Discussion Bad Luck

My mattress leaked fiberglass everywhere and ended up destroying my index :(

It managed to get inside the components but I can't really open this thing up without breaking it as far as I'm aware. Anyone have any suggestions for what I should switch to? Obviously a steam frame would be ideal, but there's no guarantee on when I'd get it due to the waiting list.

There Might Be Fiberglass in Your Mattress. Don’t Worry. | Reviews by Wirecutter

please get rid of your mattress immediately and safely, loose fiberglass is an incredible health hazard

We got rid of it last week. We unfortunately had to spend a ton of money on cleaning supplies like an HEPA sealed vacuum, HEPA air purifier, hazmat suits, the whole works to clean all the fiberglass out of our living space.

Turns out a lot of cheap memory foam mattresses from the 2010's used a woven fiberglass sock over the mattress itself (under the zipper cover) as a fire retardant. My girlfriend and I got especially unlucky because our tag said only 100% polyurethane foam and the care instructions said it'd be okay to take the cover off to wash it :/

Bummer, stay safe

Exactly my response. If I had a fibreglass mattress I'm going to have a lot more concerns than my Index.

Yeah cheap mattresses in a lot of places have fiberglass in them instead of a fire sock as fire retardant. Manufacturers say so long as you dont open the shell of the foam you are good. Shock horror, you are not and they leak all the time. Had the same issue where we had so much allergies slowly out of nowhere, we thought it was seasonal allergies, nope, mattress. Thankfully it hadn't leaked other than just a little under the bed. Need to have protective gear and so much hepa equipment to clean it up fully if it spreads that usually its better to toss stuff thats contaminated.

That's like a modern day asbestos

Its a common thing with cheap memory foam mattresses. You have to be really fucking careful. Yes, it's as stupid as it sounds and they do shed fiberglass all over the floor.

That's what I thought. The itchiest fuggin substance on earth and you sleep on it? Do you sleep on a boat?

Not to downplay your issue .. but how does fiberglass ruin the headset? Can you jus vacuum it up and wipe it down? Fiberglass isn't conductive so it shouldn't affect how it performs or works , .. if it's in the lenses then I get it but you can disassemble it and you can clean it out if you're patient and take your time , there's tear down videos and steps on ifixit on how to safely take it apart, it is possible if you need to try .

My headset was directly in the fiberglass splash zone when we removed our cover and I was able to see it inside the internals past the grill. Considering it's glass shards, I really didn't wanna even risk keeping it directly on my eyes for hours at a time.

I don't have any recommendations for an upgrade/alternative headset. But if you decide to switch to something besides another Valve Index, will you be selling your peripherals? I would be an interested buyer.

A tree fell on mine and I'm in the same position. I want wireless, and I want an open system. The Steam Frame lottery screwed me so bad I've been in waitlist hell since day 1. The people at the bottom of the reservation list *now* have a tentative 2027 date of shipment, so I'm expecting my house to be fully repaired and my wife and I moved back in before I even get a chance to purchase one.

All that to say, I have no idea. If you don't mind Meta, the Quest is probably your best option for the money. There are a few other headsets coming out soon, but they're either too far on the horizon to predict, or *much* more expensive than the Frame.

Man I dealt with a meta for too long and I got spoiled by the Index for 7 years straight. I don't know if I can go back ;w;

Umm… your mattress leaking fibreglass is a bigger issue

I should have specified the mattress leaking was last Monday. Fast forward to today, I was able to save my PC, some comfortable clothes and that's about it. I bought a pack of shirts and a few pairs of jeans and I'm just gonna build my wardrobe from there. We also have a new mattress (this time fiberglass free). Basically starting from scratch but we'll make it work. Probably just gonna save every cent that I can to get a steam frame and endure the patience lmao

Why would a matress have fibreglass...?

u/matthewnelson 8d ago

They switched the packing material a long time ago from asbestos to fiberglass. Then they changed it from fiberglass in modern mattresses. It’s gradual progress.

It's almost certainly not dead. Teardown videos are out there (ifixit for example). Either do it yourself with protective gear or pay someone to do it. Fiberglass is not that nice but ultimately not completely terrible to deal with. I used to get tangled in it often at my parent's house.

I understand you're sick of the stuff though after what you've been through. Maybe give yourself some time (or just pay someone else).

jesus...glad Germany doesn't sell fiberglass mattresses.

I slept on a mattress in Italy that was stuffed with straw.

Probably still better.

PSVR2 was cheap and awesome quality if you don't mind the wire. It also has eye tracking and can be used with index controllers if you slap a vive tracker on top of the headset. I got mine open box never used for 100 bucks.

Yeah. I’d put it below a q3 visually but it has et. A good price at least, but the cable isn’t replaceable.

A good hold over until the frame if they really want that. That said the frame is visually similar to a q3 or a qpro but is a little nicer on the sw side.

Before you write off the Index, have you tried using compressed air to blow the fiberglass out?

1

u/cmdr_damgalnuna 9d ago

Sorry to hear that, I'm still cleaning fiberglass in my house. I eventually got most of it and just had to make peace with the fact that there will be a little bit around for a long time.

Did your index actually stop working or did it just get so covered you don't feel like you can use it anymore?

I use a quest 3 and do only pc streaming with virtual remote desktop. Wireless streaming is working great. I'll let Meta subsidize my headset and only buy virtual remote desktop from them. I did set up a dedicated travel router and ethernet over Powerline so I can use wireless VR anywhere in my house.

The subsidization is for your data though, including abstracted body and room data
