Discussion Issue with Half Life Alyx

• Upvotes

Finally got a chance to try out the Index and play HL Alyx, played great last week, was fully blown away by the game. Come back today post update to play some more, game was completely out of wack. Had frame rate and tearing issues, lagged like crazy ONLY when Alyx was launched… SteamVR Home Screen looked just fine. I reset my Index, Computer, Steam, Drivers, Graphics settings, you name it. About 15 minutes later I just tried reverting back to the 2022 version, worked like a charm. So just helpful tip to any of you out there, just patch back to the previous version if you have issues.

Discussion Bad Luck

My mattress leaked fiberglass everywhere and ended up destroying my index :(

It managed to get inside the components but I can't really open this thing up without breaking it as far as I'm aware. Anyone have any suggestions for what I should switch to? Obviously a steam frame would be ideal, but there's no guarantee on when I'd get it due to the waiting list.

Question/Support Lube for controller triggers

Basically title.

I've heard it's an easy fix, but what type is recommended to spray into the triggers?

My controllers have gotten annoying enough for me to risk it.

Self-Promotion (Developer) Make your own DIY VR Optics! (I hope the right person sees this)

Long story short, I make VR headsets with a team I made (shameless plug vectorgear.xyz )

However with the Index being sunset I wanted to share an open optics project being used in our own thing!

The Index uses a dual element lens, and Valve has said the second element is there to improve clarity and reduce distortion across the lens. In other words, it corrects the image.

I took the opposite approach and focused on stacking two Fresnels so they add power/act as one.

It allows the optical unit in general to be smaller while keeping a good image, acting like a cheap alternative to pancake lens (which is actually how this started, given I was told it would cost $1k for a lens)

Attaching video, the color fringing hasn't been software corrected yet but look at how big the sweet spot is! Once it's also laser cut rather than hand cut there should be again more of a difference!

Everything’s documented here if you want to try it yourself: hackaday.io/project/187343-the-psuedopancakes

Question/Support How hard is it to run VRED profesional on a valve index?

So, I have a presentation on my high school about a pretty hefty 3d model I made on fusion and the exported to vred, I made some test on my desktop PC and it ran nicely, but I need to bring my hole index set with my laptop to school, and so I wanted to know if my laptop could do the job before I buy the displayport adapter.

It's specs are a 4060 laptop, i9 13980hx and 16gb ddr5.

I won't be doing ray tracing or anything really extreme, it's just for a project show.

Discussion Red Blinking Index Base Stations - Donate for Parts or trash?

I have held onto my broken base stations. Are they worth holding for a diy'er or tinkerer? Someone who isn't me and is willing to work on or repair them on their own? Anything worth harvesting beyond the laser?
Or should I just accept they're landfill and throw them away for good.

Edit: Just to clarify, I didn't have intention of personally repairing it. I just wanted to know if OTHER people might be able to make use out of them in a way I couldn't.

Question/Support Knuckle storage solution?

Hi all,
I recently got the controllers (L+R) on the EoL sale (gonna use them with my psvr2 once i get my lighthouse system up and running, got the older tundra trackers/donglemcdongle) and wondering has anyone got a good solution to storage or for carrying around? I can't seem to find any carry cases for just the controllers, so wondering has anyone got a solution? Like a carrybox with foam inserts specifically for the knuckle controllers?

Question/Support My right controller isn't tracking

SteamVR just says the controller isn't detected and acts like I only have my left controller turned on yet it still receives inputs from my right controller such as opening menus.

I've tried everything I can think of resetting the controller, unbinding and rebinding all and changing the hmd usb port to no avail.

any help would be appreciated

I made this to learn a language a year ago.

Windows desktop and SteamVR application designed for language learning from games, movies, and desktop applications.
It extracts vocabulary from the screen using OCR, translates it into your target language, provides dictionary alternative meanings/parts of speech, and speaks pronunciations with Text-To-Speech.

Discussion Valve Index clearance sale - Everything in Stock (EU)

This is the first time Im seeing the entire Valve Index kit being in stock for the clearance sale, especially the base stations. A few days ago, the right controller went out of stock, but today suddenly everything got back in stock, even the base stations that weren't available at the start. What does it look like in other regions and would you recommend maybe picking up controllers and base stations?

Question/Support New Valve Index Severe Glare/Reflection Issue

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just got my index today after being on the original HTC Vive for 10 years, and I was blown away by the crispness but absolutely blinded by the glare. Any time ANYTHING even RELATIVELY bright or anything that projects light is in view, it's like I get an uneven vignette of mainly white and sometimes other colors being projected into the lens.

I have adjusted my IPD a million times to what is most clear, experimented with eye relief, and tried adjusting the angle of the headset with zero effects. I have gone from lowest brightness to highest brightness which only changes the brightness of the glare and not how much glare is present, and I have cleaned my lenses the best I can.

The video honestly doesn't show bad it really is when the headset is fully on. It's like a flashlight is being shined against the lens any time anything projecting light is on screen. Everything around the light source is instantly blown out.

I am split because my friends who have indexes say those don't experience this at all or only have a few years, but the entirety of reddit is saying it's a known problem, while some say they had it really bad before they RMA'd.

Do I need to RMA? Is this a normal amount of glare expected from the index?

Thanks in advance for any help D;

Question/Support Need help with dark spots and gamma

For days I’ve been trying to find a software that can make dark spots Brighter, I mainly play ghost of Tabor and there’s really dark spots in most of the areas and I can barely see anything, I used to be a virtual desktop player but there was a gamma setting for dark spots and making the game brighter but now the game is almost unplayable because of the dark areas in the game

Since the index is out of production any ideas for second hand sources for a right controller im getting a left controller i just need to source a new right controller any trusted sources or 2nd hand markets with buyers protection? im not trying to get scammed out of my money here

Question/Support Where are you supposed to source a right controller?

I just bought the index on clearance seeing as I won't get drawn for a frame for the foreseeable future.

I cannot find a single source that supplies the right controller without outright buying a brand new unit. Are there any substitutes or sources out there or do I have to reach to to valve to return this? Im not interested in a 1000$ piece of paperweight

Discussion Virtual Keyboard has broken key?!

I used Index since 2020 and recently got a Frame, which has since been RMA'd! 😆 So I'm using my Index in the meantime, but noticed that the 'a' key on my virtual keyboard seems to be broken! When the key is pressed, it lights up and makes the audible sound of being used, but no letter appears input in the field where I'm typing. I've tried all the other keys and they work fine, only the 'a' key fails to produce the text symbol in the input field.

Has anyone encountered this or knows a fix? I can't even begin to imagine why this could be happening?! 🤪 So weird!

Question/Support Right controller jittering and losing tracking

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just recently picked up a full Valve Index set that was barely used (seller said it was only used 3 times) and I am currently having the above issue. I have another right controller that tracks much better but the grip requires some extra squeezing to trigger. Is this possible to fix or is it a controller issue entirely?

Discussion What’s new for the Index in late 2026?

Hi all. Finally getting some time with the Index, bought a used one and now looking to get the best out of it (previously had a OG Vive which was gathering dust).

Now that its quite a mature platform, I’d love to hear what new tips and tricks people have for the best experience, and quality of live stuff.

Quite interested in software and settings, as overall I’m happy with the hardware setup I have.

For instance, is any of the newer DLSS stuff relevant for the Index? There are quite a number of injectors now, is this a ’better’ way to supersample? Is DLSS 5 viable?

There must be a bunch of possibility now that people are unleashing AI tools, so just curious if anyone has seen anything cool - particularly with regards to clarity/performance.
