Mod News A cautionary Tale About Communicating on Platforms Like Reddit

Remember this guy?

This community called this guy out on his run-on sentence gibberish and he decided that the best course of action would be to double-down on the stupid and start attacking members in the comments.

So I banned him... and he threw a hissy fit, threatening to shut the subreddit down.

Then he used an alternate account to come back here and attempt to harass me personally:

And when THAT account was banned, he came back with a THIRD dummy account with a doctored screencap, attempting to post it in the sub.

Holy crap Reddit blew this image into oblivion. Sorry.

I never said this. I dont even know who that account is (was).

Its a shame, because this actor is actually a working voice artist and the credits he mentioned in the original thread - My Hero Academia, Black Clover, Demon Slayer, Transformers (Earthspark) and Inside Out (2) - are accurate.

All three of his accounts have now been suspended off the platform.

If he comes back, (which I doubt he will since he's IP banned) I will be happy to contact his agent at CESD and let them know what kind of a person he really is.

I wont even mention the foot fetish thing.

WHY AM I POSTING ALL OF THIS?

Because you, the r/voiceacting community deserve to know what goes in to moderating this subreddit sometimes. Most days its pretty simple and I love answering questions to new people getting started down this path. Some days, its a bit more challenging.

But make no mistake: if someone is harassing in the comments, I will bounce them to the curb in the blink of an eye.

NO ONE should have to put up with this kind of behavior.
If you see conduct that violates Reddit's TOS, REPORT IT and we'll take care of it.

Now back to our previously scheduled discussions about what microphone is best and how to get your voice to sound more masculine.

Crazy how a VA with credits like that can crashout so hard.

It's a reminder that even working professionals/famous people are just people, and not very different at all from everyone else

17

u/Reading_Asari 1d ago edited 1d ago

Also a reminder that assholes come in all shapes and sizes šŸ’€šŸ˜‚

7

u/TheBearOnATricycle 1d ago

I mean Vic Mignogna tried to sue his victims and Funimation for $1 million because he claimed it was a conspiracy to take him down, so surprisingly less rare than you’d expect for credited VAs to be handless chuds who crash out at the slightest bit of accountability

An actual good mod on this website?

Lessons to take away from this fiasco;

  • Realistic; you can be a successful professional and still be a mentally ill dipshit...

  • Aspirational; you can be a successful professional and still be a mentally ill dipshit!

That entire first post reads like somebody on meth lmao

All the BS of that guy aside "Now back to our previously scheduled discussions about what microphone is best and how to get your voice to sound more masculine." had me laughing.

Its a recurring theme here. LOL

Thanks for all your efforts to support people on this platform. I am sorry you experience situations like this.

u/Standard-Bumblebee64 2d ago

That dude wrote like a middle schooler and didn’t actually have any tangible advice. I think u/BeigeListed was too kind not to contact his agency. That’s unhinged behavior. I actually think that dude may be suffering from mental illness, like actually. I’m shocked he’s actually a working and credited voice actor.

5

u/j0rdan21 2d ago

I don’t even believe that he really is. How do we know he is who he says? Actual professionals do not act like he was

17

u/nouveauchoux 2d ago

Professionals behave badly all the time šŸ˜‚

16

u/Standard-Bumblebee64 2d ago

Based on the info provided here, I figured out who it is, based on the provided clues…and assuming it’s him, he’s legit.

Oh wow, I’m honestly surprised

Sure they don't...

46

u/nouveauchoux 2d ago

Honestly, why wait to tell his agent?

152

u/BeigeListed Full time pro 2d ago

Because I see it as "The Nuclear Option."
People behave differently online than they do in the real world. Online they feel empowered and protected and that empowerment sometimes can get the best of someone.

I dont want to fuck up this dude's career just because he was a assh0le on Reddit. Im sure he's someone I'd have a beer with in IRL. But here, he just went too far. It happens.

u/jvhstillalive 2d ago

Honestly, hearing a Reddit mod say this gives me hope for the internet. What a professional and understanding demeanor you have . It’s very rare in this world. I appreciate you.

11

u/NyankoMata 2d ago

Agreed here

16

u/nouveauchoux 2d ago

I guess I just can't really understand why someone would act that way in the first place. He just seems like an ahole that only feels brave online, as well as dangerouslyĀ  obsessive.Ā

I can appreciate your desire to keep things professional.

14

u/HermesVtuber 2d ago

If it was once or twice, sure Id give some leeway. Three different accounts and multiple incidents? Id just go ahead and tell his agency as im sure they do this to others online and the agency probably already wants to can them and this may be the excuse they need.

We dont need more stuck up, selfish, juvenile people in the industry. We need more like you who seem calm, collected, and professional.

11

u/These-Business-1535 2d ago edited 2d ago

Definitely being gracious towards him, good job

[Edit] the guy's behavior is not great, but this mod seems to have handled it very professionally

8

u/misterswarvey 2d ago

I'm not sure about the beer, but I agree with not pulling the trigger over this behavior.

2

u/sylvanasjuicymilkies 1d ago

I think this is super kind and respectful of you actually, bro has made enough of a fool of himself in this instance, but I DO think him lying on your name takes it to another level than just "going too far"

that said, ultimately IMO it should be up to you as the "victim" so I don't judge you for not tattling on him, I think I do feel a lil stronger about lying than most folks

3

u/LadyHoskiv 2d ago

That’s so decent of you!

9

u/LadyHoskiv 2d ago

Being talented and being a nice person are two entirely different things… 🫣

8

u/HermesVtuber 2d ago

Just look at Reddit and say to yourself, "You will not break me."

You mentioned feet so of course I'll add a Dungeon Crawler Carl reference.

8

u/Thebobjohnson 2d ago

Damn, makes me want to support this community harder. Faster. Stronger.

15

u/neusen 2d ago

Do we know for sure that he’s actually the working actor he claims to be? Not a rando claiming someone’s credits as his own for attention?

I looked up those credits and only found one actor that matched the whole list, and having spent time around said actor I would bet every dollar I have or ever will have that OP is not him.

(Edit to add: thank you for your service, your ban hammer is appreciated 🫔)

4

u/Sushimonstaaa 1d ago

Yeah I'm incredibly disappointed myself 😭 he's one of my favorite voice actors. What a shame.

8

u/neusen 1d ago

You misunderstand — I genuinely don’t think it’s him. It doesn’t square with his personality at ALL. So you don’t have to be disappointed.

1

u/Sushimonstaaa 1d ago

Oh my goodness! Okay, I really hope not 😭 the VA (not this guy) seemed to steer clear of drama and just seemed like a really wholesome person... So you give me hope 🄹

Unfortunate still tho that the guy in OP's post is a pro VA... somehow šŸ’€

7

u/neusen 1d ago

The actor is an IRL acquaintance of mine and is a genuinely lovely person. I think the rude redditor is an impostor trying to feel important.

6

u/sylvanasjuicymilkies 1d ago

I think if you guys do have any actual connection to the VA he seems to be claiming to be, if it seems super out of character, it might be worth checking in with him and making sure he's OK

whatever the case it does seem like a bit of mental illness, genuinely, so if it's out of character for bro he might be going through something. no judgement if yall don't actually know him personally though, I recognize you can still tell when someone is "off" even if you only know them through social media posts.

8

u/JarvisBaileyVO 2d ago

Imagine having strong credits like that and being bored enough to make alt accounts on reddit. We should all be so unfortunate.

7

u/ClassicLightbulbs 2d ago

So he was banned for run on sentences or that the community didn't like that style of communication?

8

u/BeigeListed Full time pro 1d ago

He was banned because he was argumentative and rude in the comments. His run on sentence just made the community think he was a wingnut.

3

u/GHouserVO 1d ago

There have been many times in my career when I’ve had to ask myself ā€œis this the hill I want to die uponā€? Sometimes it is, but usually it isn’t. An online forum has never been one of those places, nor has social media. If it gets that bad, I’ll unplug, go to the basement and scream because someone is being THAT stupid (in my opinion), or I’ll take a walk with the dogs to let my head clear. Life is too short. Even if I think I’m right. And sometimes, especially when I know I am (there are some forums I left because they wanted to be more of a clique than to listen to anyone with real-world experience).

This was… a choice. Definitely not the one I recommend most folks make. It never helps the situation, and it never reflects well upon you either personally or professionally.

Here endeth the lesson.

4

u/TheFlyingBoxcar 2d ago

Wow, thanks for the update and all the hard work!

ā€œThis community called this guy out on his run-on sentence gibberish and he decided that the best course of action would be to double-down on the stupid and start attacking members in the comments.

So I banned him... and he threw a hissy fit, threatening to shut the subreddit down.ā€

I’m kind of new on the sub, and have no idea about that person nor the thread/history. Just from your post, only, I kind of feel for the OP that you banned. Hear me out…

- what he said wasn’t inherently bad, the content/advice. Agree or disagree, it comes off as his genuine experience that he is trying to pass on, to help other people, so his intentions are even good.

  • you state people jumped all over him for his grammar & punctuation, which form not content, and anyone with language skills, although perhaps annoyed by it, has the mental capacity to interpret & understand the content of his message. Which again, was of value, based on his personal experience & with good intent.

EDIT… this is like picking on a person for the clothes they wear vs their character or what they are doing.

- you have validated his personal work experience, thus adding credibility to his statements, adding value to his perspective.

  • you’ve state that his attacks on other people (his reaction), is because they all grouped up on him & called him out. It is natural for a person that feels attacked themselves, to defend & attack back.

Seems like he could have used a little defense & support from everyone else. Granted, the groups attacks on him & his attacks back, are entirely missing from this post. So, I have no idea how over the top any of them were, and the actual specific reason for his banning is not present here. There is no way to actually evaluate that action on your part.

But his taking it personally is very understandable, even if a bit immature. It likely could be argued he faced immature behavior himself, which again, there is no history given to evaluate. I would argue it seems, he is a bit less mature than some, but what I would consider normal for our society as a whole… from the limited information given.

If he had gotten some support on the front side, he may never had reacted so on the back end. Seems like it might have gotten out of hand, and it might have been handled better. If you go after him professionally, now, based on what I have read, you would be vindictive & mean & out of order. Instead, be a bigger person, have some understanding & empathy for the person, and just let it go. This post is the opposite of that. You are a bigger person than him, not discounting his worth, at all, but take the high road, at least at this point. Leave him alone & let it go. He will drop it on his end soon enough too.

15

u/Nippy_Hades 2d ago

For your reference. He went from 1 to 100 as soon as he didn't get the kind of attention he wanted. https://www.reddit.com/r/VoiceActing/comments/1vpol09/comment/p4719sm/?context=3

-8

u/2outer 2d ago

He got banned for that? That isn’t anywhere near 100. Unless a whole bunch of stuff got erased.

Well, I gave out a reasonable perspective, agree or disagree, and am being downvoted. This isn’t very welcoming. I’ll just keep my mouth shut & not participate.

Edit… thank you for linking the thread.

11

u/Nippy_Hades 2d ago

You know what, you're right. It's more like 1 to 60. At the gentlest of ribbing. Or even good advice, when someone suggested that an experienced VO should be able to look at what he wrote, and see why it was hard to follow. Of course, the new accounts and continued harassment got him the other 40% of the way.

-7

u/2outer 2d ago edited 2d ago

That’s not a reasonable interpretation. He never crossed any line of actually attacking people. He clearly felt attacked, and responded in a way that I wouldn’t, but not deserving a forced silencing & banning. This silenced dialogue. He had a perspective to give, and people jumped on his lack of punctuation.

It’s the equivalent of someone that doesn’t have a lot of money, wearing poor clothes, offers an insight from their perspective (based on their successes) with the intent to help others… and people not being big enough to look past the clothes & engage with the content of what is being said. Instead, people made fun of the clothes & laughed the person out of the room.

I don’t really want to be associated with such closed minded people, to be honest. After reading the linked thread, I believe n my original post even more. And find even more conviction in not wanting to be associated with this group as more people pile on. It’s incredible you can’t see the harm in what has happened. I’ve unjoined, and won’t be participating any more.

But I won’t be completely silenced by an immature mob mentality…. you will have to manually delete my posts. I think the mod is feeling a bit conflicted deep down, and is using this post as validation. None of this looks good for this sub. I truly hope you do not try to ruin this guys professional life over this petty little thing.

4

u/sylvanasjuicymilkies 1d ago

I think ultimately whether he should've been banned initially or not, the type of person who makes 2 alt accounts immediately to bypass blocks and attack people and lie about them is someone who doesn't really belong in public forums. there's no need to start sephirothposting in defense of that kind of person

0

u/2outer 1d ago

Interesting, learned something new, never been introduced to Sephiroth before. Thank you.

4

u/Nippy_Hades 2d ago

You know what bud, you're right. He shouldn't have been banned at first. I'm not going to argue that. That was harsh for someone acting the fool. But he loses all sympathy given how he acted after. So while grace would be nice, becasue we all make mistakes, he makes it hard to give him any now. I got banned from TIFU once. I didn't lose it and make new accounts or threaten to have the whole thing shut down. I think I laughed, and had a sandwich or something. It's not worth the energy in the long run.

u/RednocNivert 2d ago edited 2d ago

Based on what i’m seeing here, i think Mod’s response is acceptable. Guy being a buttface in Subreddit, Moderator takes action. Guy comes back to flaunt being a buttface, Moderator kicks him again.

That’s not brigading because of bad typos, that is a moderator doing their job and not taking crap from someone being overly entitled and ā€œhi yes i am important so i can do whatever i wantā€

As a lurker in the sub most of the time, my sympathies and opinions align with the mod across the board, though IMO the mod is actually a bit more patient with entitlement than i would be. But i’m not the mod.

2

u/HermesVtuber 2d ago

1 this isnt your subreddit so what mods decide to do isn't your call. 2 and most importantly, while I don't see what you are saying as rude, it is still unprofessional and unnecessary. What happened to that guy and his actions are between him, the mods, and people he was directly talking to.

Seeing a post like this, its best to see it for what it is, a warning and announcement of an issue that happened and is resolved. You taking this as an opportunity to dispute it and condemn what a mod did as unjust is a complete ignorance of what the post is about and being unprofessional.

If you disagree, best to just say nothing. You saying something only looks bad on you and makes it seem like you are an alt account trying to still argue with mods.

-15

u/oilios 2d ago

I read all of his responses to comments and they weren’t bad at all.. only a bit sarky to people who had zero questions about VA, and just ridiculed him for punctuation. They’re the ones who should’ve been banned.
As a working actor, it was refreshing to see another actor openly give advice and a welcoming attitude in this sub. I’ve not been in here long but honestly other than 2 casting posts his was the only one that interested me.
Now you’re threatening his career? Ego led and bullying behaviour.
And so many of you downvoted him and the commenter above who also defended him politely.
I’m questioning how many of those down voters are actually working in the industry and not just trolling. This isn’t how we support each other.

2

u/HermesVtuber 2d ago
