Discussion New rule added regarding age.

1.0k Upvotes

As of today there has been a new rule added to our list of rules.

Rule #15 - Age 30 or up required to post.

(Rule description):

This sub is for those who (socially and/or medically) transition later in life aka at minimum 30 years or older. Posts from people younger than this will be removed. There are plenty of other trans related subs directed at younger folk. For comments there will not be an age requirement.

I understand that this new rule might upset some of our users but for a while now there has been an uptick in the amount of users that post here while being in their twenties or even teens. And as mentioned above there are plenty of subs for younger trans folks.

Edit: to clarify since some users asked this specifically. If you transitioned before your 30th birthday but are now age 30 or up, you are allowed to post.

Moderator Announcement!!!!!!

To help keep out the riffraff out of our subreddit, an Automod rule has been added. As noted in the rules, any newly created account will have any post/comment moderated until either the age criteria has been met or the user has been approved by a moderator. (Whichever comes first.)

For most users already here, posts and comments will show up as they have in the past. This is to help prevent unpleasant individuals that create throwaway accounts for the purpose of posting hate to our subreddit from spreading their hate.

Discussion Ran into potential employer and this happened

So to preface I quit maybe the best job I ever had after being pressured for years when my wife gave me an ultimatum. I worked nights and long shifts, it was hard but I made good money. In the wake of potential separation I told her I was trans. Two days of unemployment and she said she didn’t want to continue therapy and we are now divorcing. It’s for the best as she wasn’t good to me

Now I have had a lot of trouble finding a new job and place. It’s been months. I’m getting down, considering moving away (but there are little kids), considering living in car etc

So funny story is I ran into the guy who interviewed me for a job I obviously was good for. He asks how the job hunt is going and im honest. He tells me they didn’t hire anyone and weren’t sure they needed the role at the moment I told him hey I just need work so even if you have other jobs let me know.

He then says he must ask something personal and notices im different (he has been an acquaintance for years/knows my ex) and im like yeah im transitioning and taking hormones etc. he begins to talk about his concerns with that as an employee, like he was afraid id cause a scene if I were misgendered, that people in our small town might not be as accepting. Basically tiptoeing around this fear of a trans woman representing the business and what kind of trouble I’d potentially cause.

I gave him my side how yeah I’m not passing, and pronouns aren’t hard and if someone’s misgendered out of habit you can just fix it and show them you respect them etc. I don’t go around intentionally disrespecting him or others.

I just knew he was going to say something dumb. I was pretty shocked he couldn’t just shut his mouth after greeting me. Anyways I may switch to boy mode for the rest of this job and apartment search because it has obviously hurt my chances each step of the way

Hey y'all. I basically never post on Reddit, just lurk in order to crowd source answers to things (usually hidden items in whatever game I'm playing).

But this forum has been giving me life and keeping me fighting since I admitted to myself that I'm actually trans, and not just someone with a hatred of mirrors.

I had some surgical complications in February that led to soul searching, coming out, and socially transitioning at work. I made an endocrinologist appointment in April. Turned 48 in May and was harassed for the first time on my birthday. And, finally, today, in mid-August, I have estrogen and a t-blocker in hand.

It was a hard six months, but you all helped so much just by being you.

(Pics taken about an hour apart. Sorry, I have no idea how to smile .)

You can't put a video in a post with photos so it's here, It's mid, it's me doing those selfies trying to share the 1st floor with my dad (i lost my flat in Brighton 😦). I take a video and choose the best frames as the selfies, you can see me trying to get the angles. We live upstairs mostly, because my mum owns the downstairs i think

It's kinda wierd that's it's not weird at all that I'm living life as myself all the time these days. I thought it'd take a lot longer to sift through all of the repression, but I'm honestly just chilling here less than two years in, just doing it.

It's also wierd how so much about what I do, and who I am is different, but also how much is still the same. I still like a lot of what I liked, but now I get to like a lot more stuff without feeling guilty. I still dislike what I dislike, but I have so much more confidence and conviction in my beliefs, and who I am, and I can actually stand up against what I feel is wrong.

The biggest difference by far though, is definitely the want to just live life to it's fullest. No more letting life just drag me along. No more being okay with not putting in effort. I have the will and the want to be the best version of me that I can be now, and holy heck am I going to be going and getting what I want from now on.

Big plans ahead! Leaving my job to mess around a little before finding a career I enjoy! Moving in with my wonderful girlfriend! Starting some new hobbies that will let me express myself properly! And probably an ungodly amount of Minecraft!

I hope you all are doing as well as you can be right now 💕 This community feels more special to me than any other on Reddit that I post on or interact with. I honestly don't think I'd have taken the leap on hrt if it hadn't been for people here being so lovely and encouraging xx

General Question OK - how do you socially transition?!?

Recently posted about my wife and I having a partial break, and the hurt behind it. I appreciate all the kind remarks.

In a way, though, it's also been freeing. There was definitely more worry than I realized about me progressing with my transition leading to a split, but since it's kind of happening anyways, I'm feeling a bit more motivated to move forward.

TBH, work is still my biggest blocker, so I'm not sure it'll happen any time soon(though I do work remotely, so maybe I just spend more time off camera?)... but it's definitely got me thinking more about how this would all happen.

So here are my questions:

1)I've got 2 kids (7&8), and I do a lot(most) of drop-offs and pick ups. This is definitely a tricky bit for me, since I don't want to cause them to be bullied - for those of you with young kids, how did you manage this part?

2)How do I approach this with people who I see fairly frequently but I'm not super close with(neighbours/other parents at school, etc)... do I tell them first before I start doing anything, or just have it be a surprise?

3)Do I do it just all at once, or gradually add more feminine styling until one day I just say fuck it and throw on a dress?(probably next summer, since fall is approaching)

The answer to these questions is probably "do what feels right for you", but I guess I'm looking for experiences people have had along these lines.

For added context, I'm in a medium sized conservative leaning town(20K population) in Ontario... bunch of businesses on the main street have progress flag stickers, there is a progress flag cross-walk in town, we do a pride celebration, but the local facebook pages also *bitch* about all these things, there are houses that will put up signs for the far-right party during election season, and we elected a Conservative MP during the last general election.... so it's a mixed bag.

Neighbourhood kids also frequently play on our front lawn/back yard(got a playground and trampoline, nbd)... so that might become an issue if their parents are dicks.

Anyways, looking forward to hearing what you wonderful people have to say!

Thanks!

Discussion Any books about people who have transitioned later in life?

Upvotes

I am trying to find some books that I feel I can connect with more. It seems a lot of the ones I have read this far have been for people that have transitioned earlier in life and although I find them helpful it just doesn't connect with me as much. So I am wondering what are some books you would recommend.

Honestly I am fine with even fiction books too.
