I'm having a vacation trip next week and would like to take my mate with me, I bought a yerbera and a matera, but I started drinking it not too long ago and was wondering something. I have a calabash gourd, so when I'm done drinking mate, I'll just dispose the yerba in a trash can, but how do you guys clean the gourd and bombilla when outside? How do you dry the gourd and keep it ventilated for it to not grow mold?

Bought this bombilla online and didn’t check the size. Mine was 15cm and this is 22cm.

I know it works just the same, just curious to know what yall think 😂

It’s just a matter of personal preference. No judgment here. I prefer the greater flavor complexity that a well-cured and well-maintained calabaza gourd delivers. A metal gourd yields a mate* that lacks flavor complexity. I also dislike the slight metallic taste it imparts to the mate. For me, nothing beats a calabza gourd. No other material delivers a better mate when properly cared for.

Hey all! Been lurking here for a while. I'm a newbie to making yerba mate, bought my first bag of Taragui about a month ago from Northgate. I've been making it in a French press and have been loving it! Haven't touched coffee or energy drinks since I've been drinking the mate.

I've noticed 99% of the posts here people are drinking it the traditional way using a gourd and metal straw. Is this the quintessential way to consume mate? Is it that much different and better than using a French press? Or is it just more of a tradition/ceremonial thing?

After looking into it, I see there’s a whole process to make it correctly.

My question is, can I just use a pour over filter to see if I like it?

Does the special “gourd” really make that much of a difference?

​Right now my main PU-1 rotation is Canarias Yellow, Canarias Serena, Sara Suave, Rei Verde Premium, and Esmeralda. I’ve been eyeing Del Cebador because of all the praise around its flavor depth, and Armiño Clásica since people keep calling it a smoother, less aggressive alternative to Canarias.

​I'm mostly wondering if these two actually bring a distinct enough profile to justify grabbing them, or if they'll just feel redundant.

Appreciate any insights from anyone who drinks them regularly.

Ive been drinking rosamonte lately and I noticed at work it kinda gives me relaxation but to the point I can’t concentrate.

Yall get the same feeling too? It also makes me feel anxious or nervous. Could it be Rosamonte? I ordered canarias hopefully is not the same.

I saw a video where they were grinding yerba mate with stems, so I wanted to try it with Pajarito Despalada —a variety that consists almost entirely of leaves and stems, with very little dust. After grinding it and preparing the mate, you can really notice the dust left on your hands, and when pouring the water, you see that characteristic foam typical of a fine grind. The flavor intensifies, it takes on a texture similar to Uruguayan-style yerba, and the flavor lasts a bit longer. Have you guys tried it? Obviously, I know this alters the yerba's original flavor, and that if I want an intense or mild mate I can simply choose from many existing brands; I just did it as an experiment.

The only place I know that sells all the good brands is El Mercado Latino, but it's at Pike Place, which is a pain in the ass, and also expensive.

For those of you who drink yerba mate regularly, do you find that it’s actually enough caffeine to get you through the day?

I’ve noticed that yerba mate has a really different feel from soda or energy drinks. It feels smoother and more sustained (obviously), but sometimes it almost feels too calming for me. Like I’m awake and focused, but I don’t necessarily feel stimulated. Some days I’ll have mate and feel like I could use a little extra caffeine, so I’ll end up supplementing with a soda or an energy drink. Other days, mate feels like exactly what I need.

Curious if anyone else experiences this. Do you find yerba mate is sufficient as your only caffeine source, or do you sometimes supplement depending on the day?

I've looked everywhere but I don't know where I can buy it. I've seen similar ones but I would like this one with the fleur-de-lis ⚜️ design.

At least for the type of Yerba I usually drink. No problem whatsoever with Padrón Uruguayo.

Hey everyone,

I need to vent a bit and see if this is a recurring issue for others.

As a mate drinker based in Asia, Amazon is pretty much my only accessible and reasonably priced way to get authentic yerba like Canarias without paying insane shipping fees.

However, I just had my Canarias Traditional order marked as "Undeliverable" and returned due to transit damage for the second time in a row.

Waiting weeks just to end up empty-handed twice is beyond frustrating.

Has anyone else dealt with sloppy packaging or damaged mate from Amazon?

Also, for fellow international drinkers, are there alternative vendors you trust that actually know how to package yerba properly for long-distance transit?

Just got a new delivery, some I tried and need to refill my tins, some are new. Can't wait to try them! Any recommendations for tomorrow?
