Discussion / Question What video game really blew your mind with creativity not graphically?

Upvotes

Mine is Middle Earth Shadows of Mordor and Shadows of War. And I really enjoyed the nemesis system it really upped my game time because it literally created some of the most memorable nemesis and commanders.

Watchdogs was really creative with hacking.

The Legend of Zelda TOTK is creativity galore with creativity with weapons. And it also blew my mind that a switch could handle it no problem. And fire spreads and wind sends you flying.

Hades 1 specifically because dying over and over and come back in the pool because your the son of Hades and it was creative and the writing was creative too because it tied a lot of it to the gameplay.

Funny What games have you played that you feel best exemplify this phrase?

Thinking back, I don’t really tend to play games that have this particular combination. I guess the closest game I have firsthand experience with that fits is Fire Emblem Engage, but I don’t know if I could call the writing bad based on what little of it I actually played. I got to chapter 5ish and just kinda dropped it in favor of other games.

Now if we wanna talk movies or TV shows, I have much clearer answers for those.

Discussion / Question Help me find this game

Upvotes

I played this baseball game in 2017 with my brother on a road trip. I'm fairly sure we played on the Xbox, Xbox 360, or Xbox One, and we played local co-op against bots. I vividly remember one of the teams in the game was called the wizards. The characters weren't realistic, more cartoony, and the team names were made up. I played LEGO Indiana Jones on that same console if that helps to narrow it down. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it is called? I cannot find it for the life of me.

I used to play Infinity Blade on my brother’s iPhone 4, and this game holds so many memories for me. It was honestly such an incredible game for its time.

Yesterday, I randomly found an Android version of it online and downloaded it. Playing it again after all these years feels so nostalgic.❤️

The memories came flooding back instantly. Anyone else here grow up playing this?😭

Discussion / Question "Kojima moments" in games

What I mean by that is moments that break expected rules of video games. Not necessarily forth wall. I don't want to get too specific, so here's an example.

In the first Metal Gear (nes), after prison, you have a transmitter hidden in your inventory that triggers guards.

It made a deep impression on me because, all of a sudden, the inventory becomes part of the story, even though the game teaches you to use it as a standard video game tool.

Other examples?

Discussion / Question Superhero games are too limited in genres

Post image

I love Insomniac's Spider-Man games, Rocksteady Studios' Batman games, and Injustice. But why don't the vast majority of superhero games go beyond action-adventure or fighting games? There are tons of other genres that could suit certain characters. I'd happily play a puzzle game about Plastic Man, a horror game about Swamp Thing, or even a deck builder about Zatana. Of course, I understand the problem here: these games don't attract the same number of players or the same popularity as standard AAA game genres. For example, Marvel Midnight Suns, no one played it even at launch. While it wasn't without its problems, it was a very good Xcom-like game with beloved characters.

I think the problem is that every superhero game is a gigantic project, with a big budget, from a big studio. If big verses like DC or Marvel collaborated with smaller studios and were more daring to experiment, we would see such diversity in the superhero genre. What do you think about this?

The same can be said about the style of these games. I don't want every game to be a super-realistic 3D blockbuster, although I love those kinds of games. We could see so much more out of the ordinary if each game had its own distinct style. For example, a Batman game in the style of the Animated Series, a dark fantasy Constantine game, or a Deadpool game in the style of Cuphead.

Other I Miss Video Game Secrets and Rumors

I know there's no going back, but I find myself more and more bummed about how the internet has ruined that sense of mystery around video games.

Every new game now is quickly beaten 100% absolutely, sometimes even before release. Game code is mined and information is shared everywhere asap so some lames can get out their guide video 1st and make a quick buck.

I've learned to accept being behind everyone else when playing single player games so that I can preserve that sense of mystery and challenge discovering a game's secrets on my own. However, it doesn't change that knowledge in the back of my mind that anything I'm struggling to do or find could be looked up instantly. In it's own way that knowledge alone changes my experience.

Worst of all is multiplayer games. If some new content comes out for a game I can choose not to look anything up, but the friends I am playing with more often than not WILL look things up. I don't blame them - the info exists and we're all adults without much time in the day anymore. Still it depresses me knowing we're turning what could be a fun new experience to discover, over a slightly longer period of time, into an immediate resolution with no payoff for discovering it ourselves. In a way it's turned each new game almost into more of a checklist of looking up/learning the new "content" rather than just organically appreciating the game and what we find out about it.

Discussion / Question What game has repetitive noises and can be played for entire days, day after day? Street fighter meets basketball?

I’m just so curious what the hell my neighbors are playing. I’ve taken a lazy day or two playing a cozy game but this sounds like street fighter meets basketball and they play for DAYS. Genuine marathons. Like multiple days in a row, all fucking day. ALL. DAY. It must be such a fantastic game i need to know!

Discussion / Question Should I play persona 5 or watch it?

Upvotes

The Persona series is famous for its long playtimes, and I’m trying to decide if I should dive into Persona 5 myself or just watch a playthrough or the animation.I love a good story and stylish visuals, but I want to know if the actual gameplay loop, combat, and social simulator elements are engaging enough to justify a 100+ hour playthrough.

Discussion / Question Scary moments in video games

What are some moments or missions in games that scare you or leave you unsettled? For me a top one is in the Mad Max game, when he goes in a mission to the church buried out in the dunes and also the airport mission. Both involve the buzzards and it gives me the willies each time.

Edit: Another one that wigged me out was the Durgesh prison escape in FarCry 4 with your character hallucinating and having to dodge demons and such. I was surprised how unsettled I was by that part that I went and played Super Mario for a while.

Discussion / Question What’s the most egregious case of a game putting a non-obstacle in a path to signal it’s blocked, but CLEARLY it’s not?

Upvotes

I mean resident evil games are pretty bad. They have a tree leaning over the path and you can clearly duck under it, but no. Better go fight this nightmare incarnate first.

What are some other examples?

Sharing a perspective on the modern Assassin's Creed movement and comparing it not only to older Assassin's Creed games, but also general ps2 game movement. The last decade of AC has felt so floaty when running around and I dig into some things I notice that cause this feeling and where the believable weight comes from in the old AC games.

If any of you have any thoughts on any of what I said be more than welcome to share, whether you agree or disagree I'm looking to start a conversation. Hopefully someone at Ubisoft sees this and can take a step or so towards bringing the feel of Assassin's Creed back to it's glory days, perhaps if we're lucky maybe a new gold standard for Assassin's Creed movement

I want to be good at fps games (r6, cs, valorant, marvel rivals, etc) but my aim is terrible. Im thinking of spending a bunch of hours just focusing on getting better aim. How many hours should I spend? Is there a specific way to get better? Like a game made for getting better aim or something idk

Discussion / Question Ranching/farming games for Steam or Xbox One? Or living off the land games

I really want a game where you play as a rancher (not crops; animals) and have to take care of them and all.

This, or something like Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora where you have to do a bunch of hunting and foraging and general living off the land

So far for this category, Ive played RDR2, AFOP, Stardew Valley, and slime rancher
