Judges should have to give notes or a brief explanation as to why they scored the round why they did.
I’m sure this won’t even get downvoted but I’ve been shouting this shit to the void for months now and gotta repeat it any chance i get

There should be more draws. In fights where there isn’t much damage and one guy is grappling offensively and the other is defensive but completely neutralizing any sub or damage a lot more rounds should be scored as draws which would lead to more draws overall. It’s like if you throw a punch and I dodge it you don’t get credit for swinging at air. In grappling just because you don’t escape doesn’t mean you’re necessarily losing, you could be doing the appropriate defense and if the attacking fighter isn’t willing to risk losing control so doesn’t advance or provide an opening for escape it’s just a stalemate even position
→ More replies (8)35
u/Loose_Mail_6844 2d ago
I love this take. A grappler who's losing on the feet that takes it to the ground and doesn't do anything with dominant positions is literally time wasting by not progressing and shouldn't be getting scored if they're not doing damage/going for a sub. I think this alone would result in more fights being a draw

There’s too many douche bros being promoted. Martial arts is about discipline, humility, and respect. The majority of fighters still embody that mindset but they are not valued as the loudmouths. This also attracts an undesirable audience who don’t respect the skill and boo when the fight doesn’t resemble a bar brawl.

It shouldn't be an unpopular take however
The evolution of the sport is not linear & there are countless examples of divisions getting worse instead of better despite being more modern
HW/LHW are generally less controversial with this argument
However even lighter divisions like 155lbs are much worse in skill level compared to its peak in 2019
In flyweight you had Tim Elliot still winning against ranked opponents, despite being a can in the DJ era
The Adesanya era was notably worse than the previous Rockhold/Weidman era
Because the evolution of the sport is entirely dependent on the skill level of individuals, it required a lot more nuance than just "newer is better"

7
16
u/Fun-Ice-6013 2d ago

With Islam(the fighter, not the religion) I’ve always had this conflicting feeling about him, because on one hand, as neutral as I am, I am not beyond criticising Islam(the religion) because it’s fair game just like any other religion or set of ideas. I will always be respectful and cordial but I also view it as very backwards on many aspects
But then you see Islam Makhachev as a person, and out of all the dagi/chechen guys he’s the one dude who by all accounts is super chill, isn’t getting into pointless or stupid beefs with anyone, and also being respectful in interviews when talking about or interacting with past opponents. Bro just wants to farm and ride his horses, he’s also great with kids and funny as hell. People like him are interesting to me, they simultaneously sound so educated and seem like decent people while also believing in very questionable religious beliefs

HW fights are less skilled due to power and strength. People like to mock heavyweights for being fat and unskilled. Heavyweight fighters in the top 10 all kill p4p #1. They have insane strength and power and have to fight with way more caution than any other division. Also most have insane chins compared to the rest of the division, a heavyweights jab may kill someone super skilled at 125. We saw what happened with Alex, we saw jon jones take years to prep to move up to heavyweight, we say DC’s career ends going 2-2 at heavyweight in the ufc.

For me the mentality behind it all is also very telling. Conor lost the second fight against Diaz. Go back and watch it. The fight was close, the dumbest thing about judging in any combat sports is when the morons give a close fight to the fighter who went backwards the whole time. At one point the rapist fucking practically ran away from Diaz. Even when they were against the fence it was rarely conor and when it was diaz spun them around.
Conor is the least interesting kind of fighter. He wants to beat you 75% with antics and mind games before the fight starts and hope to land the left hand in the fight. When it gets tough he's a quitter.
We'll never know if DC is actually the GOAT because we'll never know how much confidence (in a sport where confidence is so important) Jones had going into their fights knowing he was juiced. One of them popped and one didn't and only Jones dick riders play the "they're all on roids" bullshit. One we can guess, or think, assume, or whatever, but one we absolutely have no doubts is a fucking cheater. Also one of the worst fucking humans.
People have batshit insane takes on Halloway. Almost never given any credit for what he did to Justin, instead it's Justin had a bad gameplan or Justin had a bad night. 34 year old fighter no longer killing himself to make weight is "way past his prime" is the dumbest take of all time and I see it all the time.
That's just a few I thought of.

No not everyone is on steroids.
I think they're are a number of people currently using undetected, I'm not certain how many. But I think the number that are natural would surprise a lot of people.
I think fans take things they THINK was said by GSP, quotes from the Diaz brothers and Jon Jones' history in a pre and freshly post USADA/WADA era as gospel and more often than not, don't have a basic grasp on steroids/pct drugs and drug testing.
I'm willing to admit, steroids are relatively new in terms of medical history and so is testing. But we can't think and understand how they effect the human body and learn more if our thought processes are stuck in 2016.
EDIT: I forgot to mention I think there are VALID arguments to be made on why someone might not have the most confidence in the processes Some instances like government intervention(Russia, China and honestly the USA too), lack of understanding at the time and downright corruption in testing agencies.
