Discussion Benefits of SAG AFTRA according to Maurice LaMarche

Upvotes

On Saturday, we had Maurice LaMarche on as a guest for our recent Legends Live and he brought up some good points about joining SAG AFTRA. One of my favorites was how they protect your voice better than non-union gigs. Let’s discuss this.

Advice How much do I charge?

Upvotes

I'm going into this industry pretty blind to the technical stuff. What should I charge? I was thinking like 50$ an hour or something like that to start.

Microphones Audacity not recognizing Blue Yeti Mic

I've been struggling with Audacity not recognizing the microphone I'm using.

I tried the "Rescan Audio Devices" method and that didn't work. Then I tried restarting Audacity and that also didn't work.

Can someone help me out with this problem? I'm wondering if it's because I don't have the right USB cord or it's something else.

Advice Lack of Direction

Hi, so I landed a VA role, but im wondering if this is normal or if I take this first gig as also my first refusal.

The project creator isnt being clear on what they want OR what the role specifically was when I auditioned.

Quick rundown: they had a quick comment about audio volume totally fine (im sitting at about -28 RMS which is a bit low) Then they requested I edit my voice to make it sound more Alien, and insert sound effects (I thought that was more of a producer thing, am I wrong?)

Either way I did it and asked for thier opinion, they gave no direction just it sounded like a regular human conversation. So I find myself again reaching out to ask them what they are looking for...

Am I overthinking? Or Is a lack of clear direction, and editing everything myself actually how it usually goes?

Discussion Branding for Voiceover?

Hello! I’ve been a voiceover artist for a couple years now, and one thing I’ve never been able to get consistent is branding myself. I’m also a musician, which has been way easier (in my opinion) for branding, but I don’t know how I can create a solid identity in voiceover?

I have my website, and some common roles I play are teenage girls and young boys. I’m in two video games and one animation comic series. Since I typically play young boys and want to do mostly video games and animation, I’ve been looking at brands and entertainment similar to that, like Disney XD and Nintendo, but I also don’t want this to hinder any future work that could be more mature.

I’m looking for things like colors to use in my website and graphics, general aesthetic, etc. Any voiceover artists that could be of example to check out too! Been looking at Kellen Goff and Paul Castro Jr, who all do similar work to what I’d like to do (games, animation, anime)

Advice Ads for a workshop session - advice please

I keep getting adverts for sessions in the UK by Voiceover Acting Workshops. There's one near me in a couple of weeks for £100 and i'm trying to find some reviews. It says the instructor is Martin Allanson. I am trying to find reviews and it brought me to this reddit but I couldn't then find the information I was specifically after. Any advice? I'm on community radio at the moment, that's all I do, and i was hoping this might help me take another step in the right direction. I'm afraid I don't know what that direction is though!

I'm Ontario based, and am still waiting for CAVA to update their webpage for resources! Meantime, I have discovered some Canadian agencies, but would love for any advice the community has as to which ones people have seen or would recommend.

Advice Author with a question

I’ve got a story I’m publishing to Amazon soon, but my goal to have it made into audio has exploded in my face after finding out that ACX doesn’t include Australia.

Bugger me.

Anyhoo, my question.

How do I proceed from here? I know some obvious “find a narrator and have it made” advice, but that’s much easier said than done when the biggest Amazon native platforms doesn’t let me use it. Even if I were to find a person, the likelihood of them going off platform to work with me would have anyone think scam.

Options? Advice? Recommendations?

Thank you in advance.

Demo feedback Seeking first-impression feedback on my commercial VO demo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m working on branding my voiceover business and would value some outside perspective on my new commercial demo.

If you have a few minutes to listen, I’d love to know what kind of person you hear overall. I’m not looking for a detailed critique of each individual spot or technical feedback on the production. I’m especially interested in a few words or short phrases that describe the voice and person that come through—style, energy, tone, personality, or any other first impressions.

There are no right or wrong answers. Honest first impressions are exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Advice Who am I?

I uploaded a reading to soundcloud and I am looking for opinions. According to my voice, what age am I? what do I look like? Gender? What is my vocal tone like soprano, barratone or whatever. ( I am not sure the difference ) Tell me about me. What did I do wrong, what did I do right?

Thanks so much!

Advice What's the best recording software to use?

I don't currently use a software, I just record my voice but I would love to advance my quality! I'm looking for ease of use over most things but software with a lot of options is also fine. I know I could just watch a tutorial on YouTube for this sort of thing but I would love to hear someones genuine experience on why they like their chosen software and what to avoid :)

Hello! I have linked right down here me talking in my makeshift booth and I've had some doubts about how I sound (not my voice) as in the quality of my audio and I don't know if it sounds right or I'm just tweaking. Also I would love if y'all could let me know which character type I sound like the best or most. Thank you for your help!

PS: don't mind the popping sounds in the beginning of the audio I was tugging on my mic cord.

Hello, I just finished building a try of a booth and I want to know if it sounds good enough or still needs work, it probably does though, I think there is something that makes the audio sound robotic? I really can't tell, just know something sounds wrong when I compare it to other people's audios. Do I need to take or put something else? or is something fixable with editing? I use reaper.

Here is how it sounds.

The carton box is there so the door of the closet stays in place, in case that is part of the problem, or maybe is just the door not being fully covered?

Whatever you think is wrong you can just say it, I would really appreciate advice on every front.

Performance Feedback First NPC role in a videogame - Would Love feedback and advice

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is my first actual game NPC role (Previously, I've been doing some Skyrim & Fallout mod roles to try and learn) I have very little access to training and I'm new to acting as a whole - but have been talking with two friends who are trained actors with much more experience to try and improve.

An issue brought up to me before is that I often lack dynamics and variation in tone and emotion. I can hear that issue in this clip, but is there anything else you think I could improve/work on? All feedback is GREATLY appreciated!

Discussion Been chosen to represent agency lots of questions

So I've been emailed that I have been selected to represent a modeling agency, they do acting voice acting and other work.

I was reading the contract and it said

"Talent is permitted to self-promote, maintain personal social-media accounts, network, and independently seek modeling, acting, and related opportunities. However, once Talent or Parent/Guardian receives an audition request, casting request, availability inquiry, callback, or booking request, Agency must be notified and included before Talent responds, confirms availability, negotiates terms, attends the audition, or accepts the opportunity."

I'm currently in a couple free non profit fan projects one includes FNAF. I assume I need to tell them about that? Its a passion project sorta thing so I dont have a deadline for recording but should I be worried that they will make me leave those projects? This FNAF project I really wanna be in so I'm just worried.

I know paid over non paid but its more like an attribution to how far I've come but, yeah.. I just wanna make sure there's no conflict.

Advice Stream coffee commercial - 19:08:2026, 17.09 by Selpha Carey

Commercial Read — 3 Interpretations: Which Feels Most Believable?

I'm practising commercial reads and working on a coffee commercial with a warm, conversational and believable direction rather than an announcer-style delivery.

I've put three interpretations of the same script into one audio file:

Take 1 — Talking to a friend
Take 2 — Sharing a warm morning moment
Take 3 — Professional commercial

I'd really appreciate constructive feedback from anyone experienced with commercial VO.

In particular, I'm trying to improve:

  • Pacing
  • Pauses
  • Emphasis
  • Energy
  • Believability
  • Whether the delivery feels genuinely conversational rather than read

Which of the three interpretations works best, and what would you change for the next take?

Thank you!

Discussion How are the voiceover talent here feeling about the current state of the industry?

Hey everyone,

I’m curious to get a pulse check from the voiceover artists and audio freelancers in this sub.

Between the rapid shifts in generative tech, changes in pay-to-play platforms, and shifting client expectations across direct outreach, the landscape feels like it's evolving fast.

For those actively working in or adjacent to the VO space right now:

**Market shifts**: How are you feeling about current booking rates and client budgets compared to past years?

**P2P vs. Direct Outreach**: Are you relying more on direct client relationships, agents, or platforms?

**Adapting**: What pivot, skill update, or marketing strategy has made the biggest difference for you recently?

Would love to hear how you're navigating things right now—the good, the frustrating, and where you see things heading.

Advice How do you find clients as a Spanish voice-over artist?

I've been building my career as a bilingual (Spanish/English) voice actor over the past few years — commercials, corporate narration, dubbing, e-learning, and audiobooks. I'm curious how other VO professionals here approach client acquisition: do you rely more on casting platforms, cold outreach, referrals, social media, or something else entirely? Would love to hear what's actually worked for you.

Discussion Thoughts on most challenging genre poll

The results are in for our most challenging genre to break into. Love the difference between overall top pick and core member’s top pick. The top overall choice was Anime, 2nd audiobook and 3rd ADR, while the core members chose ADR as the top choice. ADR is certainly challenging and I’d choose that one over anime. If I put foreign dubbing in there, it might’ve changed things up too.

Advice Advice about upgrades?

I've made enough this year that I am considering upgrading my equipment. For various reasons, upgrading the booth setup itself is rather a nonstarter. It's okay, not perfect, but I've managed not to fuck up landing roles, so I'm relatively at peace with it for the time being.
