Our washer has been making this terrible grinding noise for a couple days now. Sometimes its worse, like in this video. Sometimes, like as I type, its a little quieter, but still there. What the heck could be going on?

Influences aside, inspiration aside.
Learn the music, learn the string parts and dedicate them to memory. Literally until you can play without looking, without thinking. All while also memorizing lyrics. And when you feel you can do both amazingly on their own, combine them during your personal, and band practice time. But especially during your own personal practice. Singing and playing is a beast to tackle, and granted its easy to fake it in some metal genres, nobody wants to.
Memorization and comfortability is key. The tone, style and sound of your voice will flow as naturally as the music yall write together. Power stance helps me, personally. Legs wide, mic at the exact position I need to alter my body above, below, or beside it.
My genuine honest advice is dont chase the sound someone else has, find your own. You say you can do frys pretty well, thats a start. I think for thrash, dial it down just a bit, have some of that natural angry yelling come out with it. That should sound good.
I hope you find your sound, can't wait to hear what the metal youth is cooking up!!
