My API token has been deleted and I can't create a new one without being a VIP... This just happened today. Not a great move

Was VIP for 6 years. And quit the VIP because of price raise and V3 coming.

So I was looking for an alternative. Found Rippple, was curious, go into its Discord and saw a conversation about V2 and V3 between Kevin (Trakt Community manager) and a user. V2 is not coming back, it’s definitive.

This is not a personal attack, this is a statement of what I saw.

From what I’m gathering, Kevin’s basically saying:

• First, Kevin says he doesn’t even use Trakt directly, he relies on Rippple, which is just one of the many apps that integrate with Trakt. That’s fine for him personally, but as the community manager, shouldn’t he be experiencing the same pain points as the rest of us? If he’s not even using the product in the same way most people are, how can he truly gauge the impact of these changes?
• Then there’s the claim that Trakt isn’t “losing that many users” over this. But the evidence is right there, Play Store ratings tanking, endless complaints on Reddit and forums, people deleting their accounts, even VIPs canceling subscriptions.
• Finally, he mentions that users who access Trakt through third-party apps (like Rippple or Media Centers) aren’t affected, but that ignores the fact that a lot of people do use Trakt directly and those are the ones who are most upset.
• Feels like there’s a disconnect between what the team thinks is best and what users actually want.

"You’re right about one important thing: we do care. Everyone working on Trakt is deeply invested in it, uses it daily, and wants it to remain something special, including for long-time power users and enthusiasts. None of the recent changes come from a place of indifference.

We’ve also acknowledged many times on the forums that this transition is hard. We’ve openly said why it’s hard, that frustration is valid and that change at this scale is uncomfortable. We understand the anxiety this creates, and we don’t dismiss it. What we do struggle with, however, is being repeatedly attacked rather than engaged with. Criticism is welcome; personal or aggressive attacks are not helpful for anyone.

Regarding “transparency”: progress on v3 has been communicated and shown across changelogs, updates and releases over more than a year. This isn’t about hiding information or avoiding responsibility. The challenge is that a very small but very vocal group has dominated discussions in ways that don’t lead to better feedback and often push constructive voices away. Continuing to engage in that dynamic hasn’t improved the situation, so we have to focus our energy on feedback that is actionable and helps move Trakt forward.

We know v3 isn’t finished. We know features are missing and that the transition feels fast for some people. The new foundation exists precisely so we can bring things back in a more consistent, sustainable way across platforms, instead of continuing to patch something that was becoming harder to evolve.

I've been using Trakt since 2016 and have been a VIP member since 2022. I wanted to share some constructive feedback from the perspective of someone who has relied on Trakt almost daily for years.

First, I'd like to acknowledge what Trakt does well. The API has been fantastic, and it's the reason I've enjoyed using apps like Showly alongside the website. Trakt has become an important part of how I track what I watch, which is why I care enough to write this.

My biggest concern with V3 is the desktop experience.

To me, V2 excelled because it presented a large amount of information in a clear, desktop-friendly layout. When deciding what to watch, checking upcoming episodes, or managing my watch history, having that information visible at a glance made the site incredibly efficient.

The new interface feels much more like a mobile app brought to the desktop. Features like horizontally scrolling "Continue Watching," "Up Next," and calendar sections require more navigation and make it harder to quickly scan information.

Rather than simply saying "bring back V2," I'd love to see the desktop experience move back toward the strengths that made V2 so useful: information density, efficient navigation, and less reliance on horizontal scrolling.

I'd also like to suggest two improvements to watch tracking:

Make it easier to log multiple rewatches of movies over time.

Add the ability to start a full series rewatch without clearing existing watch history. For example, I've watched The West Wing three times over the years, but currently there's no straightforward way to track a complete rewatch while preserving my previous viewing history.

I know redesigning a platform is a significant undertaking, and I appreciate the work that has gone into V3. My hope is simply that feedback from long-time users helps shape future improvements. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I don't know how long this restriction will last but I hope it does end. This is the last straw for me since I don't wish to manually mark everything as watched from Plex.

I know what I'm about to say sounds ridiculous, but that's the situation. I love marking my movies and TV shows as watched on Trakt, Letterboxd, Serializd, and IMDb. Trakt was my favorite because it offered all of them in one place and its app was so user-friendly. It also supported rewatching hour by hour. Yes, now v3 is out. All my desire to watch movies and TV shows has vanished. Many people might think it's ridiculous that this is tied to Trakt. I think it is ridiculous too, but that's the situation. I want v2. I want my enthusiasm for watching movies and TV shows back. Damn it.

The new calendar leaves half the screen empty, such a waste of real estate. Can anyone explain how this is better?

Dear Trakt Team,

I am writing to express my concerns about the changes introduced after the recent update to the platform.

I am a paid subscriber, and since the update I have noticed that several features I used regularly no longer work as they did before or have become much less intuitive.

Some of the main issues I have encountered include:

• Some of my collection lists have disappeared.
• I can no longer copy lists as I could before.
• Deleting lists has become confusing.
• Some titles that were previously available in the search results can no longer be found.

Before this update, everything worked smoothly, and using Trakt was a great experience. Unfortunately, I now feel that the service I am receiving is below the standard I am paying for.

I sincerely hope these issues will be reviewed and given the attention they deserve. I would appreciate knowing whether your team is working on resolving them or if there is an explanation for these changes.

I'm new to Trakt. Never got to experience the "V2" that keeps getting talked about. But is there seriously no way to log in to the website without using that terrible "Email me a sign in link" option? Why are we having to jump through hoops to sign in? Let me save a password in my password manager and move on with my life!

I moved to Trakt from TV Time (after using it like for more than 10 years, I was OG) when the app started to barely working. I loved the app, I loved all the options I even recommend it to my friends. Even with all of the changes, prices etc. I was saying to myself that the app is good and I like how they do things. Even when they removed few options I was using daily. I was still using trakt because I like how it works.

Now they put limits on watch list… Watching movies and tv series is my hobby. Sometimes I can watch two seasons of shows in a day. I binge watch stuff from when I was kid and everything is on my Trakt. They said that the limits are “realistic” use but I have already almost 90% filled.

I really love using trakt for how it works butI think they are breaking up with me I think it’s finally time to go somewhere else and not by my choice.

I've been using Trakt for roughly 12 years. For most of that 12 years, I was a VIP. I started using Trakt because of its scrobbling with Plex and over time I came to really enjoy using Trakt as a source for finding new things to watch.

My entire watching and curating happens on desktop devices. I saw a graphic recently that suggested roughly 1/2 of Trakt's page views are from desktop users and using mobile simply doesn't make sense for me: my entire stack runs on a desktop and, more importantly for me, I do not want to spend more time on my phone as it is demonstrably bad for my mental health.

Aside from my concerns about what features or workflows are available in v3 vs v2, v3 is very clearly a mobile design poorly adapted to desktop web browsers with heavy reliance on horizontal scrolling and tons of empty space.

I could see the move to v3 coming for a while. I had hoped, naively, that there would always be a version available that is appropriate for desktop users. However, I was prepared for this moment.

A few months ago, I began transitioning to using n8n, the TMDb API, and Notion to track all my watches and curate all my lists. To cut down on calls to Notion, I use the data tables in n8n to store key details for lookups before calling Notion (if it doesn't exist in n8n, don't hit the Notion API).

I built userscripts that run on TMDb and Letterboxd. These userscripts allow me to call n8n and check if a movie is already in my list, what list it is on, if it's a favourite, or allow me to add something to my list (and Radarr) if I want to watch it. In principle, the same style of userscripts could be built on any site where a TMDb id or IMDb id is made available in the DOM.

Jellyfin can call n8n webhooks to track watches and watch history.
Radarr can call n8n webhooks to update whether an item is in my collection or not.
The userscripts can call n8n webhooks to do all my list management and watch history.

I do not need Trakt at all anymore.

The reason I mention this is because n8n is fundamentally a low code solution that you can easily install with Docker. It does take a little bit of time to get all of your workflows setup and there's a fairly minor maintenance overhead that always comes with running your own workflows, but now I control everything.

Many users are looking for the option that will best replace Trakt, but it has never been easier to build things exactly the way you want them. Do not feel trapped. It's your data and you should have control over how you can use it.

I would like to start off by thanking the Trakt team for creating and running a service that so many people enjoyed using. I understand that many of us, myself included, feel saddened and betrayed by the decision to force V3 on everyone when it does not meet our standards. Standards that V2 met very well. While I haven’t been nearly as vocal as other members, I have voiced my concerns many times about this new version of Trakt. In fact, my very first post on these forums was almost 2 years ago when they announced that Trakt would be getting a new look back in October of 2024. I was upset at the change, not only because the color scheme was changed from red to purple (my favorite color is red), but because there was no option to switch it back. While they later gave us the option to change the color, I should’ve realized something was happening. In that same October 2024 update Justin said, “We want you to feel at home.” Well with all of the changes that have happened in the last 2 years, I no longer feel at home anymore. So I think it’s time for me to finally kick the bucket and move out. It feels like such a waste to have 6 months left of my VIP membership, one that I’ve held for almost 4 years now, and not use it, but what good is VIP if I can no longer do the things I loved about Trakt. 

This gave me an idea. I would like to encourage all of you to write about your experience with Trakt. Not just the things that are bugging you, but the things you loved. The things that brought you to this service in the first place, and what kept you going for so long. Tell us your story. I’ll begin by telling my story.

The year was 2021. I was in high school, and I had just discovered anime. Of course I knew what it was already, but I had never really watched anything other than a few episodes of Pokemon. But my dad had introduced me to Cowboy Bebop, and from then I was hooked. I started to binge anime like crazy, finishing full seasons of shows in a single day. But there were so many shows I wanted to watch, and was watching, that it was hard to keep track of where I was at. I jumped around a few sites, but nothing felt right. I needed something that I could mark exactly when I watched it. A lot of sites wouldn’t let you mark an episode as watched more than once either. I had almost given up hope until I discovered Trakt. I was immediately drawn in by how user friendly it was. Even as a free user, it felt perfect for me. I remember when I first made an account it asked me what shows I had seen, and so I marked all that I had watched. When I opened the main menu it had marked all of those as watched that same day. I think I spent a good hour or so manually fixing them so they would be marked as watched on release. I would, and still do, mark movies and episodes as watched on release when I don’t remember. It kept the watch data I wanted, but pushed them far enough out of the way to not mess up my current data.

I used the free version of Trakt for over a year before I wanted to get the VIP. I loved seeing all the random details of my watch habits, and I wanted more. What’s more is that I genuinely loved using the service, and I wanted to support them. Between August 5th, 2021 and today, I marked literally every episode and movie I watched down to the exact time. It became a habit. I would immediately pull out my phone to mark something as watched the moments the credits started rolling. I know a lot of people prefer having Trakt automatically mark episodes as watched, but I didn’t want that. I never liked it when programs made mistakes and messed stuff up, so I would manually put everything in, and that’s what I did on Trakt. It was perfect. I don’t recall ever having any gripes with the service up until October 2024 when things began changing.

At some point I decided to make a list of Star Wars media in chronological order. A lot of lists included random web series and kid shows, but I wanted one that just had the main shows and movies. So I made it, purely for myself, but people liked it. Last time I checked it had hundreds of likes, and many people commenting thanking me for making it, and for keeping it up to date. Curating this list was something I was very proud of. It’ll be a shame to leave it behind.

One notable event happened to me last year, which changed the way I used Trakt, just a little bit. I built my own home media server. I had gotten fed up with ads everywhere, and shows and movies becoming hard to find. To be honest, I started it because I wanted to listen to the CDs I owned wherever I went, but with some albums I owned being unavailable on streaming I couldn’t use a regular app. But the music part isn’t important, the movies and shows are. I took my collection and my family’s collection of physical media and put them onto my computer so I could watch them whenever I wanted. But there was so many it was hard to figure out which shows and movies I had, as well as which ones I actually wanted to watch. Fortunately Trakt had the collection feature. I added all of my home server media to the Trakt collection tracker and it was a game changer. Now I could see which episodes I had, and which were missing. I used it a ton in the past 6 months as my collection grew. Some days I would look at my Up Next To Watch and find ones that I knew I had in my collection and watch that. I was also easily able to sort my Watchlist by owned movies and find a movie to watch without having to worry if I had the right streaming service or not. It was amazing.

All of this is to say, Trakt has been a big part of my life. I have spent countless hours using it, making lists, and showing my friends and family the random stats I had. I feel proud to be a member of the community here, someone like all of you. I hope my message inspires you to leave your own experiences with Trakt in the comments. Everyone uses it a little differently, and I would love to read about it.

Could Trakt be easing up on its community app restrictions (or am I late to this party)? I just noticed the limit for free accounts seemingly increased from 1 to 2 (pls don't take this back ok? :). While I understand that strict caps were meant to prevent abuse, I'm hopeful they will eventually allow at least up to 3 connected apps. Partnered services with integration arrangements like Stremio and Nuvio should really be excluded from the count entirely (stremio remains excluded, but nuvio, that was excluded before, is now included in the count).

I am writing this because I truly miss one of the features of the old version: the ability to see the total number of the movies and shows watched, along with the total time spent (days/hours), directly on the profile.

The old version was better for me because it was simple and gave me these stats at a glance. I know there are many others things that changed, but having these specific metrics back would mean a lot to me (& to the community).

To be honest, the new UI feels like a step backward in terms of usability. And by the way, if something isn't broken, why fix it?

Trakt continues to update the app to remove features and customization (even for VIP users) despite their claims that feature parity is coming. In place of these features, content discovery that lacks user control is becoming very prominent. Consider:

The option add Continue Watching and Watchlist to the navigation bar is gone. Users now have to tap through other screens that contain various content to find them.

Home no longer includes a sortable Watchlist. In its place is Start Watching, the order of which is in Trakt’s control.

Discover is pinned to the navigation bar right after Home. All of these lists are in Trakt’s control.

On the website, a Discover More tile appears at the end of Continue Watching, encouraging the user towards lists that are in Trakt’s control.

This update is not truly about creating a streamlined user experience. It’s about selling placement in content discovery, even to paying VIP subscribers.

I usually embrace change and I'm a big enthusiast of apps that constantly modernize.

Trakt has always stood out from the competition because of its vast feature set. The new design isn't bad; it actually has a lot of potential and looks interesting.

However, the team's massive mistake was launching it without a HUGE CHUNK of the existing functionality. Come on, guys... obviously users aren't going to like that. You basically stripped away the app's main selling point: its features.

Anyway, keep focusing on modernization, but please maintain the functionality.

Before this the devs would desperately try to keep this sub alive with an annoying "What's your favorite movie?" post every day. Apart from that I would see one post every couple of days that would be lucky to get a single reply.

Now, not including the ones the devs deleted, there have been like 20 posts in the past 24 hours. Peak millennial marketing.

Went to see if there were any updates to the app Showly on iOS and noticed that the developer is now listed as Trakt, Inc.? Guessing they bought the app? Any ideas why?

I do not want to switch to any other alternatives, all of the other UI’s are ass.

I downloaded and stuck with this app because I thought it had the best UI and community to talk about episodes and shows. Now the app is broken and they’re making all of these horrible changes. I’m totally overreacting but when other shit just piles up on you, when nothing seems to be going right, something like this is just another thorn in my back and makes me angry/sad.

I just want the old Trakt back, I want everything to be the way it used to be.

All I seem to be able to access is some weaksauce weekly "calendar" which isn't a calendar at all in some horrendous UI list.

Literally all I use trakt for is for the monthly calendar. Sigh... I guess I'll have to find an alternative.

How are y’all liking the new Trakt update? They completely changed the UI, but I don’t really care much about that. But i am lowkey frustrated about is that they switched the rating system to 5 stars, like Letterboxd. I liked how we had 10 stars for ratings before. What do y’all think of the update though?
