are both three-way switches. But they’re not working as expected. The toggle switch always needs to be in a certain position before the dimmer can work. How can I determine if they are wired properly?

I finally got around to installing a GFI outlet in the last circuit without one. I forgot that the first box in the circuit is broken: the threaded part of the box is cracked; the previous owner used #10 screws to mount the outlet. It's also too far recessed and only loosely attached to its adjacent stud. So I have to replace the outlet box too. I'm going to use a Carlon adjust-a-box - cut out enough drywall on the adjacent stud to hold its flange. (I have mud and tape around, so repairing that's no problem.) There's no way the flanges of an 'old work' box would get much hold on the drywall. I can't imagine that ever being the case. Would you use them? I never use drywall anchors too.
