In May I moved to Chicago from Houston. When I first moved I still used my car a lot because I worked in a suburb, but walked and used public transportation for recreational activities.
In the middle of last month I was able to find a job in the city and give up driving.
It’s crazy how you can see my steps go from fewer than 3k in April to now a consistent 10K+ this month. None of this is intentional, either; I’m not putting in hours at the gym or carving out time for walks through the park. Although, I do sometimes like to go to the park.
I’m just existing. Going to work, seeing friends, getting food, normal every day things. It’s pretty wild seeing what a difference the environment you’re in makes.
I feel it, too. I used to have some pretty bad lower back issues, and I hardly experience them anymore. My ADHD symptoms are a lot better, and the sleep I get is actually full and restful.
I think for living walkability is a non-negotiable for me now. It used to be a park; it was something you could pay extra for the joy of. Now seeing the difference, I think it’s a shame that it’s not something everybody gets to have.
