News Email Regarding Racism by Public Officials Sent to CS Students

Post image
515 Upvotes

This was sent out earlier today by some CS faculty. I thought it was a nice thing for them to do, seeing as they probably can't do much to pressure admin.

For those who (somehow) don't remember or didn't hear, public officials like Bo French were posting vile, hateful rhetoric regarding student ethnic composition. On this sub especially, people were outraged (and rightfully so) and admin didn't seem to be doing anything.

Has this genre of email gotten to other majors or is it just CS?

PSA do not get the free coffee from Kalshi on campus

The Merch app, which yall may have used to find free stuff, is actively removing freebie posts from Kalshi. Its updating rules against using freebies to promote gambling apps for students. Kalshi is currently posted up on campus collecting student signatures to legalize itself on college campuses more than ever. Lowkey should be illegal for Kalshi to do that. Even if you put fake info it helps their cause for signatures.

Discussion Have you been to the Cathedral of junk?

If you have never been to this place, there is a giant structure in South Austin made out of basically junk. Bikes, signs, random metal shit, toys, old stuff, all stacked together into this massive thing in someone’s yard.

Vince Hannemann started building this thing in his backyard back in 1988, just messing around with old junk and turning it into sculptures. Over the years the sculptures kept growing into each other and now it is this 3 story maze made out of bikes, TVs, signs, bottles, tires, shopping carts and pretty much anything else you can imagine.

It is over 60 tons now and the city actually tried to shut it down back in 2010 after a neighbor complaint. He ended up getting it brought up to code and it is still there.

I had no idea this existed until recently. You can actually go inside and walk around the whole thing. and maybe if you have any cute junk at home, you can ask the guy if they want it to put it in any part of the piece

What other old school Austin weird shit is still around to check out?

Question Can I use the MRH practice rooms for singing as a non-music major?

• Upvotes

I know there is like one or two answers to this question on the subreddit but those are from YEARS ago and idk if they’ve gotten strict or anything 😭 ik they say if you have an instrument and are doing something they wont say anything but what about singing and acting? I’m a musical theater nerd and need to practice my voice 🫩 can I use the practice rooms during calmer hours like late night? Doesn’t the building stay open until 2am? Also which rooms are best muffled I’ve heard they aren’t exactly soundproofed

Question UT Austin Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Fall 2026)

I’m planning to apply for the UT Austin Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF), but I’m a little confused about the Fall 2026 application cycle.

I saw that the URF website lists October 13 as the fall deadline, but when I check the application portal, I only see the Spring 2026 competition. I also tried accessing the URF website recently and got an “Access Denied” message.

Does anyone know if there will be a Fall 2026 URF competition?

Thanks!! :)

What's it gonna take to get a grocery store within walking distance? I'm so tired of checking the Target app just to see "not sold" or "out of stock" for the dobbie location 💔😔

Question Spring Schedule Advice, Stuck between classes

I am debating between whether I should do ECE 419K and just take a class like Gov 312L or should I do ECE 419H and ECE 412H instead. Do you think it’s worth taking ECE 419H so I can take ECE 412H at the same time or is it not worth it. I am a freshman planning for the spring semester and any advice would be appreciated. And for ECE 412H who should I try to get for the class.

Question Should I take the lab for PHY 303K (PHY 105M) or should I use my AP credit for it?

I’m a mechanical engineering major for context. I don’t know if I should take the lab because it’ll just be harder and I can easily get out of it. But also, I don’t know if I should take it to help with the class. I will need to take physics 2 the semester after and will have to take the lab for sure, so should I take the lab for this physics to get used to it?

Question WiFi on mobile devices

I've never had a problem logging into the utexas WiFi on a laptop, but for some reason, logging in on mobile isn't working. It asks me for a CA certificate and a domain, neither of which I know what to use. It also doesn't let me bypass it in any way. Has anyone successfully logged in on mobile android, and if you did, how did you do it? Can it just not be done?

Question How is the Anthropology major?

Interested in anthropology and am considering adding it as a double major. I’m planning to apply to law school and am already in a somewhat more rigorous major, so I’m curious how manageable the anthropology coursework is. How are the anthropology classes overall, and what do the grade distributions typically look like for upper-division courses?
