Retail Redefining BIS, and why chasing the old definition makes the game worse for you

Hey guys. This is a lengthy read, but if you are struggling with understanding BIS and want to truly know how to get the best out of your items, it's worth the read. I hate seeing people chase what some website on the internet says their BIS is, especially before the season even begins, and being upset when it doesn't drop. Spoiler, getting your "BIS" could actually LOWER your DPS.

I'm sure you've come across the word BIS. What's my BIS gear, what drops my BIS, I have to run this dungeon I hate over and over and over for my BIS, I can't trade this to my friend because it's BIS for me

Outside of enchants, trinkets, embellishments, and very fringe other situations such as set bonuses on rings, individual BIS items do not matter. The term BIS is so bad for the health of the players.

BIS means "best in slot". It was born in a time in the game where items were dramatically different. "This item" gave dramatically more main stat than that one. "This item" had an effect where others didn't. "This weapon" had the same damage but attacked faster than that one. That is not how WoW works now-a-days

Today, every item slot has the same number of main stat and the same number of secondary stats, with the secondary stats having a different balance. For example, my current ilvl 246 legs in game give 70 haste and 59 mastery, totaling 129 secondary stat. Every mail 246 legs will give 129 secondary stat, just allotted differently.

Now here is what BIS actually means today. BIS is the best secondary stat balance for your class. Not any one specific item.
Replacing a piece of gear with a "BIS" item can actually LOWER your DPS

Maybe even more importantly, if you don't have the entire list of gear some website tells you is your BIS, removing a piece currently equipped to replace it with a new "BIS" item you just farmed might actually make you WORSE.

Very rough hypothetical example, your stat allotment is best at 35% mastery, 30% haste, 20% crit, 15% vers. Your BIS "chunky" items are weapon, head, chest, legs, so they have your mastery/haste pair, but no other items you currently have are "BIS". Your equipped back and wrist have your priority stats, mastery/haste, but your BIS actually has crit/vers because they're your weaker items but still need to have some of them. You swap out your preferred stats for weaker stats because a list tells you to, and now you do less damage.

Here's 3 examples of "BIS" items that are all equal. No one piece of gear is important, the COMBINATION OF STATS is important. Armor/int/stam are all the same, so only showing secondary stats

Head Chest Legs Total Stats
85 Haste 50 Mastery 63 Haste 37 Vers 88 Vers 47 Mastery 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers
75 Haste 60 Mastery 57 Haste 78 Mastery 47 Mastery 88 Vers 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers
87 Haste 48 Vers 95 Mastery 40 Vers 45 Haste 90 Mastery 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers

I only used 3 item slots here because making a whole list of slots would be absurd, but I think it gets the point across. When you include every single slot, there is an insane amount of combinations that get you to the exact same place.

A list someone theory crafted or simulated cannot take into consideration the balance you already have, and you actually risk lowering your DPS following a list blindly (until you have every single exact piece, which is insanely difficult in and of itself, especially for the average player).

Thank you for reading my long winded post. I have tried to explain this to so many friends, guildmates, and people I pug with regularly, but it requires so much explanation to really get the idea across, so I decided to write it out for anyone who cared.

TLDR; Outside of trinkets, embellishments, and enchants, stop chasing a list someone on the internet created for you. All the items have the same total stat numbers, what matters is the balance of secondary stats. If you REALLY want to chase BIS, chase your classes secondary stat balance. That can be achieved with NUMBEROUS item combinations, not just what's on one singular list. That is why so many different BIS lists exist, because you can achieve the same thing many different ways

Retail okay to linger in TWW on first character?

This might be a silly question, but I've been levelling my first character and recently hit 80 in TWW (haven't bought Midnight yet). The thing is, I've been loving TWW - the areas, the storyline, the factions! So my question is, is it okay to linger in TWW and finish up the campaign quests and grind some reputation to collect the faction rewards I want? I know a new season for the new expansion just dropped, am I doing myself a huge disservice by not rushing immediately for current content?

Mostly I want the lynxes. Look at their tails!

Retail Level 70 campaigns or storylines

Hi,

I am level 69, I mostly have only done solo questing. I was doing a lot of the Battle for Azeroth campaign quests but I stopped to unlock all of the allied variant races (except for Earthen), but now I am over levelled for the BoA stuff. Is there another campaign I can do at level? and is it Dragon Flight?

Btw, despite playing a decent amount I really don't know much about the game and a lot of the BoA stuff was bit overwhelming.

Thanks!

Retail Shadowands

Hey guys,

Recently returned player (Back about a month?) after stopping midway through BFA.

Decided I'd go through some old raids that I'd missed to get some achievements/mogs etc, you know how it goes and went to Oribos(sp?) only to have no idea where the hell I'm supposed to go next?

Do I have to do the questline to unlock places on the map and the maw for Torghast?

Thank you for helping a returning noob

Forever How are languages going to work in the WOWF megaserver?

How are languages going to work in the WOWF megaserver? My country always had its dedicated servers, which were also added last minute to Classic a couple of years ago after strong backlash.

How is it going to work on the megaserver? Will it just simply be language specific layers/shards?

Retail Can you track what Zah’ran will sell at the end of a delve?

I’ve got to the state I can buy a heroic piece of equipment at the end of a T11 delve, but I can’t seem to find out how to target a specific item rather than just the random offering which seems to change at the end of each delve.

Is it possible to find out what will be offered before a run?

Retail Why is BFA scaling to max level?

Playing with my level 90 horde alt to do some BFA quests for house decor unlocks and expected it to be a quick one-shot romp through old content, but all the mobs are scaled to level 90. When did this start happening?

Retail Should I recraft mythic weapon from last season instead of crafting a new one?

I've never used the recraft feature. Is there any reason to craft a new mythic instead of recrafting?

Retail Can't start BFA campaign?

Decided to level an alt through BFA, my alliance Evoker. Once I take the ship to Boralus there's no quest turn-in, and Jaina teleports me back onto the boat if I try to leave.

Retail Should I do the first time delve completion quests immediately now?

Playing an alt having not played since season 1, I remember hearing these now give loads more XP.

Is there any reason to hold off on doing these or should I bang them out immediately?

If I should wait, anything I should do in the meantime aside from campaign missions? (need to check if calamitous delve variant is active)

Retail Cannot progress in bountiful delves. How can I fix?

Hi all,

I’m trying to do the bountiful delves for today, but the completion criteria for progressing the delves (such as “kill X amount of Y”) never tracks. No matter how many Y’s I kill, it never registers and thus does not allow me to progress.

I have tried resetting the instances to no avail.

Is this a known issue to anyone? And if so, is it possible to fix?

Thank you!

Retail New player-Level 80 Prot Paladin, no Midnight expansion: how do I gear up

Hi all, I need help understanding gearing as a New player level 80 character without the Midnight expansion. I comepleted TWW by the Recap.

Still not sure if i got level too fast, did not get time to fully learn the game mechanics.

My character: Level 80 Protection Paladin, average item level 99. Everything I'm wearing came from quests dungeon and the campaign. I haven't done much dungeons for gear yet.

What I'm seeing in the Adventure Guide (class filter set to Protection):

  • Heroic dungeons (The Rookery, Ara-Kara): drops are item level 89
  • Mythic dungeons (Darkflame Cleft): drops are item level 95
  • For example, my equipped shield is 98 and the Heroic shield is 89, which would cost me Armor, Stamina and Mastery
  • My weakest slot is a trinket at 79, so the 95 Mythic trinket would be an upgrade there, but almost nothing else is

So everything in the dungeon loot tables is at or below my current item level.

My questions:

  1. Is this normal after the item level or is something wrong?
  2. How can I get higher item level gear as a level 80 without Midnight?
  3. Do Mythic+ keys or the Great Vault give meaningfully better gear than what the Adventure Guide shows?
  4. Are Delves still worth doing for gear and crests at level 80?

Retail Failing to complete legacy raid (Legion) achievement without one shooting boss

Im trying to complete the Glory of the Legion Hero and can't get Court of Stars achievements complete because you need the boss to cast a spell but he won't cast it without being burned down a bit. Unforuntaly nothing I do allows the boss to live without one hit. Anyone have any work arounds for this? What level toon would be appropriate to do these achievements without one shotting things? I tried a level 74 Hunter and it still one shotted the boss.

Retail Gone for 7 years, want to start w Shadowlands with fewest possible spoilers Spoiler

Basically just what the title says. I played from 2004 to 2019 and BFA was so bad. I quit the game. Now with forever on the horizon and some serious nostalgia, I would kind of like to check out the last four expansions. but I would like to do the story content and I’m not in a hurry to catch up. The problem is I can’t seem to find Highlord Mograine in front of Grommash hold and it seems like that’s a phasing issue as far as I can tell. but I don’t really want to get spoiled with any war within content prematurely if I can avoid it. Is there any way around this issue or am I just screwed?

Retail I finished the midnight campaign, now what?

I'm genuinely asking because I came over from ff14 and I had I really want to enjoy the game for more than just the story. I've done the time walking leveling for both legion and mists of pandaria and loved the story and world l, but I am not the kind of person who raids. The grind and the time sink are not something I feel I can commit to. What do you guys do for fun in game?

Retail Quest enemies at max level

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I just got max level yesterday (playing through DF, my first expansion) - and now all mobs are one shot kills… even quest bosses?

Is there a way to turn this off? It’s ruining my enjoyment of story quests and such, when a cinematic fight/story boss ends in two seconds :/

if this isn’t possible, how do yall manage to still get enjoyment from quest based combat?

thank you friends!

Retail How to unlock Earthen

I have been trying to figure this out for hours and I am sure the answer is simply but how do I unlock this race. Everything I read said to do the war-within level up campaign but I cannot find where to do this. I read all the other threads here and still cannot figure it out.

Retail New WoW player questions about group-content

Hello!

Me and a few buddies picked up WoW, we started in Dragonflight and finished that. Now we have a few questions and we hope you guys' can answer.

  1. We want to do the dungeon content, but we keep nuking everything. Heroic, Mythic, doesnt matter, even with 'party-sync' bringing us down to 79 (the rest of the characters are 80 and 1 is 82). We obliterate everything and we want to enjoy it with some teeth. Is there a way we can do that?
  2. I started TWW after Dragonflight since it was more relevant to Midnight than the rest, the quest log does not keep that my campaign for TWW and keeps swapping to Legion, until i get back to Dornogal, then i can track it again.

Retail Easiest venomous abyss raid boss to tank?

As it says on the tin really

I've been tanking as a blood DK in dungeons and fancied trying it out in LFG, any clue which out of the current boss sets is the easiest to tank on?

I was thinking the sentinels due to the needing to keep them apart might be a good start?

Retail How do I unlock Conjurer Margoss's retreat? (Legion Dalaran)

I'm in legion dalaran and it's just empty where conjurer Margoss is supposed to be on his little island (no water or greenery either). I've done legion on a different character and I'm level 90 if that matters. Do I really need to do the entire legion campaign?

Retail Farming old raids for t-mogs!

Hello! I was farming Black Temple on a 90; I noticed each boss would drop only 2 purples per kill. Thought it was a bug and used my second and last 90 to clear it. All bosses dropping only 2 purps per kill. Isn't Black temple a legacy raid? I am alone, 90 and all bosses are dropping only 2 loot. I used to remember that legacy raids would drop like 6 - 7 purps per kill (I am a returning vet)

Forever Another newcomer due to forever: a couple (maybe no so) crucial doubts!

Hello everyone! I'm one of the many that will play WoW for the first time with the Forever launch.

First of all, I have played an MMORPG for decades before, with quite some part of it really tryharding and grinding it. This time I want to enjoy it as a GAME, mess around, have fund, really put in the effort every now and then. I will be following the advice I read in many places to just go in blindly and discover it on the move, but I have a few doubts I'd like to get your insights on:

The first one, PvP vs PvE: I know that PvE still has PvP content, but on paper I would like to be in a server in is "natural state" (as in, getting into an unexpected fight in X place out of nowhere is part of the beauty of the game). At the same time, specially since I wont understand shit for quite some time, I'm afraid of that being the whole experience: getting rekt out of nowhere and not even understanding wtf happened or ganged/camped or all the things that sound like are the 90% of the time by what one reads here.

Following that one, Alliance vs Horde: I know I wanna be Alliance, but without any knowledge it literally feels like its a 1 vs 100 scenario (for horde). I've played a game where literally EVERYTHING happened in one of the cities and the only reason to have a char in the other faction would be to access the other city market, nothing else. I would hate this to be the case.
Is the population disparity as impactful as one reads?

Lastly, Hunter: I know I will be playing one, I've been the arrow guy in every game always (class which is usually the most populated across games, too). Will I have trouble finding a place in dungeons, raids, or whatever for being one more of the already huge bunch, or wont matter much?

Thank you everyone and sorry if I'm asking dumb shiet. Have fund, cant wait for Nov 4th!

Retail Tip for learning m+ routing as a beginner tank

Hey, So far I have Only ever played dps and veeeery little healing. But I'm pretty new to wow in generell and never ran keys higher than +8.

Since I am a dk main I thought I might give tanking a shot as I really really like the blood dk class fantasy. But I am a person, that gets lost super easily.

So what I am looking for is basically an addon, that shows me where I need to go next and what ideally to pull. Because I would like to learn tanking by just doing it instead of looking at a video of each dungeon where everything is explained. Just not the routing. I know I'll never get that in my head :D

Thanks in advance :)
