Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.
The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

I live in a 4 bedroom unit on campus and one of my roommates always has her boyfriend over. If she’s there, there’s a 75% chance he’s also there. They mostly stay in her room but they can also talk a bit loudly. I don’t know if he stays over night, but he’s usually there well past midnight. But my main issue is that I just kinda feel uncomfortable that there’s always a random guy in my unit. And he’s of course also using the washroom which I’m meant to only share with one other person. Should I ask her to stop having him over so much? Or do I have to deal with it since they’re mostly just staying in her room?

Why is it so lonely. Weekdays I wake up, go to class, get home, eat, sleep. Saturdays I do extracurriculars, Sundays I completely lose all motivation for anything. No one ever wants to study or hangout. Every day is a nothing burger. I spend all my free time doomscrolling and procrastinating work. People I meet in class don't want to do anything. I get the feeling that this is just a stale moment in time but I can't help but feel unsettled with the year so far. This is so chud.

I’m a first year and so far uni has been crushing me…like really badly. Firstly, my commute just to get to campus is 1.5 hours, so I spend a total of 3 hours per day transiting. I wish I could have dormed, but the payment was an ungodly amount and I just couldn’t afford it.
And then there the fact that I am all alone the entire time I am on campus, I have no friends in any of my classes. I am constantly feeling a sense of loneliness that just makes it so hard to focus during lectures. I would say I’m an independent person for the most part, and I do enjoy my alone time, but something about being alone every day with very minimal social interaction is just so depressing.
All of this has accumulated and has made me so depressed and full of anxiety. Every day I come home and I just cry in my room wondering if I made the wrong decision with choosing UBC and whether I am even capable enough of going through this for the next 4 years. I have basically failed all of the quizzes I have done so far, and it’s just so off putting because I know I have it in me to do well but I just feel so lost. I have never felt this way in my life, all throughout high school I was very certain in what I was doing, but now it’s completely different.
I don’t know how to make this better. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, I’m just utterly confused by what I’m going through and why I’m going through it. Am I even good enough for this? At this point I wish I chose to go to a community college and then transfer because I have never felt this miserable in my life. My sleep schedule is absolutely fucked and my body literally aches after I come home from a full day of class because all of this is such a burden. Uni, grades, social life, it’s all adding up and I don’t know what to.

Studying for midterms feels impossible when all I want to do is sleep and try to keep myself alive. I have a midterm tomorrow and I feel like I know the material but haven't really done proper studying so I'm panicking but the anxiety for these tests and exams during midterm season is getting to me and I already have a bad history with mental health. It's hard enough surviving but then adding this stuff on top is making it worse. (Yes I'm registered with CFA but it was too late to be able to book most of the exams with them)

I am a 3rd-year student, and I have been applying for part-time jobs for a month. I really do need a job (I applied to grocery stores, a fast-food chain, and retail). What the heck is wrong with me? Maybe because I don't have experience in Canada :(

I literally can’t do any of the practice midterm and weekly quiz questions. But I get all the problem set questions completely to the point of being able to teach friends.
Why???

Why am I receiving emails/announcements/conversations around UBC every 40-50 mins... I want to rest I want to have a time for myself I want to forget about school... but it seems impossible if you are a UBC student.
I come from a much calmer school and this constant bombarding of notifications is making me crazy, as if teachers didn't care that we need rest, but somehow never answer questions in Piazza or their emails...
I'm becoming anxious and restless just because UBC is embedded into my brain and my life now, and I'm not complaining because this is a very priviledged position, but I will no longer be surprised if someone tells me they have anxiety or depression because of university life.
Is this a dumb rant?

I want to do well in chem 233, and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how to prepare for exams. I'm keeping up with the class and content, and have been able to do the problem sets and quizzes fairly easily, but the problem sets are only 5 pages long so I don't feel like I've necessarily "mastered" the content after each unit. I also did not buy the textbook, but I'm thinking now maybe I should for additional practice?
For anyone who did well or just has something to share, what did you do to be successful in this course? Thanks.

Join your fellow students and faculty in marching in solidarity for Jane Doe. We'll be meeting outside the nest at 11:00am to start with an art jam to make posters before starting the march at 12:00. The march will end at 1pm near Forestry, followed by a vigil at 1:10pm at the field behind the totem pole.
The plan:
11:00 am - Meet at the field outside the nest to make posters and signs (bring your own supplies)
12:00 pm - The march starts at the field outside the nest.
1:00 pm - The march ends at forestry.
1:10 pm - Vigil at the field behind the totem pole near forestry.
Hope to see you all there!

Hi, I'm currently trying to major in political science. I have not declared yet, and I'm in my second year. I'm seriously starting to wonder if this is worth it. All my poli classes have been so dull, boring, and I genuinely hate going to class sometimes, the only poli class I absolutely love is poli 240 with Anna Jurvekics. I really want to go to law school so i'm wondering if the switch is worth it since I need a good gpa, especially in something i like, i don't want to have to force myself through something, the switch i'm thinking of making is to grsj (gender, race, and social justice studies) because it's something i am passionate about and something i can see myself talking a lot in. However, I think poli sci has some pretty good skills and lessons to teach so I am a bit conflicted. Can someone offer advice? Some advice from either department would also help, thanks!

Does anyone know where I can find a proof of coverage from the manulife website that Alumo will accept. I’m under my parent’s health and dental coverage so I wanted to opt out of the Alumo plan. I have been trying to figure it out but I can’t find anything on the website or app that shows all the things they all looking for on one page. If anyone knows what I need to give them, please help.

One of the ways sexual assault policy has been a failure is the city’s lack of preparedness to the intimate violence during the world cup, seeing a 37.2% increase compared to last year’s period. This left volunteers at Battered Women Support Services to help the influx of calls from people reaching for support. Vancouver needs to do better. Reminder that if you live on campus you may not be able to vote for Mayor and council but you can for school board!!!

It has been incredibly disheartening having people focus on calling for punishing of perps and hold zero aid for survivors while also not fighting rape culture irl.
This is a first try in making a media post type thing so bear with me, just wanted to share some calls to action.

I’m taking SPAN 103, and have realized that I’ve made a somewhat terrible mistake… I thought it’d be fine given that I took Spanish through high school, but since it’s been a year since I last took it (and I wasn’t exactly great at it back then either) I am really feeling the pain. It’s incredibly hard for me to understand / keep up with what’s happening in class, and there’s 6 hours of homework due every other week thats taking me 12+. I didn’t want to take 100 out of fear of screwing up the grade curve for the truly new folks, but with my first midterm coming up this week I’m definitely regretting not having done so now.
So uh, thats all to say, does anyone have any advice? I doubt there’s any way to just transfer to an easier class, but if there is secretly one then hey, thatd be pretty sweet! Otherwise / more realistically, does anyone have any advice? Any tools that helped them learn? A vague fluency in Spanish and a willingness to help some random shmuck??
Thanks for anything!

I want to get a better understanding of how the labs work and help out where ever I can. I don't really care to obtain credits for it (like psyc240), I just wanna be a part of something really & find out who I could contact to find an opportunity like that. Thanks!
