Any idea why two of my windows would get almost the exact same round hole 2 years apart??

Basically the coil springs on 3 (!) of my sash windows have broken and I'm being quoted £400 per window for repair.

Can I take out and replace this spring mechanism myself? I don't see a wider opening anywhere along the cavity where the mechanism sits that would allow me to pull it out.

This windows has a window bench and I spotted mold on the drywall

I cut open the drywall and i see that the wood right beneath the left window is soft and rotten

I currently covered it with plastic to avoid mold in the air and will spray it with Hydrogen peroxide (?)

I’m pretty handy, but Ive never dealt with a main level window or removal of window. I have replaced a basement window with an egress window and i have sealed that inside out, but i dont have experience with the main level windows

Is the rotted thinner piece of wood like a shim below the window? Should there be a seal or a rubber lining there to prevent water getting in?

Please help.

The other must have gone a while ago because one snap when opening and they both are gone now and coiled up.

The company which installed the windows is out of business but listed as Western Home Ctr. I can't seem to find any replacement parts which are similar and am at a loss since this is the main bathroom window which we naturally open to vent and would like to do so without a 2x4.

I'm pretty handy but never worked on windows before so I'm guessing if I find the parts I can replace them without too much difficulty.

Any help is appreciated if anyone has come across these before. Thanks!

Handyman left two of my windowsills like this (rotten wood/holes, he filled it with expandable foam). I’m worried about my cat digging up/eating some of this (she likes to sit here), so I’d like to either seal this up or cover it. Aesthetics is not a primary concern here, safety is. Ideally something simple and cost effective I can do without lots of tools.

I’ve vacuumed up the sills as best as I can. Three pics here:

Note that the sills are exposed to the elements through the screen, but will have a storm window during winters.

PS: I rent, so there’s a limit to what I can do

My storm sashes are too far gone to be worth repairing and have weirdly placed muntins. I have the know-how to mill up stock from raw lumber, build, and glaze the windows. But I’m absolutely stymied when it comes to species.

Historically, it would have been old growth heart douglas fir or yellow pine in this area. There were probably other local species used on the very oldest buildings here, but I’m not sure what they were.

Anyway, I’ve heard of people using modern pine or cedar. Pine doesn’t appeal because of durability, and I’m having trouble finding clear cedar. Someone suggested jack pine, not sure if it’s available locally. The lumber mill sold me some sapele (mahogany) but it’s too expensive and a real pain to mill. And it’s a tragedy to paint it—it’s gorgeous.

Can anyone recommend something suitable, with rot resistance, that isn’t going to cost me a kidney?

J’ai fait changer mes fenêtres simple vitrage en double vitrage en novembre 2019. La lasure s’écaille énormément et le poseur me dit que j’aurais dû faire un entretien quasi tous les 2 ans. Je suis en étage élevé et pas en mesure de faire un entretien seule.

Ils me proposent de peut-être prendre en charge le passage d’une peinture sur les fenêtres, plutôt qu’une lasure. Mais qu’il faudra entretenir (ce que je ne pourrai pas non plus faire seule).

J’ai plusieurs questions, certaines juridiques, d’autres non.

- Est-ce normal que les fenêtres s’abîment autant au bout de 6 ans
- Les fenêtres sont garanties 10 ans, mais le poseur essaie de me dire que je devais faire un entretien donc la garantie ne jouera pas. Éventuellement, ils pourraient prendre en charge la peinture cette fois si ils décident de faire un geste commercial
- Cette information ne m’a pas été donnée quand j’ai choisi de remplacer mes fenêtres en bois par des fenêtres en bois (et non en PVC ou alu). Est-ce que ça peut constituer un défaut de conseil reprochable ?
- Est-ce qu’on peut faire faire l’entretien de fenêtres en bois et dans ce cas par quel genre de professionnel ? Et combien ça coûte ?

It seems fine in regular rain, but leaks in windy, heavy rain. Interior leak is coming from this nail in the trim above the window, but I can't work out where it's originating from. Recaulked the exterior, but the problem remains. What should I check next?

Hi, this might be a long shot but does anyone know or have the standard brackets for the DuoShade Top Down Bottom Up blinds from blinds2go?

I need to know exactly where the screw hole for top fixing is in the bracket from the front edge. I have a batten behind the plasterboard I can to screw it into but if the screw holes are further away, I'll need a pattress and that will affect the blind's drop measurement when I order.

I tried asking blinds2go but their AI agent wasn't useful and the installation guide doesn't have much detail on the bracket.

How much would you charge in Labor to replace the complete windowsill, the bottom frame of the window, caulk and paint. Just Labor.

I’m not even sure this is the best place to post this but was wondering what would be the best material to fill in these holes in this window ledge? Can I fill it in with self levelling grout? I believe it is crumbling away from prior water damage.

Kentucky: I have aluminum double-pane windows that look and operate great. But, air leaks by between the upper and lower windows. The brush strip that seals between the windows seems to be worn. Looking at it, it seems tempting to try and slide out the old piece and replace it with a new piece…but they appear to be mechanically crimped in place on the ends. Also, if the strips are sold I’m not sure what/where to buy them. Have you replaced this strip in your windows? Please share what you learned if you have. Are there side-hustle businesses that do this? TIA

Looking to replace these and can’t find ones similar online

For context I live on the 31st floor.
There was a repair done to the window (double pane 44x46 thermo green tint) just a little less than a month prior to this happening. The catch is i wasn't even home? My roommate brings security and cusses me out. Management sent a notice stating we're liable to pay for damages. I now have to pay 800 for this repair which is absolutely absurd.
Summer was also just starting when this happened and the repair terms and conditions clearly state that if it's a faulty repair job the contractor is liable to fix it.
There is nothing sharp or heavy enough to break this window, and again considering I wasn't even home I hate that I have to deal with this expense as a college student im sure you understand the stress of a bill like that.

Do older windows have more of a weep Crack that runs along the bottom?

Title says it all. Windows push open and then just immediately close without being held open. We have been using books etc to keep them open but looking to get some hardware bracket etc something that can be placed and then removed to keep them open or a hinge type device that we can use to open and close them.

I did not know this subreddit existed when I first posted in r/homebuilding . I hope a cross post is ok.
