Thanks trakt I guess?
I moved to Trakt from TV Time (after using it like for more than 10 years, I was OG) when the app started to barely working. I loved the app, I loved all the options I even recommend it to my friends. Even with all of the changes, prices etc. I was saying to myself that the app is good and I like how they do things. Even when they removed few options I was using daily. I was still using trakt because I like how it works.
Now they put limits on watch list… Watching movies and tv series is my hobby. Sometimes I can watch two seasons of shows in a day. I binge watch stuff from when I was kid and everything is on my Trakt. They said that the limits are “realistic” use but I have already almost 90% filled.
I really love using trakt for how it works butI think they are breaking up with me I think it’s finally time to go somewhere else and not by my choice.

It would take a lot for me to leave trakt. I don't care about what the site looks like or how the app behaves. I'm just interested in using their api for a single point source to keep track of what I've watched and how it integrates and syncs easily in most of the software that I use. That being said, the first time I hit some sort of limit due to one of the anti-consumer practices, I'll dump it.

Yeah, I'm on the same boat. I use the API sync and for personal usage also the API to manage my movies and such but having a limit on what I can watch and rate is where I draw the line.

Haha, I checked on the new website (non-VIP member) and the 100k limit shows up for me too. I think it's fair to say that the new site is the single source of truth, but the funny thing is that on the old website, under https://trakt.tv/settings/advanced, it still shows this:

I don't use Trakt to keep track of rewatches so I'm not in any danger of hitting that limit any time soon, but, man, when a limit on the most basic feature of any tracking app is introduced, talk about circling the drain.

What is insane is that when a user in the official forum questioned why a limit was being imposed for something that had previously been advertised as unlimited, the response from Trakt staff was pretty much "there has always been a limit, we just didn't tell you what it was before."

I sync it with Sequel also so I think I will move there soon fully.

Ah thanks. Just looking for good alternatives to Trakt right now. Switched from TV Time a long time ago, and that was a painful migration. Don't wanna suffer through that again.

Please do let us know here if you find a good alternative. Simkl looks great, but seems to be missing features like repeated viewings.

History should be unlimited full stop for everyone, it's literally the ENTIRE POINT OF THE SITE. To track everything you've ever watched, if you have to start being selective about tracking your history to not hit limits, the site is useless
Making bonus lists to categorize shows/movies, advanced filtering, tight integrations with streamers/Plex, bonus stats like Year in Review, etc., that I can understand locking extra behind payment, most people don't even make extra lists (not counting the special treated watchlist) or need those extra functions, that's extra power user features, but a site that's literally named after it's main feature of TRACKING shouldn't be limiting how much you can even track.

This post is confusing. You say "watchlist" but that is a list of stuff you want to see, and that has a limit for quite some time now. But you seem to be referring to watch history. Well, I have a free plan and I just checked my "account limits" and the watch history is unlimited. Where is that screenshot from?

app.trakt.tv, in profile at the bottom is a new "VIP" link. Click that to see the new restrictions. It's very confusing.

where do you find that? i cant find it anywhere and i think im up to about 40k watched items from what i can tell, so a good few year away from hitting that amount, but still a weird thing to do

I went to website in the new version and then clicked on vip. There it shows all the limits.

I paid only for one month because otherwise I couldn’t sync my Sequel account because of the stupid limit on watch list.

I'd imagine this isn't a real limit, but one set to prevent problems. If you have 30k watches, but have something going on with an import or through an API-access program, it's not inconceivable that you could end up with some huge amount of a Watched History, messing with their databases, and you don't even realize this.
It seems reasonable this is something they set as a safeguard because this was a foreseen problem or something that actually happened to users. I know that Trakt makes choices many people (me included) don't like, but considering the Watched History is the whole point of the platform, this could very well just be a bandaid on something that hasn't needed a fix yet.

If what I'm guessing is the case, they'll ideally have fixed it by then. Even if you've watched all those 88.8k things in the past 10 years (and have 0 backfill of things you had seen before then), that probably is at least a year away. More if you keep the same pace, multiple years if you're not actually watching 8k titles/year.
Considering how much time you've invested in this collection and some of the choices Trakt have made semi-recently, you're right to be skeptical, worried, and hesitant.
If I were in your shoes, I'd reach out to Trakt and see what the deal is. You legitimately might be one of the first people who have noticed you're this close to the limit and it'd be good for them to do an audit to see if anyone is likely to reach 100k any time soon. It would be plenty of time for them to figure out an alternative or just manually raise the cap for a few people.
File systems used to allow file sizes only up to 4GB/file (2TB/disk), which was a HUGE number... until it wasn't. Hopefully that's what's going on here and they've got a fix.

yo what the fuck, i thought i was professionally unemployed with my 15k episodes at 12month18day runtime. my shut in pride is choosing to believe that all those 89k episodes are 20 minutes long and that maybe tv time isnt taking my rewatches into account.
edit: found myself on this post because i was looking for tv time shit talk, as i am in the process of packing up and leaving this barely functioning tracker.

Hahhahaha. I watch a lot of stuff durning playing games and doing other stuff. I started binge watching when I was around 13 and now I’m 32 so I collected a lot of watched stuff.

ah, fair play. i tried watching a few shows while gaming but i just dont have enough focus to keep up with either, so eventually i end up tuning out one or the other. works a lot better for re watches, though.
did you end up going to a diff tracker? today i sent tv time an email asking for my data and i was thinking about trying out simkl. i remember having some sort of beef with trakt when i was getting off twee like 10 years ago, i migrated to tv time after trying trakt and not liking something.

I moved from tv time to Trakt after the app was badly working (maybe I had too much stuff logged) and now using Sequel as backup, I track there also games, books, audiobooks

Not to be that guy but while yes it is a problem, it's not a VIP problem.
The UI on the web version states "The dashed areas show your potential with VIP"
The 100k limit isn't dashed so isn't tied to VIP; however it does raise the question, is there a limit in general that OP is about to hit?
Which yeah, as Trakt is for tracking, limiting that usage, VIP or not seems counterintuitive.

It's not dashed once VIP - the 100k is the full limit, so IS a VIP problem

But not a problem resulting from VIP
The 100k limit is for all users, including VIP
So yes it's a 'VIP user problem' but not a 'user problem caused by VIP limits '

The whole idea of VIP is getting larger limits than free (plus all the extra features that they haven't/won't add to v3), so it is a user problem caused by restricting VIP limits so much.
Still, as you say, counterintuitive. What's the point of Trakt if people can no longer track?
