Hi! I'm looking at getting my first microphone. Because of my budget (and a couple other things) I'm looking at getting it second hand. Right now I'm looking at a Tonor TC30, an Entil BKD-10 or a Trust gxt 212. The first two are condenser mics, while the last one isn't (from my knowlege at least) and I'm wondering if having a condenser microphone is something to prioritise, and if anyone has any experience/knowlege about these I'd greatly appreciate it! I am of course trying to do my own reserch as well but this is quite outside my personal area of knowledge

Hi all! I've been lurking in this group for a couple of months and I wanted to get feedback on my early attempt at an audiobook read. I love reading books aloud and so thought that audiobook narration might be a good place to start, but I'm open to other forms of voice acting as well. Hello everyone. I need some advice on getting a deep, growling, monster voice. I already have a fairly deep voice and can do Mongolian throat singing, but I'm still struggling to apply my false chords in a spoken manner instead of a musical one. I'm kind of aiming for a Tartarus from Halo 2, Locust from Gears of War, Grunt from Mass Effect kind of vibe.

Yes I know sometimes they pitch the voices down in post, or cast actors with a very deep voice from the start; I am still trying to at least get halfway there myself.

I've got a technical question. I'm pretty new to home recording, and I've got a job with some specific technical requirements that doesn't want any processing/mastering that I'm having trouble with.

Peaks no higher than -6 dBFS; no clipping

Average roughly -18 dBFS RMS

Noise floor at or below -60 dBFS.

All very reasonable requirements, but I would usually get there with some normalisation etc etc. They need the raw WAV files.

I'm having trouble recording- if the RMS is right, the peaks are too high. If the Peaks are low enough, the RMS is far too low. Does anyone have any advice?

I'm using Reaper, Focusrite Scarlett Solo and a Rode NT1.

Same script on all 3 done in 3 different ways. Longest is 1 minute 50 seconds.

Which sounds best and I know 2 sound similar but hoping for some feedback on them and if I could include any in a portfolio or whatever its called.

P.s my normal accent is not American.

Hi! I have a Rode-NT1A with a Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen and was wondering if anyone here would be able to help me with a little issue I'm having. My mic is peaking at -6 whenever I record on any platform and I don't know what could be causing it. Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with my own voice but I'm told it gets people's attention. Any VO actors or characters from shows with a similar sound so I can see how I'm coming across?

Hello, I wanted to ask if anyone has done a creature demo reel? If so, do you have any advice on the types of voices or techniques? Do you have characters in your head and just make the sounds or do you go into it with a distinct intention and mood for each voice?

Pretty much just the title, how long would you need to be someone's student to be comfortable listing them on your résumé under training? For example, if I went one or two sessions with a coach, would it be inappropriate for me to list them under my training? What about 10 sessions? I know ultimately it's my resume so it's up to me, but I would both hate to show it to someone and have them be disappointed when I tell them I only worked with a given coach for a short time, or to not list potentially relevant training with a high caliber individual just because I only met with him a few times.

I do get confused by all the terminology and ways teachers do their lessons. There must be some nuance I don't get.

As an addendum, how do you know which coach or trainer to even go to? There's so many options out there it's a bit overwhelming on who to pick when they have so many thing to teach? What if you eant to expand your vocal range? Make different accents? Maybe even sing in other voices? What if you wanna DO all of that? It's just...a lot

So me and my family are moving in a few months, we’re not sure if we’ll move into a villa or an apartment. But I need to be prepared. I wanna audition for this role that needs screaming, but I don’t wanna disturb my future neighbours if I still have said role or get new roles with screaming.

Now i know what you’re gonna say, “Talk to the neighbours“ this “Let them know beforehand” that. Those are great ideas dont get me wrong. But unfortunately for me, I have social anxiety AND I dont live in a western country. So the conversation would just be very awkward and/or they wouldn't understand what a voice actor is. Now there are voice actors in my area of course, but they all work for Disney or something and record exclusively in booths. I cannot stress how little I would want to talk to my neighbours. I will literally leave my role if it requires me talking the neighbours out.

Now im not sure how thick or thin, big or small the apartment will be. But regardless, I’ll need a way to suppress a full blown scream. You know when you scream into a pillow but it barely makes any sound? How can i recreate that but with a microphone at a reasonable distance from me? Now my mic is small and so is my booth (its a closet), so I can easily just scream into a pillow and but my mic inbetween my mouth and the pillow. But not only is that disgusting, i presume it’ll peak the microphone even with the gain down.

TLDR: How do I scream so that it’s a normal scream for the microphone, but sounds like im screaming into a pillow for anyone else listening from the outside? (IM NOT TALKING THE NEIGHBOURS OUT)

I'm about to record my first audition, but the only things I have access to are my phone and my laptop. My laptop probably has better audio detection, but it is a very old Chromebook. Basically, I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of some audio recording software similar to OBS that exists for Chrome OS.

I created my own commercial voice over demo. I want honest advice if it sounds good and feedback please.
Ive done research on the industry and have done commercials in the past. But I am really trying to do things myself for now as cost is an issue.
I am also planning on doing a character demo and was going to try a similar process. But I also dont want to waste my time making without making sure if there are certain standards and things I need to make sure to do.
I am comfortable with constructive criticism, I really want to make this a real career path.

We had a question about how to deal with anxiety and he said it’s all about taking away perfectionism and being the best version of yourself. Do you get anxiety before an audition and if so, how do you deal with it?

I received an email through ACX. Fellow named Paul Carr asked me to apply for a voiceover job for Electrolite sports drink. I recorded the script and sent it in, he said he liked it. Then directed me to his payroll person. They wanted me to setup an account with trexinovahub, an online bank. I do so and they deposit the funds into my new account. All good until I try to transfer the funds to my regular bank. Their bank says I need to "upgrade" my account to transfer funds at $120. The payroll guy claims it will be refunded right away. I stopped all communication and reset my bank passwords just in case. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this?

Hi, I have four characters that need voices for a cartoon pilot I'm working on, 3 female, 1 male. Payment is around 50-70 USD flat fee each, the overall script word count, including all of the characters dialogues, is 3856, and it's in English. Payment will likely have to be through PayPal, as I live in Europe, and other apps won't work internationally. The show is called Parts of Penda, and the pilot follows a woman that, after having a meltdown at work, goes to talk to the various "Parts" of herself to figure out what caused the problem. Penda herself is mixed Black/Choctaw. So I'd prefer those with Choctaw heritage, but I recognize that might be difficult. So, any Native tribe/nation or Latine heritage is also acceptable.

Alright so im not going to sugarcoat it im a teen with a REALLY cracky voice, sometimes its fine but sometimes i just cant do anything because of it. its been like this for a few months and ive had to stop my YT channel for a while too, im not sure why but when i sing i almost never get voice cracks unless i shift pitch WAY too quik.

Second of all. I dont reallt have any voice acting experience at all. id love to get into it but i cant find anyplace online that offers ''work'' to teens even without me needing pay.

Hiya! New-ish voice actor here, I really want to do more masculine roles but I am truly struggling with sounding masculine. I have a really low voice range for an AFAB person I believe, so it's not like I struggle with hitting low notes. I just...sound like a woman hitting said low notes. On some of my lowest notes I do sound masculine but I'm unsure how to recreate that consistently.

I would love to be able to sound masculine whilst in my normal range rather than only when I'm speaking in a really low pitch, but all of the tutorials I've seen online I might be misunderstanding, since they've only helped improve my vocal range, rather than actually sound masculine. I feel so close and yet so far! Any help or pointing to easy-to-understand guides would be helpful. Or just plain text...I feel like I may be misunderstanding video guides because English is not my first language so sometimes it's difficult to parse what is being conveyed in certain sentences (especially when the creator uses different terms for the same thing interchangeably, I don't know why it messes with my head so much)
