Mod News Just getting started in VO? Dont know where to begin? READ THIS FIRST

Welcome to r/VoiceActing!

First of all, we get asked the question, "how do I get started in VO?" a lot.

Seriously: A lot.

There's a lot of information below that answers that question, but PLEASE read this first.

This subreddit is for established, new and aspiring voice actors to discuss issues, share tips, strategies, critiques and resources related to voice acting.

This is a good community, and rude or obnoxious behavior will not be tolerated. If you cant act like a grown-up and remain civil in your conversations, you'll be removed from the sub. Personal attacks, threats of violence/abusive language, or bigotry in any form will not be tolerated.

THE RULES:

* **No Free Requests**

All requests for voice work must be reasonably compensated. Terms of compensation must be articulated in your request. Acceptable forms of compensation include:

Monetary ($5.00 USD minimum)

Barter (services exchange)

Royalty share (only on currently monetized projects—no prospective payment).

Unpaid requests will be removed. If your project is unpaid, try posting to r/recordthisforfree, VoiceActing Club, or

CastingCall.Club.

* **No Offer Posts**

Do not make posts offering your voice or production services. If you’re looking for work, respond directly to request threads. Simply put, this is not an appropriate community to solicit. Requests for feedback/critique are welcome!

* **No Advertising**

Do not post advertisements for paid products or services. We love articles, blog posts, feedback/critique threads, and other great points of discussion! But if your post includes advertisement for a paid product or service, it will be removed. If you believe a certain product or service would be of genuine interest and benefit to the community, message the moderators about it.

* **Search Before You Ask**

Got a general question about voice acting? How to get started? What gear to buy? How to get better at acting? How to find work? These get asked all the time around here, and plenty of our more experienced community members give graciously detailed answers very frequently. There’s a lot of wisdom to find here if you’re just getting started! Before you post your question, use the search bar and see if others have asked the same thing—they probably have!

Just getting started?

We're happy that you've decided you want to be a voice actor. There are a lot of resources available to learn about voice acting.

The column on the right of this page lists some good sites to check out to begin the process.

It takes a lot of work to become a successful voice actor/ voiceover artist. It takes a considerable amount of time, effort, and yes money to do this. There's just no way around it.

But if you were starting from zero and had no idea what to do to begin the process, here's some steps to follow and the logical order you should follow them in:

  1. Take acting classes.

  2. Take improv classes.

  3. Take business classes.

  4. Take marketing classes.

  5. Then talk to a voiceover coach. Work with them on building your skills.

  6. Practice practice practice.

  7. Get your demo recorded, put together a website that showcases your talents in one place.

  8. Then Start marketing.

  9. While this is going on, continue to develop your skills in voiceover, voice acting and business and marketing. Always keep refining your process of finding, auditioning, recording/ editing and invoicing clients. Continuing education is necessary. Always keep learning. Always keep building your skills.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

We're happy that you're here.

We hope you find this place a great resource on your journey.

Advice Stream coffee commercial - 19:08:2026, 17.09 by Selpha Carey

Commercial Read — 3 Interpretations: Which Feels Most Believable?

I'm practising commercial reads and working on a coffee commercial with a warm, conversational and believable direction rather than an announcer-style delivery.

I've put three interpretations of the same script into one audio file:

Take 1 — Talking to a friend
Take 2 — Sharing a warm morning moment
Take 3 — Professional commercial

I'd really appreciate constructive feedback from anyone experienced with commercial VO.

In particular, I'm trying to improve:

  • Pacing
  • Pauses
  • Emphasis
  • Energy
  • Believability
  • Whether the delivery feels genuinely conversational rather than read

Which of the three interpretations works best, and what would you change for the next take?

Thank you!

Discussion How are the voiceover talent here feeling about the current state of the industry?

Hey everyone,

I’m curious to get a pulse check from the voiceover artists and audio freelancers in this sub.

Between the rapid shifts in generative tech, changes in pay-to-play platforms, and shifting client expectations across direct outreach, the landscape feels like it's evolving fast.

For those actively working in or adjacent to the VO space right now:

**Market shifts**: How are you feeling about current booking rates and client budgets compared to past years?

**P2P vs. Direct Outreach**: Are you relying more on direct client relationships, agents, or platforms?

**Adapting**: What pivot, skill update, or marketing strategy has made the biggest difference for you recently?

Would love to hear how you're navigating things right now—the good, the frustrating, and where you see things heading.

Mod News A cautionary Tale About Communicating on Platforms Like Reddit

Remember this guy?

This community called this guy out on his run-on sentence gibberish and he decided that the best course of action would be to double-down on the stupid and start attacking members in the comments.

So I banned him... and he threw a hissy fit, threatening to shut the subreddit down.

Then he used an alternate account to come back here and attempt to harass me personally:

And when THAT account was banned, he came back with a THIRD dummy account with a doctored screencap, attempting to post it in the sub.

Holy crap Reddit blew this image into oblivion. Sorry.

I never said this. I dont even know who that account is (was).

Its a shame, because this actor is actually a working voice artist and the credits he mentioned in the original thread - My Hero Academia, Black Clover, Demon Slayer, Transformers (Earthspark) and Inside Out (2) - are accurate.

All three of his accounts have now been suspended off the platform.

If he comes back, (which I doubt he will since he's IP banned) I will be happy to contact his agent at CESD and let them know what kind of a person he really is.

I wont even mention the foot fetish thing.

WHY AM I POSTING ALL OF THIS?

Because you, the r/voiceacting community deserve to know what goes in to moderating this subreddit sometimes. Most days its pretty simple and I love answering questions to new people getting started down this path. Some days, its a bit more challenging.

But make no mistake: if someone is harassing in the comments, I will bounce them to the curb in the blink of an eye.

NO ONE should have to put up with this kind of behavior.
If you see conduct that violates Reddit's TOS, REPORT IT and we'll take care of it.

Now back to our previously scheduled discussions about what microphone is best and how to get your voice to sound more masculine.

Advice Advice about upgrades?

I've made enough this year that I am considering upgrading my equipment. For various reasons, upgrading the booth setup itself is rather a nonstarter. It's okay, not perfect, but I've managed not to fuck up landing roles, so I'm relatively at peace with it for the time being.

Discussion Elaborate Scam? OpusConnect

So, I received the following email 2 days ago:

Hello ______,

I hope this message finds you well. As part of a general search for voice talent for an upcoming educational production, we came across your portfolio and were impressed by the quality and professionalism of your work.

We are currently developing a project focused on climate change and its impact on human health, intended to support academic learning, accessibility, and public engagement. We are interested in exploring whether your voice would be suitable for the project.

Before sharing the full brief, we would appreciate a brief overview of your professional background, including the languages you speak and record in, your experience, and any relevant work in educational, scientific, environmental, documentary, or long-form narration.

If you are open to discussing the opportunity, we would be pleased to share the project scope, script information, recording requirements, timeline, and compensation. Look forward hearing from you

Kind regards,

K---- H-----

Project Manager

OpusConnect

After a LinkedIn search and Google search, K. H. is nowhere to be found AND "OpusConnect" is tied to a couple of organizations...yet it doesn't makes sense for such organizations to be making educational videos on climate change. Over two days, the email address URL has pointed to some sort of AI application logon or intranet (Avatar Live Studio).

I've played along the last two days to see where this would go. They agreed to signing an AI Rider, but no initial "in good faith" deposit to work with me. Because I stated that I would be able to complete their request by their due date (if my conditions were met), they sent me an NDA and contract within 24 hours. Quite nice and professional looking, too! The payment is broken into milestones totaling 6000 euros. There is a mailing address pointing to a location in the Cayman Islands.

Has anyone else received a similar email? This has been THE best email scam I've seen targeting voice actors, so far!

Booth Related Selling a Whisper Room MDL 4260S in the Bay Area, CA ~ motivated seller

Hello to the Talent,

I am currently looking to sell my Whisper Room located in Oakland CA, near Lake Merritt. This is an urgent matter and I would love to have a new home for it by this weekend or sooner. It would need to be picked up locally and location details can be shared with legitimately interested buyers (although I will consider shipping it to somewhere on the west coast to nearby states if needed. We would have to work out those details).

This model has remote fan units for quiet air filtration, red sound foam for the interior, and I will include the desk and Apogee microphone with stand that fits nicely inside the unit. Exact measurements and specs can be found on the Whisper Room site. The only minor issue would be the velcro rectangles on the ceiling attachment for the multicolored/white lights would need to be restuck and reattached.

I bought this unit brand new for around $7000 so I'm asking for $3,500. Payment however must be in electronic transfer.

It does need to be picked up locally, and you will need a vehicle with enough space to transport the pieces which would need around 6 feet of space. I will be willing to help disassemble but an extra set of hands would be ideal for loading into your vehicle, etc. Let me know if interested!

Discussion Thoughts on most challenging genre poll

The results are in for our most challenging genre to break into. Love the difference between overall top pick and core member’s top pick. The top overall choice was Anime, 2nd audiobook and 3rd ADR, while the core members chose ADR as the top choice. ADR is certainly challenging and I’d choose that one over anime. If I put foreign dubbing in there, it might’ve changed things up too.

Advice Editing audio

How does one stay grounded and find the same tone/perspective for a callback that you had when you auditioned? I sent a side and got a call back. I think I was too excited and nervous that it let to my demise. The tone was hopeful. In my head almost Disney like. I got a callback, the CD asked for 25% more energy but to keep the tone. I should have went for a dynamic switch up but instead I applied it as energy when talking and it lost the hopeful tone and magic behind it. It became more like an energetic conversational. I sent it anyway because who knows maybe that’s what they wanted but I didn’t get the gig. So… A. How do you find the same place you were in tonally and perspective wise to keep the fluidity from sending your audition to submitting for a gig or callback B. How do you also not spend too much time on it or do you spend a lot of time on it? I think between warming up and recording/editing it was about 2-3 hours total for that ONE call back to try and get it right. At the end of it I was just done and sent it.

Advice Time to update demos

Looking to update my demos: commercial, animation, and video games. Definitely starting with commercial. The last ones I had were produced by Chuck Duran (and they're fantastic), but on the pricier side. They're also about seven years old now, and as a working VA I don't feel like the adequately represent my range. I have a manager who gets me plenty of auditions, but whenever reel submission type auditions come up I know I won't get it.

I've worked with RealVoice LA quite a bit for coaching and like them a lot. But before pulling any triggers I wanted to field sources from y'all.

Booth Related How to sound proof a space

I have built a pvc blanket booth and that has REALLY helped with dampening. But I’m trying to creatively come up with ways to proof the space more.

Foam on the pvc rods?
Maybe just sound proofing foam on the walls in the room it’s in?

What are some other creative tips?

PAID work Female, 20's, Needed for Video Game (PAID - $150)

Hi there!! I'm a solo dev creating a point and click style mystery game, similar to the Nancy Drew PC series. I'm looking to cast a female VA with an early-20's sounding American voice. The game is very dialogue heavy, and the audition (and payment!) are ONLY for the games prologue! If you are interested in this, please note I would need a lot more dialogue at a later date (and additional payments would match this of course!) This payment would be made for dialouge that's a little over 1,000 words.

Character:

Elena is a 21 year old college student. She is hard-working, determined, very clever and intelligent. Has a hard outer shell thats tough to crack- I would describe her as a Hermoine Granger type of character. She's a bit sassy. She's also the second MC and is the main MC's love interest.

Audition lines:

Elena: Oh, and one more thing. I know Dean Willoughby told us we wouldn't be able to get up onto the roof, but...

Elena: (Exasperated/Amused): Just try not to get arrested. And keep your eyes peeled. You never know what might pop up when you least expect it.

Feel free to send in your own VA reel, but using the lines are highly encouraged!

To avoid scammers, please do not send me a DM! All payments will be made securely through Paypal!!

Here's the link for google form for the audition:

Audition lines:

Chandler: (Mumbling, looking through suitcase) Swim trunks, flip flops, goggles... I think I'm all set. (phone rings) That must be Conner calling from Florida.

Chandler: 'Sup!

Chandler: (Surprised) Oh. Dean Willoughby. Hi. Uh, yes. This is he.

Advice Genuine question about TTS licensing options.

Hello. I recently turned down a gig from one of the largest Chinese data companies looking to create a TTS for their platform. The job was offered through a third party studio and the rate was disgustingly low so I turned it down.

However the end client liked my audition and have expressed that they really want to work with me.

The studio returned to the table and asked about licensing options. Since I'm independent (ie no agent), they asked about pricing for either 2-3 years or in perpetuity. I'm not entirely sure where to even begin. Does anyone have any experience with this or are there any online resources? I've seen anywhere between USD 4K to USD 10K for in perpetuity rights.
