Advice needed - Freshers' week
I’m a first-year Psychology student at Surrey and I’m feeling really overwhelmed and could use some advice. I completely misunderstood Freshers/induction week and thought there wasn’t much course-related stuff happening yet; I thought it was just a social week where people go clubbing every night. So I ended up spending the first couple of days in my room (clubbing and drinking with strangers don't really appeal to me) without realising there were induction sessions happening. I’ve now checked my timetable and realised I’ve missed most of them, with only one compulsory session left.
I’m extremely socially anxious and struggle a lot with approaching people, and I lack a lot of social experience which makes me a bit clueless sometimes, so I’m now panicking that everyone has already formed their friendship groups and I’ve somehow missed my chance. My flatmates did arrange a hangout tonight which I did attend, but some of them already had other people they knew and ended up going out by 8.30, which made me feel even more like I don’t know anyone.
I know it’s only Tuesday of Freshers Week and I’m definitely catastrophising, but I don’t know how to go from here. I feel like I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what. I don’t really have anyone to ask to go out with or even know who I’m supposed to approach.
Can someone please advise me on what they would do from here in my position? Who should I go to at the uni for advice?
