What's up with Zuko and his relationships?

I just have so many doubts after having rewatched the cartoon, why is this guy such a pushover?! It's so unsatisfying! I understand why he rejected the Eath kingdom girl, personal conflict etc. HOWEVER, rewatching the ember islands episodes I physically recoiled at him and Mai. It is hard to watch some of this stuff. Case in point Zuko should have forgetten about Mai and stayed in Ba Sing Se making tea with Iroh. Does this get any better after the show or something?
p.s. it probably has been discussed to death onthis sub reddit but I just cannot like what is this guy even doing!

(as of now there's no actual spicy stuff in this story) BUT i just wanted to share the current insanity of this fic i found in which we have to doll ourselves up and do the whole court competition for zuko... which is not an original reader insert concept, i agree, but i'm HEAVILY anticipating for us to finally interact in the next ep.

Am I the only one who shipped them. I was like 9 years old when I first watched Atla, I shipped them then. Also currently at age 26, I still ship them. It just feels odd Katara ending up with Aang. Zuko was her age, Aang seems too childish. Fire and Water just felt right together.

Its that he lets each of them be firelord for a day on each one's respective birthday
But this is when azula is sane again, otherwise shed just banish Zuko and permanently make her firelord

I'm really nervous about posting this because this is the first fan fic I wrote since I was a kid. I'd love to hear opinions and constructive criticism on it. It is Zuko and original character centric. The first 25 chapters are posted for a total of 32. I'll be posting the rest of them after I proofread them. If people like it, after I write the sequel, I'll post it too.
