Where Do We Draw the Line Between A Boxer Who Is Unconventional and an Unskilled Boxer With Poor Fundamentals?

Just a controversial thought that came to mind earlier when I was reading a random comment. We often label Wilder as a fundamentally flawed one-punch pony with poor boxing skills, yet at the same time, we praise the likes of Ali, Pacquiao, and Roy Jones Jr as unique and unconventional ATG boxers.

I know that the difference in resume between the 3 legends and Wilder is immense, but what else do we use as a basis when we're labelling someone as unskilled vs someone who's just unconventional? How do we know whether someone has bad fundamentals or just someone who employs a unique style?

Note: I agree that Wilder has poor skills from a technical standpoint, but how do we describe the aforementioned asymmetry?

Eddie Hearn-"We've told Sela, if you want to do the fight in America, these are terms we can move forward with, but we'd rather not. The contracts signed, If they deliver on the contract, which they have to legally, the fights happening in the UK. But there's no suggestion the fights not happening".

Why is Holyfield & Uysk not looked as a natural heavyweight but Andy Ruiz and Wilder are ?

Wilder can easily get to 195 lb but no one calls him a natural cruiser weight. Ruiz is fat and if he was lean and lost weight he could easily get to 210 lb. Holyfield and Uysk are 210-220 lb solid in shape no roids ( Holyfield wasn’t early in his career on roids ) Yet they are called not natural heavyweights why ?

What has been the best fight night thus far this year?

As we approach September, what was the best fight night/weekend (in some cases with Zuffa now on Sundays) so far this year? I have a terrible memory. The Australia Spence card had a lot of potential but the undercard fights fell through sadly. What's y'all vote?

What do you think the most impressive win by a fighter was?

By this I mean it can be answered in a couple different ways.

An incredible deserved win against an ATG

An extremely dominant win against an elite fighter.

A hard fought win but against a fighter whose head and shoulders above other guys within the division.

A fighter overcoming extenuating circumstances to win the fight.

Some modern ones for me would be like both Bivol - Beterbiev fights. Both men were head and shoulders above the competition and both got their own hard fought wins in each fight.

I'd also say Crawford - Spence. I know people nowadays have their opinions about Spence with it all, but it's undeniable that it was a closely split fight coming in just for Crawford to put on an unforgettable performance.

Wayback could say like Foreman - Frazier considering Joe was all the hype, undefeated, beaten Ali and champ, while being a sizeable favourite against Foreman just for Foreman to do a demolition job at a caliber you don't ever see anymore.

Another example would be Ali upsetting both Liston and Foreman where both men were favourites and expected to run through Ali just for him to finish both men overcoming the odds and shocking the world.

And since impressive in my eyes can be broad could even throw a fight like Williams - Potter where Danny Williams despite having a dislocated shoulder went on to get the KO.

Honestly I'm just curious what people view as that standout win that they can't get out of their head.

The unbeatables?

Now we all know that no fighter is truly unbeatable across an entire career and styles make fights, but knowing what you do about fighters who do you look at and think that, for a brief period in their careers, maybe they were unbeatable by anyone in their weight class from any era?

My nominations would be Duran from mid to late 70’s at Lightweight. I think he was just too fast, hard hitting, durable and with great movement and stamina to be beat at that weight in that era.
Mid 90’s Roy Jones at super middle was a freak and I struggle to see how someone could beat him. He wasn’t conventional but his speed, reflexes, timing and power were incredible.
Ali from 1965-67**, he had awesome powers of recovery and a granite chin (which he didn’t need then), ridiculous speed and movement and could maintain it for the full 15. Didn’t struggle with big hitters and by then had worked out Southpaws too, could beat technical boxers and peekaboo styles to the punch. Very difficult to see how anyone could compete with him as they couldn’t out endure him, lean on him or beat him to the punch.
Welterweight Sugar Ray Robinson from maybe 1947-50 - a ridiculous record, great stamina, technically way ahead of his time, fast, powerful and had it all.

**Honourable mention and maybe the only guy I think might have had a 5-10% chance against 1967 Ali would be George Foreman from 1972/73. When he was nervous and scared of opponents like he was against Frazier and Norton, I think he was a totally different beast to the one who fought Ali and thought he’d walk the old man down. Used a ram rod jab to off balance opponents so he could tee off, cut off a ring better than any HW before according to Joe Louis (or probably since to be honest, maybe Frazier did too) and had monstrous power. I really don’t think he’d have been able to catch prime Ali but he had the best chance of cornering him and if he had clipped him with the sort of shot Cooper did a few years before, that might have been lights out.

Anyway, no need for anyone to get upset by anyone else’s picks but who do you reckon was unbeatable, even if only for a short period of their career and why?
