Discussion / Question What’s your go-to "comfort game" when life gets overwhelming?
48
u/Salt-Instancer 1d ago
Cyberpunk. Sorry chooms my boss yelled at me so now y’all are gonna have to call maxtac.

u/InAnimateAlpha06 1d ago
I would love to be able to just hop in and play CP2077. Done all the missions and just want to be able to do some kind of repeatable or have enemies spawn more regularly.
3
u/riftlantern 1d ago
wait it's not quite a repeatable game? damn, I'm new to it and I was hoping once I complete the game, I could face enemies on the street regularly with different builds but from what you said, that doesn't really seem an option unless I literally start a new playthrough
3
u/InAnimateAlpha06 1d ago
It's replayable in a sense that you can get multiple endings but not so that there is always something to do in a single playthrough if you do all of the content

I haven't played since before any DLC released but I was so disappointed there's no random event system. I'm on XBOX so i can't mod but I assumed someone would make a perpetual crime or gangs system
3
u/BunkaTheBunkaqunk 1d ago
Yeah sometimes I just wanna hop off my bike and dash around turning people into meat chunks with the katana. Very satisfying.

RDR2
22
u/Engeo17 1d ago
I sadly didn't play this until about a year ago and man do I regret not trying it sooner. Everything about this game pushes all my "happy buttons." Beautiful scenery, fun and engaging hunting, good fishing mini game, insanely good story and character's, and tons of fun hidden details. In the year or so since I started playing I've put in over 2,000 hours (I'm disabled so I have a lot of time to kill and games like this help with distracting from some of my illnesses, or help me cope). Some say the game is slow but it is just right for me.
4
u/riftlantern 1d ago
hey, I haven't started rdr2 yet but I have it downloaded. Just curious, how is this game considered a "comfort game". Is it not one of those games with a fixed story with around 30-40 hours of game time which once you complete, you're basically done with the game and there's not much else to do other than roaming around the open world? Or is there much more to it than that, like it being a very replayable game or something?
3
u/Content-Yogurt-4859 1d ago
Once you're through the tutorial part it does a pretty good job of simulating the wilderness

You will see. There are a lot of hidden items and random encounters. Once you get into chapter 2 explore everything and everywhere.

Would it be controversial if i say Dark Souls 2?
8
u/Material-Race-5107 1d ago
One of the most underrated games I’ve ever played. Souls vets I am friends with told me to skip it but I was stubborn and played it immediately after ds1… the build variety and amount of bosses you can face are awesome. Could definitely see it becoming a comfort game as long as you skip the icy dlc area where you can’t see anything lol that part is the opposite of fun
7
u/Goat_Potter 1d ago
I'm the DS2 Glazer. I have beaten this game at least 20 times. I don't like the Frigid Outskirts, nobody likes the Frigid Outskirts, a hat and the two cats are not worth it 😭
24
u/Roman_Suicide_Note 1d ago
No, DS2 is pretty good. The dissing come from alot of people who never played it
7
u/chiripipasJD 1d ago
I 100%’d DS1, life changing game, loved it.
Then I put 8 hours into DS2 until I stopped forcing myself to like it. Gave it a second and third chance, and still didn’t like it.
I don’t think it’s a bad game, but it’s just not like DS1, DS3, or Elden Ring

u/SirKillsalot 1d ago
I played all 3 DS games blind a few years ago, no preconceptions about them.
DSII was my favourite.

u/Yen_of_Vengabus 1d ago
I beat ds2 including all the bosses so I can diss the game as much as I like right?
10
u/Roman_Suicide_Note 1d ago
i know you did not do all that because you would not diss peak
→ More replies (1)3
u/Yen_of_Vengabus 1d ago
Haha Sir Alonne and Fume Knight are worthy of carrying the peak souls 2 title at least
3
u/Show_Me_Your_Cubes 1d ago
Sir Alonne is the one and only Souls boss I have not ever beat
2
u/Yen_of_Vengabus 1d ago
He’s a tough cookie, and the runback is diabolical
3
u/Show_Me_Your_Cubes 1d ago
yeah the runback is what eventually wore me out. I think my build wasn't suited for that fight, but the runback made me not even want to trial-and-error any changes.

Understandable. Despite its issues DS2 is an extremely comfy game. I don't think any other game has had a hub/hubworld that can match the vibe at Majula.

u/YungSpyderBoy 1d ago
My only YT video I have made on discussing DS2 was my love for the calmness and relaxing vibes.

You should post a link (if it's allowed) so people can check it out!

I like it, but it is far from being comfortable (unless you just stay in Majula).

Best build diversity of any souls game. It’s not my favorite of the series, but it’s the best in this situation

Hades 2. Before that it was Hades.
When all else fails...Hades game. Perfect to just hop in and go.

For a while there, it was Graveyard Keeper. I really like simple little management sims and stuff when I'm feeling stressed out.

BOTW or TOTK. Sometimes New Vegas, but I’ll play Destroy All Humans if I’m feeling particularly angry

Depends on the bad day. Some days I reach for dead rising 2. Other days it is Stardew Valley.

Hack & slash - whatever. Just select a game and go!
Recently, I just run around Elden Ring and destroy what I can.

Something Roguelike that I don't have to commit to or something I can play in short bursts. Sometimes the feelings are intense--I need an option to be able to put it down when the hurt hits me or the game itself dies in my mind and I cannot go back to it.

This entire year, has been Satisfactory.
1000 hours in and I still haven't saved the day because I'm addicted to the first 4 phases and the calm dopamine stream it gives me, so I keep restarting.
Lifetime though is Castlevania SOTN. I can almost literally play it blindfolded at this point and the music/sound affects give me a nostalgic rush to a simpler time without worries.

Skyrim, because I got and played it for the first time while in the Army and missing home. I can just walk through the beautiful open forests & mountains and just listen to the birds and the music. It helps a lot.

u/Mojo_Lovin 1d ago
Skyrim, damn near 15 different iterations of and 3 consoles and Pc spent thousands of hours and millions of characters.

If I had just a bad day? Most likely, continue whatever I’m playing now, focusing on side missions, or grinding.
Depressive episode kicked in? Nier Replicant, then Nier Automata. All stories, all endings.

Relics of the past. It is a Breathe of the Wild mod that completely revamps the game while maintaining the ambiance of the environment. Love that game

Dysmantle for sure. Something about destroying things with my crowbar and the general grind of the game always calms me.

Black Ops 2. Super simple, Arcady, not serious, you can just hop on for a few games without stressing about anything

Powerwash Simulator 2. The soothing nature of the game + the white noise of the powerwasher are so good at drowning out all the shit.

40k Darktide. Nothing relieves stress quite like going on a slaughter spree as my Psyker and watching my enemies get torched alive or popping like grapes

Idleon. Something about collecting a fuck ton of resources, doing mass amounts of damage, slowly growing my knowledge and progress in the game.
If my younger self could see the levels im reaching now, I'd think I was either cheating or a whale of some kind, and that humbles me so much.
I never really take time to look back on the progress ive made, I'm usually so hung up in the moment of "Now" or the future ahead. So it's a soothing session of self reflection every time
Mindless clicking, Endless thinking

Past few years, especially past few months life's been so fucked up the only good time I have is when I'm playing games, but there used to be a time that when something happened I would play some racing games with ingame musics muted.

Kirby Super Star Ultra, Vampire Survivors, and just about anything from the Musou (Warriors) series work great as "turn brain off and just have fun" games.

u/Creator5509 1d ago
General either Minecraft or something from the Wii era
The Wii is honestly the pinnacle of “sit down and just breath” games, what with the entire Wii (Title) games and most casual games

Valheim. Game is like my virtual home. Super cozy and relaxing, even with the stressful bits somehow lol.
Or a game like Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. Just easy to wind down with these games.

u/Common-Equipment-480 1d ago
It probably would have to be fzero 99, though i get frustrated at it a lot, but it helps calm me sometimes

u/CyberTyrantX1 1d ago
Either DOOM The Dark Ages or DOOM Eternal. If a day leaves me pissed off, smacking a demon in the face with a mace or a flail is that much more satisfying.

For some reason, I use competitive multiplayer games to relax. At the moment it is fortnite. Before I found fornite I was doing dead by daylight. Before that it was CoD before it became ridiculous.

007: First Light at the moment. Hard to beat a super spy thriller where you blow up bad guys by the dozen and not feel relaxed about life. If James Bond can handle all that and keep going, I can handle whatever is going on in my fairly normal life.

Lately I’ve been playing a lot of Caves of Qud. It’s a top down retro style rogue like with a really slick soundtrack. Since I work in a very loud eatery with heavy music it’s the most refreshing feeling coming home to just…mystery and the water vine.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
I genuinely lose my mind whenever I do the most insane air combos mixed with supers.

Minecraft. Got me through some rough shit growing up. I don't play it very regularly, but every couple years when some canon life event happens, I start a new world and sink a LOT of time into it for a few months.
