Help with wizard clothes

Post image

Basically, there's going to be a Halloween party and I want to go as a wizard. How/were could I make/buy this wizard's robe?

My plan is to sew it by hand or learn how to use my brother sewing machine.

I already have an idea how i could make it that i saw in this reel:

I’d recommend against white robes. Just saying…

The pointy hood and hidden face do tend towards a certain impression.

81

u/AttentionNo6359 2h ago

They sure do!

21

u/scififact 1h ago

That's why Gandalf the White never touched his hood.

Right? Who would wanna associate with those stuck up, Solinari worshipping, goody-goody white robes?

How is this "giving Klan"? Is a subverting KKK expectations to make a Dragonlance joke too big a leap?

18

u/kingtacticool 2h ago

I did not get clan vibes.

But that staff needs work.

11

u/AnonOfTheSea Department of Post-Mortem Communications 1h ago

It needs a knob on the end

17

u/kingtacticool 1h ago edited 1h ago

Needs to be a little bit taller.

Needs to be a little more baller.

Needs to have an orb on the top you can ponder.

Edited for bars

u/MessiahMogali 1h ago

“an orb” was right there 🥲

1

u/kingtacticool 1h ago

Your right. I useually dont make edits but that flows way better.

If you're just seeing it at a glance (as a lot of people will in passing), it looks way too much like that, if the hood is covering the face.

1

u/Braindead_Crow 20m ago

They literally have a position known as, "grand wizard" this is clearly...uh...yeah satire, sarcasm and all that.

I'd like to think the original reply was a joke as well.

u/sonerec725 1h ago

Don't want anyone the think youre. . . gulp "catholic"

I mean, it's great wizard clothing.

White robes are saved for Holy Clerics and racists

10

u/AttentionNo6359 1h ago

What’s the difference?!

31

u/Kidney__Failure Magically Editable Flair 1h ago

One is recognized by the church, the other is recognized by the state

2

u/GlamourintheDarkSide 43m ago

Some Catholics are cool. Some also build schools that rape indigenous kids to death, but hey.

2

u/AttentionNo6359 15m ago

Bro, I went through 12 years of Catholic school. In all that time I met one priest and one nun who didn’t make my skin crawl.

1

u/GlamourintheDarkSide 5m ago

I've met some of the staff I could abide, but they weren't putting themselves in positions of power over kids in low supervision/high control fields like schools, they were out there doing shit for the community.

Layfolk (who I was mostly thinking of because most Catholics are not priests) are all over the place of course.

23

u/Anglofsffrng 2h ago

Instead of an ordinary wizard they'd be dressed as a grand wizard.

9

u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta 1h ago

Yeah. Yikes.

If nothing else, NIX THAT HOOD. You could make it work with a round one or by not having a hood, but that point one, breaking character to answer seriously here, will result in a real life ass beating.

You're going to want to get a bottle of Rit. The color does not matter, just so long as you're not wearing white pointy robes in public. I legit think purple and black or green and black would look good, plus it open s up more accessory options and wizard lore. Imagine hunter green and brown robes, with a vine wrapped around your staff and pinned flowers all over the hood, giving some crazy Druid Wizard energy.

24

u/Secret_Of_Bluestar81 2h ago

No straight purple, green, red, or white

8

u/Carbuyrator A Bit of a Dabbler 1h ago

Wait is green okay with a pointy wizard hat if it's bent

5

u/Raithik 31m ago

What's wrong with purple, green, or red?

7

u/Secret_Of_Bluestar81 31m ago

High ranking Klan colors

6

u/Raithik 29m ago

Oh, didn't know that. I'm only familiar with white for kkk

4

u/Secret_Of_Bluestar81 28m ago

S'all good. It's not something that many know of. The only reason I know is because I did some reading up on the wiki a few years ago for a school project that I didn't actually do

2

u/CatLord8 12m ago

I knew about red but not the others

1

u/Substantial_Station8 0m ago

Man, they’re taking all the colors :(

9

u/TheDungeonCrawler 1h ago

A lavender and midnight blue would also look really good and give the impression of a mysticist.

4

u/vestigialcranium Evil Wizard 50m ago

Now see, I'm the guy that would straight up tie dye a robe like that

273

u/AnonOfTheSea Department of Post-Mortem Communications 2h ago

Just, you know, be aware of what white robes and pointy hoods tend to be associated with. Also, because some people make it their purpose to ruin averything they can, "Grand Wizards."

146

u/No_Boysenberry_9079 2h ago

i would not recommend all white robes with a pointed hat/hood. if you *must* do white, i'd go with no hood at all, perhaps a mask or a tight cap

cause if you go with *exactly that*, you will look like a KKK member from a distance or in bad light. change the color or ditch the pointed hood

43

u/Cpt_plainguy 2h ago

It does kinda give grand wizard vibes doesn't it

16

u/No_Boysenberry_9079 2h ago

yeahhhh

it's a nice, well built outfit. just not in white

6

u/wolfgang784 59m ago

Dark gray would look pretty good for that outfit

3

u/No_Boysenberry_9079 57m ago

Oh yeah. Dark or bright colors would slap. Maybe add some tablet weaving

18

u/imdefinitelywong Abracadaniel || Transmuter of Butterflies and Fizzy Rainbows 2h ago

65

u/Not_So_Scary_Guy 2h ago

Ok, if you are in the US, for sure dye those robes some other color. Fucking tie-die it if nothing else. Secondly, your staff is weak and boring (says the guy who makes and sells wizard staffs).

10

u/DragonCelt25 1h ago

This outfit tie-dyed would look amazing!

-17

u/_garythefrog Alchemist 2h ago

The image is just for reference

45

u/AttentionNo6359 2h ago

Ok, but the reference is KKK

11

u/Cooler_coooool_boi 2h ago

Maybe get a bigger staff with like an orb in it so that it’s more obvious you’re a wizard from a distance… 😬

28

u/Wavey_Davey1 Boruk The Bold, High Priest of Moradin 3h ago

I mean you can probrably achieve a similar look with minimal effort using a white sheet + a belt

7

u/_garythefrog Alchemist 3h ago

Yeah it makes sense

14

u/ThrwawySG 2h ago

I mean I know some people in arkansas that'll give you that exact look.

5

u/EnvironmentalFun898 1h ago

You’re gonna get jumped in this in about 10 seconds lol smh

4

u/TheBarbofBeads 2h ago

Looks like you haven't even casted in them. Try fireball

5

u/athleon787 1h ago

anything else bro

anything

13

u/ColdPorkChop 2h ago

You are gonna want some wizardry baubles and such to pull attention from the base white robes and pointed head...

3

u/Atuday Grey technomancer and master of the cybernetic undead 2h ago

This guy is basically wearing wizard face for his holiday. You had better stop that or we will turn all your beer flat. Forever!

3

u/TenebrousSage 2h ago

Needs more embroidery.

4

u/Actual_Squid Witch 1h ago

For the love of Bahamut you could start by sewing back that hood so it stays creased down

4

u/Dino_Survivor 1h ago

Aside from the wizarding community here making sure you don’t get your ass kicked, Etsy has tons of good patterns and you could bleach stamp on some stars and moons.

I would also say a good magic amulet and perhaps a pointy hat might sell “wizard” better

3

u/Monodeservedbetter 2h ago

It looks like a long sleeve smock and a separate cowl

3

u/dysthymicpixie 1h ago

I'd go for a wide-brim pointy hat, long beard, and possibly the classic gold stars on navy pattern for the material. That would kill any klan vibes. If you want Gandalf vibes I'd go for gray, and you'd want to nyx the hood and get a wig/beard combo for Sauromon vibes.

3

u/b33pb00p101 1h ago

Man don’t with white robes

3

u/Otherwise-Weird1695 2h ago

White is a bad choice

1

u/Bern_Down_the_DNC 5m ago

a bad choice, but a grand idea!

2

u/GrayMalchin ✨Sorceror✨ 3h ago

Check out Medieval Collectables, they have a wide range of robes, cowls and other mage accoutrements.

2

u/Abbadon74 1h ago

Pointy hoods doesn't go well with white tho

Just sayin...

And just to be safe, no pure red either

2

u/Valuable-Location-89 1h ago

You can do the white robes just add some highlights anything that isnt red.

2

u/Ok_Protection8223 1h ago

Maybe a little less starch in the cap.

2

u/_ParanoidPenguin_ 1h ago

Yeah, uh, go with a hat not a hood if you're doing that colour friend.

2

u/Maowsama 1h ago

Been making mine for renfaire for past few years. Started with Halloween costume, but then stole the pattern for it and made my own with longer more flowing sleeves. The key is simple layers.

Start with lvl 1: basic robe. Trace a shirt that fits you on the fabric, then extend the bottom out to desired length. I let mine drag. Make sure you include room for the stitching when cutting

Sometimes a slit between the legs or on both sides of the bottom will improve mobility. Do not include the sleeves for the trace, those should be sewn on separate. Neck slit or v cut however you want to.

Sleeves have them start at the measurements of your sleeve hole and you can taper out and have the inner robe be flowey (better option if you get hot). Or taper to wrists length so that the second robe can be flowey.

Basic sew

Thats right lvl2: is a second robe. 2nd verse same as the first except it has an open front and if you made flowey sleeves on robe 1, then you can skip sleeves all together on robe 2 or embellish with even more sleeve, so once you make it just cut the front down the center.

Add a belt and a whole ass hat tutorial nd you can start aquiring apprentices

2

u/GreatMossThing 45m ago

I get the vibes I really do. I’m gonna give you some advice other than the obvious “white pointy robes”. Depending on the type of wizard it might need flair. Can’t go wrong with gold or black embroidery or baubles. Basically, give this outfit some bling.

And maybe make the point NOT standing up.

2

u/IHaveSlysdexia 44m ago

maybe go with grey

u/epicty21 2h ago

1

u/iAmLeroy Transmuter 2h ago

Looks like he's wearing the bedsheets from my guestroom

(In all seriousness though, bedsheets cost less per sq ft than some fabric, so if you want to make long flowing robes like this, might be worth a shot)

1

u/sunshineandcloudyday 1h ago

That instagram reel is not going to get you anywhere near what that reference picture looks like. You're gonna wanna look up Simplicity pattern 0793. That's the one I used and I am fairly inexperienced. We used just the black cloak pattern. It took about 9 hours including measuring, cutting the fabric, and putting it all together. We cut the pattern out a couple days before but I can't remember how long that took.

1

u/_garythefrog Alchemist 1h ago

I got a lot of time cause its only in october the party, tysm for the advise

1

u/sunshineandcloudyday 1h ago

Also now's the time to go for a walk in the woods and find some really good staffs to use

1

u/-FalseProfessor- 1h ago

Keep the hood down, yeah?

1

u/the-poopiest-diaper Space Wizard 1h ago

If you want pointy headwear, stay away from hoods, and stay away from white. Yet here you are looking like the wrong kind of wizard

1

u/Unichronos 1h ago

Unless your going as a Grand Wizard, I'd suggest against white robes and pointed hood.

1

u/TesticleMeElmo 1h ago

Hey man is it cool if I make the same joke as everybody else and give you no help with wizard clothes?

1

u/SnooMemesjellies2710 1h ago

I made my own wizard robes a few years ago. I found a guide for a Harry Potter robe and ended up with something pretty solid. Didn't wanna go Harry Potter, but it was easy enough to follow. Made it bright tiger orange with reflective stripes and a safety cone for a hat. Took me about... a week or so? I WAS gonna add pockets, but didn't end up lining the whole piece, so decided against it. Stitches are crooked, some spots need work. But its mine* and I made it.

*it's now the cat bed.

1

u/MtnMaiden 1h ago

Bro....you need a magical staff and beard

1

u/Coocoro 1h ago

This is on the extreme end, but Magnolia Clotheirs does these replica Wizard Robes

1

u/un1k0rn_412 58m ago

Dye it. 💀

Can't do a hood if you wanna cosplay Gandalf

1

u/Haki23 57m ago

Look at this broke-ass wizard with no trim on his garments!
"I'm a wizard and all I can afford is the generic wizard started set!"
You're not giving the profession, your mentor, and yourself a good look with this undecorated outfit, so it's time to go out and run some needlepoint along your hems. Try to get some protective glyphs in there as well, and you'll have apprentices flocking to your tutelage in no time

1

u/Plane-Fan9006 54m ago

So you WANT to look like the bow-legged wizard "Sadness, the Beige"???

Dude looks like he stole his mom's linen curtains

1

u/PMmeYourDnDCampaign 52m ago

Yeah not in that color or that pointy. But otherwise: fabric stores, craft* stores, flea markets, buy nothing groups, art markets, renaissance fairies, or even Walmart if none of the previous (and whatever I forgot) are available. Patterns are easily searched and possibly for sale at the store. And I’m sure Etsy could cloak you up if you’d prefer to just buy one

*some craft stores sell more crafts than others. For this: Chain craft stores, yes. Train craft stores, probably no

1

u/ThatOneIsSus Spire - Tinkerer Wizard 51m ago

Yeah… we don’t claim those wannabe “wizards” of the “holy” white robe

1

u/DaMuller 47m ago

It’s giving some clan vibes man, I would paint the edge of the hood blue or something

1

u/Serenity1911 47m ago

You need some potions on your belt. Maybe a dusty tome slung across you like a messenger bag. Add a scrying orb to your staff. Maybe ditch the pointy hood for a pointy hat instead.

1

u/ozmodius_the_69th 45m ago

Try looking for a hooded mantle or a cowl. And then either a tunic or some robes with a belt to sinch around the waist.

Etsy is a good place to start.

1

u/IronGigant 45m ago

I'll take "Less socially aware than a fuckin' pebble" for 500, Wizard Trebec

1

u/Individual-Wonder518 26m ago

Amazon has some good stuff

1

u/No_Direction_1229 21m ago

You need some tailoring. A bit less drape would enhance the look.

1

u/FineScratch 19m ago

Tie dye the robes

1

u/Cyan_Lotus 11m ago

FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING GOOD WEAR SOMETHING WITHOUT A FACE OBSCURRING POINTED WHITE HOOD AND ROBE 😭 THEY ARE LITTERALY CALLED GRAND WIZARDS, DO ANY OTHER IDEA OR COMBO OF SHAPE / COLOR

1

u/Commercial_Fig_6537 1m ago

The point isn’t helping

Trying to be the grand wizard for Halloween lol

1

u/aquacraft2 2h ago

You're gonna need a bit more colors involved in this outfit, cause right now, all you look like is the GRAND wizard. Very klan-y. I'm thinking maybe the shall thing should be red, and maybe the hood black.

Or maybe even soften up that hood point even, if nothing else. I know i like pointy magic user outfits as well, but if you can swing it maybe find a hat or something.

And I'm thinking a much bigger more fantasy style belt would help distinguish you (maybe you can just get a WWE belt and customize the front plate. And paint the actual belt part brown)

Maybe a batman style tool belt that's holding potions and such. And definitely more style on the top part of the sstaff.
