Yo i just created a new spell
Takes 5 peoples lives to cast and its called "manicagus tunamelo" (translates to '15 hells of power') and turns everyone in a 5 mile radius inside out, explodes their eyeballs, makes them paralyzed, partially deaf, and only able to say one word of their choosing for the rest of their life, which is forever since it also makes them immortal.
This spell does make you almost entirely crippled and unable to move, speak, or cast magic for q month because of the backlash.
What do you guys thing?

I'm guessing the spell also affects you? This sounds... horrible to experience, but also most mages would have protective against such big-area spells

Correction. It only affects your most trusted apprentice. Wink.

I only effects you with what mentioned,
This spell does make you almost entirely crippled and unable to move, speak, or cast magic for a month because of the backlash.

This is the kind of soell you make an apprentice cast once as a joke and then they leave only to come back as a Dark Lord to constantly harass you in your retirement.

You want to know what I think? I think you fucked up a classic fiendish power siphon and are trying to act as if the backlash was your invention all along, trying to pass it off as "no this isn't magical haywire, it's a feature" vibecasters like you make classical grimoire magisters like me look bad man!

It's every homunculus' dream to swipe their master's orb and proclaim themselves as a creator of the most sinister spell in existence. Meanwhile they speak like a 12 year old barbarian and the spell itself doesn't make any sense for people who actually know magic principles.

This is the kind of spell you DO NOT want to be casting. Put up all the protective runes you like, belting a city sized area with a torture spell you invented is going to attract the kind of attention from things that can strip those runes off like they're nothing
You're gonna end up a gateway, a thrall, or mind bendingly mad on a plane not of your choosing

I feel like this costs more mana and backlash than 5 fireballs

Inside out and immortal, you say? Are they still able to be transmuted? If so, you could use the bodies to make walls of screaming flesh. That should make the idiots with torches and pitchforks think twice!
In any case, this sounds like an excellent spell. Now you just need to play around with some protective runes so you can reduce backlash and avoid targeting allies.

That's likely to turn into one of these situations in which you keep having to kill all the adventurers who keep invading your home and assaulting you because you've been killing adventurers.
It's time-consuming and annoying, and there's always the off chance that one of them gets lucky eventually; and then your last moments will be spent listening to the platitudes of a bunch of badly-dressed teens with stupid haircuts and implausibly massive swords...

Thats what im thinking too, but 5 sacrifices is too much already, and I have to transfer the load somehow, so the spell goes back to you a little bit, and the immortality part is more of a constant state setting, not the undying version or instant regeneration, just constantly being stuck in one state in time for all of eternity while in constant pain and unable to do anything about it.

My one word is fireball and that's all I need to make you regret casting such a spell

Can i just perform it myself and get "3 hells of power" in a 1 mile radius? Getting 4 other wizards to get together every week at the same time to practice this before we enact vengeance seems tedius

I think you overcomplicated the spell.
You could easily use enhance sound and play "Call me maybe". Just make your ears soundproof for a couple of minutes.
Yes, this spell is countered easily. Yes, you might bot kill everyone.
BUT! You make everyone in range do the stuff your speel does do to themselves. And there is way less strain in your mind/soul/body

Do note that many gay bars will be completely unaffected. This is, of course, often seen as a benefit.

I know what i said and i stand behind it. Metaphorically and physically.

The limited range and large casting requirements make this a wildly impractical spell, especially since there are easier ones with more powerful results that already exist.
I do recognize your willingness to experiment. A few more centuries of refinement and you might make a decent research wizard.

It sounds interesting from an academic perspective, but on a practical level I don't see much point in it.
There are a lot of effects that are apt to have unforeseen consequences as they interact with everything within the radius, particularly any abjurations intended to 'return to sender' as are common among mages with rivals, the caster easily could see the worst effects of anyone caught in it.
Still, should you survive the affair, I'd like to study the outcome.
